Rangers sign Mark Redman

Evan Grant reports that the Rangers have signed Mark Redman to a minor league deal.

He'll join the Oklahoma rotation, which is now missing the newly promoted Mike Wood, along with the disabled Josh Rupe. I have to wonder if this is an indication that Rupe isn't going to be returning anytime soon.

Also per Grant, Ben Harrison has been activated from the AA disabled list and is joining Frisco. Harrison is an interesting guy, a late-developing guy who hit pretty well in A ball and AA before separating a shoulder in winter ball.

What's the point of that, why not just promote Hurley at this point? I mean let's be honest, its not like we'll need a veteran arm for the stretch drive...

Mark Redman

If Mark Redman is starting games down the stretch for the Rangers instead of Hurley that is great with me. Hold off on starting the clock on how long the Rangers can keep him as long as possible. It's going to be a long time before the Rangers are even remotely a contender, hopefully he is around when they are poised to be one.

plenty of crappy options. It does almost feel like there is a designated "crappy" pitcher position permanently on the Rangers, with several candidates signed yearly to fill it.

great point

I'm already sick of the crappy trio of Wood/Koronka/Reiny. I watched this organization a couple of years ago run Volquez and Dominguez out there when they began the year in High A. Anything that talks them out of doing that I'm in favor of.

I'm actually okay with this...

If the guy is decent, then great! Its a nice bargain bin pickup. If the guy sucks like we all suspect, then well...he sucks. It'd be one thing if he was blocking a prospect, but he's not as the people we're looking at bringing up (Wood, Koronka, Rhein's, etc) definitely aren't awe-inspiring.
