To those who want Jon Daniels fired

Just something to keep in mind, for those who want Jon Daniels fired -- particularly those who want him fired NOW...

If Hicks were to fire him, he'd no doubt want to go with someone experienced, someone who has built a playoff club, and someone he's comfortable with and knows...and given that Hicks is relatively cheap, someone already on the payroll would be ideal...

So, if Daniels were fired, the likely replacement would be:

John Hart.

That would suck.
I'm not a fan of mid-season management changes though.  Daniels' handling of Teixeira this summer will make or break him.

What I go back to
is that Hicks has clearly demonstrated to me that he does not know what a quality GM looks like out of all of those choices that he had and willing to spend basically whatever necessary, he chose Hart. Then he chose him again over Fuson.

I still don't know for sure what to think of Daniels, but my conservative side says that odds are Hicks would downgrade if he went out and chose a new guy. And it's going to suck if that guy is like Hart and doesn't appreciate quality players from the previous regime, like, say, Hafner, Pudge and Arod. I guess we don't have as many potential fiascos now (unfortunately), but the prospect is still frustrating.

Cashman
I'd only agree with getting rid of Daniels if Steinbrenner fires Cashman (because he isn't a miracle worker) and Hicks decides that Cashman is worth the money to rebuild with.

Barring Cashman (one of the best GMs in the game - how he combined strong player development with signing every free agent the Boss could see is unmatched), I stick with Daniels.  Unless Hicks goes begging on his knees for Fuson to come back...

Boy
I'm not sure that I'd agree that Cashman is one of the best around, after his performance the last couple of years. Pavano, Wright and Igawa are as bad of signings as we've seen in baseball in the last several years. Those guys would be like half our payroll. And Abreu isn't exactly proving to be worth all that money right now either. He had a nice draft in 2006, but again, that was almost totally because they paid out the nose for Chamberlain, Kenneday and Betances, among others.

by Brett Perryman on May 27, 2007 9:32 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Hard to say, though
how many of those decision were really his.  Was he under a fiat to sign a Japanese pitcher after Boston landed Matsuzaka?  I think he bears at least some of the blame but with Steinbrenner you can never be sure.

some good, some bad
moves, did a nice job with the Sheffield trade I guess, but the Igawa signing was very puzzling.  I think they may have counted on Clemens and other old pitching far too much, a roll of the dice.

Shefflied trade
While that may pay off eventually, the key prospect in it has since had TJ surgery. They gambled on his health and lost. That iffy health was probably the only reason they were even able to get a deal that looked as good as that one at face value. At this point you would have to think that he, Whelan and Claggett are all going to be relievers of some kind, which takes the edge off. On the other hand, Sheffield is not really tearing it up so far.

Well only Milly and Pads
are back from last year. Tejeda was in at the end of last year. Milly is hurt and Pads has always been like this he will pitch great then fall off the table. Loe was pitching great in ST and his first start of the season buthe is more of a middle reliever.

Please Milly and Pads
Were the only two full time starters from last year and Bmac was in the pen last year. Loe's numbers dropped last year after he was hurt outside of a few starts late in the season Tejeda walked tons of hitters when he did pitch and the 5 hole was a revolving door last year. Padillia had a career year last year and Millwood is Millwood let's see what he does when he is healthy. But hey Wash is the blame he stands out on the mound every time they throw and tickles them in the ass right before they throw the ball to Laird of which rode the pine last year.

The Next Ranger GM...
I would keep J D through the draft.

Then look to find a GM with an intense scouting background.

Someone LIKE Tim Wilken, who's now with the Cubs, I think. As a scout, he found Carlos Delgado, Roy Halladay, Vernon Wells. He had 11 straight first-round picks in the MLB at one point. I like that perspective more than Saber guys. On blogs, I prefer all-you-great Saber guys. Wilken is around 55. 30 years in the business. Never been a GM. Maybe we hire him as Assistant GM and he works WITH J D?

Someone like that.

Scouting
It's not only that, but maybe JD seems to change his mind too much? I won't list all this over again, but roster moves, and Eaton. Why does no one question the Eaton signing? We gave MY $85 million! He was under contract for 2 more years.

If you trade Chris Young and Adrian for Eaton and Aki - that's fine. But, why not sign Eaton to another deal? He had the surgery, he was cheaper than Padilla, his 2006 was just horrid, but, why not bring him back for a pretty cheap contract?

Cheaper than Padilla's deal anyway.

Some will say, "NO Moron! Eaton sucks."

Then why are you placing so much faith in Daniels going forward?

by 3Bagger on May 28, 2007 2:35 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Scouting
If you look at the Rangers' situation in Clinton (low A) (Poveda, Kiker, Whittleman, Herren, Lemon, Ballard, Gentry) and AA (Metcalf, Hurley, Mathis, Volquez, Benjamin)  it is apparent  scouting isn't necessarily the problem.  The issues in the GM office are the ability to assess trades at the major league level and roster management.

by doolindalton on May 28, 2007 8:28 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

The...
Chris Young, AGon, and Hafner situations would seem to be almost exclusively "scout" type failures.  Possibly Lemon and Meyer, as well.

If you're going to lay the blame at someone's feet, you'd lay the blame on whoever said Chris Young didn't have the stamina to be a starting pitcher, etc.  Whoever's saying that Botts sucks, etc.  Probably Connor and Chiti and Jaramillo.

by benmor78 on May 28, 2007 9:29 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Buck....
was the one who didn't believe that Young had the endurance to be a major league starter.

