Why Hurley does not matter

Hurley, and for that case Kiker, Poveda, Volquez, and Diamand do not matter because there is an underlying problem here. There is no question that these pitchers have good to even excellent stuff. I want one of these pitchers to step up and rid us of it though.
It may not even be one of these, but someone needs to step up and do it. This "it" I am speaking of is something that can't be taught. I thought Millwood had it when watching his demeanor on the mound, but his "I will only give advice to these kids if they ask for it" contradicts my assumption. Padilla doesn't have it. The only pitcher that truly displayed it was Diamand after slipping of the mound and being laughed at.
I want one pitcher to show up with the confidence, swagger, and udder dominance in his head that he can pitch a shutout every game out. I want a bulldog that hits a Kinsler like player every time he steps out over the plate. I want a Clemens or Ryan like pitcher that leads with his actions and his words. I want him to confront people and call out players and coaches that do not want to win as bad as him.
I am not saying the current players on the roster do not want to win, I am saying they do not want to win bad enough. If they did, we would have wins rather than loses. Winners find a way.
Like I tell my employees at work, I don't want excuses, I want results. The reason why no one in Amarillo Texas is better than me at what I do is because I want it more. I will go longer, harder, and faster than anyone. And if someone is better than me, that is the person I want working for me so I can retire knowing my business is in good hands.
I want someone to show this on the field. The winning tradition will start there and then spread throughout the organization for years to come.

"Udder dominance"
Do you and your Amarillo employees work for Borden Milk?

I liked that one too
I immediately imagined like the 4H Club Nationals being broadcast on ESPN2.
You're just a very misguided individual, Dustin. -- Sharky

and
"Diamand" slipping "of" the mound.  Apparently he's not the best in Amarillo at spelling.

you can bet...
...that if there is a better speller in Amarillo, he will be working for this man, so he can retire knowing his business is in good hands.

hey!
"I will go longer, harder, and faster than anyone."

This is a family site!

seriously though, people said volquez had "it."  "It" is a function of being good, not the other way around.

Forget Johnny Bench, we got Gerry "the Jet" Laird

Word
I can't remember too many instances of Maddux or Glavine knocking the crap out of opposing batters.

There's more than one way to be a good pitcher.

You can't
will your way to making good pitches. Wish it were that easy.
buffering....

"it"
doesn't matter unless you can pitch.  Attitude alone doesn't win ballgames.  I think Hurley has both and that's why he'll be successful.

correct
but I would argue that in most cases talent doesn't amount to much unless you have some form of 'it' as well;  Hurley appears to have both

by mjh on May 28, 2007 9:53 AM CDT up reply actions

good point
it takes "it" to fully develop your talent.
