5/3/07 game 1 game day thread

No lineup yet, for whatever reason...Update [2007-5-3 15:13:30 by Adam J. Morris]: -- Up now.

It will be Mike Wood v. Andy Pettitte this afternoon, and with Wood being the long man and pressed into duty, I wouldn't be surprised if Wes Littleton or A.J. Murray or someone like that is on standby to come back to Arlington this evening, in case the Rangers need to make a move between games to get another fresh arm in the pen for tonight.

And desperate times call for desperate measures...it is time for the Rally Sanjaya:

Go Rangers...

quick question
is Chen still in AAA.  If so is there a reason why Wood was chosen over him.

Oh, to be a machine.

by barasch10 on May 3, 2007 3:18 PM CDT reply actions

I do
you have a guy that's walked 3 people, including the guy in front of you and you swing at the first pitch?

by FirebatM3 on May 3, 2007 3:19 PM CDT up reply actions

Come on.
That's dumb.  (I mean, in general, maybe not... but it's not always a bad idea to swing at the first pitch.)

by a bebop a rebop on May 3, 2007 3:21 PM CDT up reply actions

It is
when the guy on the mound is struggling. Not asking him to get in a two strike count, but the guy's wasted 46 pitches in 1.1 innings. Swinging at the first one helps him out.

by FirebatM3 on May 3, 2007 3:23 PM CDT up reply actions

Eh
not a big fan of first pitch swinging regardless of circumstance. Especially not for a guy hovering around .200

by FirebatM3 on May 3, 2007 3:25 PM CDT up reply actions

Well
It was a good pitch to hit and Mike hit it well... just unfortunately AT an infielder
Oh, to be a machine.

by barasch10 on May 3, 2007 3:25 PM CDT up reply actions

I am tired
of constantly hearing - "Well, he hit it well." It doesn't matter how well he hit it, it was still a stupid thing to do in that situation.

by FirebatM3 on May 3, 2007 3:26 PM CDT up reply actions

Who's constantly saying it?
Regardless, this is the Ted Williams hitting ideal as I see it.  Swing if you can drive it, lay off if you can't.  I don't see how it matters much where you are if you can drive the ball.  It's the borderline pitches that are the ones you want to see go by.

by a bebop a rebop on May 3, 2007 3:29 PM CDT up reply actions

Everytime
MY struggles, the "well, he hit it well" comes out. That type of hitting is fine if you're at the bottom of a lineup, but when you create two outs in front of the middle of your lineup, you're not doing a good job.

by FirebatM3 on May 3, 2007 3:32 PM CDT up reply actions

why?
it's not unusual for a player to have a "skill set" that keeps their BABIP higher than league average... ie Ichiro

by Brandon Wilson on May 3, 2007 4:30 PM CDT up reply actions

Well
He's actually pretty consistently at that level, because of his line drive tendencies.  BABIP, 2003-2006: .346, .335, .356, .349.

The good news..
...is that Pettite is almost at 50 pitches, if we can get to the bullpen early in this game it might tax them for the next one.

sigh
cruz-laird-JHJ in the 9th

im so excited.

but WAIT! a heroic pinch hit attempt by wilkerson.  do i sense a titanic 500 ft homerun? i think so.

well, a single.  but now at least the amazing MY will get to bat in this game.

MY....
he of the Mendoza line.  Color me unexcited.  Maybe we can pinch hit Kata for him.  I hate being so down on this team.

Cruz struck out to end the 8th
It's Laird, JHJ, and Young for the 9th.

If you don't have fun it's your own damn fault.

COME ON!
We can get to this guy.  We can!  I believe.

(trying something different)

by bdavison94 on May 3, 2007 5:20 PM CDT reply actions

they should have pitch hit for Laird
if he gets on they're going to bring in a pitch runner anyways.  At least put someone in there who could beat out a ground ball

does it seem like MY is swinging at every first
pitch, maybe that's his plan to get back on track.

hello loss column.

7 games below .500 two games into May.

and Mike Young
drops to .200 on the year.  Nice.  He is flat out awful.  Bad at the plate, in the field and as a clubhouse "leader" obviously.

by Garcia on May 3, 2007 5:26 PM CDT reply actions

actually
he's under .200 now.  damn.

by Garcia on May 3, 2007 5:27 PM CDT up reply actions

its raining!
can we have our inevitable loss to go 8 under rained  out? please?

by DShep on May 3, 2007 5:26 PM CDT reply actions

Damn... Not good
MY has now dropped his avg to .198 and we lose again....

It's getting seriously ugly now.

I need to leave work and head on to the house for tonight's game.

However, I have an idea on how we can get back on track.

A bench clearing brawl next game. We bean GaYRod and a couple times. Benches clear and we kick some stinking Yankees ass. Get some frustration out... That'll get this team fired up for the month of May.

Go Rangers

Hopefully if we bean ARod
They retaliate and put MY, or Laird, or someone else who has been sucking the life out of this team, on the DL  before the brawl starts.

Just lookin' out for you, man.

Bring Back Buck
Maybe he knew something about this team's "leaders" and that is why he didn't let them lead.