As for Botts, what would be his role on the major league team... DH against lefites? How many AB's would he get? I'd rather see him getting his AB's against righties and playing outfield in OKC instead of getting planting his butt on the pine in Texas.

by Redcaps on May 28, 2007 9:51 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

He's a switch hitter...
On our major league team?  Sure, his position is blocked.  Is that a fault of Botts or a fault of our scouts that said he's got a hole in his swing?

by benmor78 on May 28, 2007 9:57 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I know....
he's a switch hitter, but he tends to hit lefties far better than righties. His current and past splits indicate this. Besides, I seriously doubt that Botts could do more against lefties than has Sosa who's lighting them up.

by Redcaps on May 28, 2007 10:04 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

by Redcaps on May 29, 2007 8:49 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

botts
he has gotten numerous at bats in AAA he has nothing left to prove there, he is at the point where he would benefit more riding the pine with the rangers and being around the team and the coaches than playing daily against AAA pitchers that he is dominating.

As much as I support cruz, I say send him down to make room for botts, then again I worry about the roster moves that loom near with millwood and hairston coming back

by rentz on May 28, 2007 10:17 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Travis Hafner....
and Jason Botts aren't even close to being the same type of player. I don't get the comparisons other than they are both big guys who can't play defense. Their swing mechanics aren't even close. Travis Hafner, in spite of being big, has a short, compact swing and a very good eye at the plate (over a .400 OBP in the minors that's translated to the majors). Botts has a long, slow swing, and has a moderately good eye. Major league pitchers would take advantage of Botts' swing by busting him inside continuously.

by Redcaps on May 28, 2007 10:18 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

In that case...
Botts is wasting a space on the 40 man roster.  There's no point to his still being a member of this organization if 800+ OPS minor leaguers that can't play defense can't hit in the Majors.  Time to send him along.

However, in 90 major league plate appearances, he hasn't seemed overmatched.  What good is he doing us right now?

by benmor78 on May 28, 2007 10:22 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

He's getting to play...
outfield a bunch more than he would with the major league team. Or is that not valuable? Besides, there's a lot of difference between a minor league 800+ OPS and being able to hit in the majors.

by Redcaps on May 28, 2007 10:25 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

He's likely
never going to be a major league outfielder.  So what's the benefit of getting minor league AB's as an outfielder?

by benmor78 on May 28, 2007 10:29 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Calling
Botts a 800+ OPS minor league hitter is a bit misleading.  in 2005 he had a 897 OPS in Triple A.  In 2006 he hit 980 in Triple A.  He had a bad April this year but in May he's 990.  Pretty sure he'll end the year somewhere above 900, closer to 1000.

Botts is one of the best in the organization as working the pitcher. Wash is preaching plate patiece. I'm surprised he hasn't already adopted Botts, who pretty consistently sees more pitches per at bat than teammates.

Daniels
I've simply seen enough.

JD does a few things well, like find cheaper fringe options - Sosa, Chen, Wright, Tejeda, Rheino, Koronka, etc, otherwise? It's been a disaster.

I'm using Eaton because no one ever mentions him. If JD (and gang) believed in Eaton enough to trade two potential ALL STARS for him, then why not sign him to a 3 year, $28 million deal?

JD spent about $135 million this off-season. Over twice the Chan Ho amount. We got three players: MY, Padilla, and Cat.

identity
the rangers have never done much to form one in this metroplex. dfw is a huge fairweather fan area, you win and people will watch. the only exception is the cowboys and even they had problems drawing crowds in the mid-late 80s... so much of a problem that games were either blacked out or almost blacked out. I believe it was Kroger or tom thumb or some other grocery store who would buy up enough tickets sometimes just to get the game on tv.

Just for the record
This is the randomest act of paranoia I've seen this season.

If Hart is doing nothing but golfing and collecting a paycheck, who's to say he even wants to come back to the job?

That aside, who thinks he actually enjoyed the majority of his time as Rangers GM?  Is he powermad, and misses that desk and phone where he largely didn't make moves for years?

This theory makes no sense.  Appropriately, I see it inspired speculation of Buck's return.

of course, this is the reason it wont' happen at all.  if you are going to fire JD, you can't really replace him with anybody thats in the current admin and you can't replace him with the guy that messed up previously.  so, why bother firing a gm midway through the season?  you can't really win now anyway.

Forget Johnny Bench, we got Gerry "the Jet" Laird

I tend to agree.....
While I think JD is doing a fine job, Adam's theory here is way out in left field to me.

Ahhh.....the new age media.....it breeds passion in the fan and short horizons.

I like Jamey Newberg's idea
Please extend Jon Daniels Mr. Hicks. I really think JD is probably going to be one of the best things ever to happen to the Rangers.

Really?
Or are you being sarcastic?

I'm being dead serious.
I don't care if i get flamed for this, but i believe it to be true.  Every trade he has made (without buck hovering over him) has been considered very solid (borderline fleecing the other team) at the time it happened. I loved Danks, but face it, BMac was a top 5 prospect in all of baseball and is still very young. His draft of last year seems pretty solid so far. I'm all for extending him and having him here for a long time...We do need stability, and it sure as hell should start with JD.

JD
I agree that this time might be best served by extended JD. If he has the security of knowing he doesn't need to be looking over his shoulder all the time he might just make better long term moves. Right now a large majority of the trades he has made is with a win now or else mentality.

Jamey's got something
While I totally agree that to this point, JD's reign has been horrific.

However, he can change everything in the next two months.  They can completely restock the organization with all the picks they have in this draft.  And if they can get anything nice for Sosa, Lofton, Gagne and Tex?, then he can completely turn around the perception of him.

Remember he is young just like this team.  Hopefully, they can learn and improve together

Chris Young/Adrian Gonzalez for Aki Otsuka, the new Sammy Sosa/Wilson Alvarez for Harold Baines
