odd
Am I the only one finding it odd that Littleton was sent back down? Instead of say Feldman or Eyre?

Feldman
He was sent down a week ago.

I'm a little surprised they kept Eyre instead of him, though.

by Adam J. Morris on May 8, 2007 2:15 PM CDT up reply actions

oh, ok
Missed that about Feldman I guess. The Eyre thing is weird. Did we just burn through one of Littleton's options?

eyre
my only guess is so he can be the longman in the pen

He's going to ride those 3 nice innings
against Toronto for as long as he can. I'm honestly not suprised.

Option
Littleton's 2007 option had already been triggered when he was originally assigned to Oklahoma.  Doesn't matter how many times he goes up and down this season -- still counts as just one option.

right
Thanks. I'm not so smart when it comes to the roster management rules.

as Dan says, 3
and that is one more reason not to rush him up the big leagues this year.  Let him spend this year in AA and AAA and make the team out of spring training in '08.

September callups
In the case of Hurley, if he were to be called up in September when rosters expand, would that count as exercising an option since he would have to be added to the 40 man roster?

Not saying it would be a good or bad idea, just curious about that aspect of the options.

by tricer on May 8, 2007 5:14 PM CDT up reply actions

No, it wouldn't
However, under the new rules, Hurley doesn't have to be added to the 40 man roster until after the 2008 season.

So I wouldn't bring him up in September if I didn't have to.

Callups
IIRC, if Hurley were called up in September, he would not burn an option for this season. If he were sent back to the minors in spring training '08 after a callup, that would burn his first option.

Eyre
I know he has little to no long term potential, but the guy has been effective in his mop-up role.  You need a guy like that around, and I'd rather have Littleton in meaningful games in AAA than blowouts up here.  Right now, Littleton/Eyre is about #7 in the bullpen, at best (Gagne, Aki, Benoit, Mahay, Frankie, CJ).

by JBImaknee on May 8, 2007 2:20 PM CDT up reply actions

i dont get this
what difference does it make if hes in blowouts or close games?  the fact that hes not high up in the ranking right now just means he will throw plenty of innings since he wont be reserved for certain situations.

You put your best guys in the bullpen, you dont include a pitcher only good enough to mop up for the sake of not having a pitcher be too good for his role!

i mean, this isnt a situation of 15 at bats a month in the majors or 95 at bats a month in the minors.  i want the best guys you can get in the pen, especially when hes a young guy and not an old vet that will be gone in 5 months.

oh well, it doesnt really matter that much but i dont think it makes sense.

feldman
i thought he was already optioned?
or am i just wishing things?

Eyre is doing long relief, and I suppose it's just the fact that Gagne's a righty, so another righty got sent down.
Well Mr. Burns had done it. The power plant had won it. With Roger Clemens clucking all the while.

Gagne
I have a man crush on Gagne and I'm not afraid to admit it. Well, kinda I'm not afraid to admit, I'm saying this as "Rangerdanger."

eyre
my guess is that there is some buck thinking still left in this clubhouse with the fact that eyre is a bit older. I don't know if that's washington or actually someone from the old regime like chiti or connors.  also though, i feel like they are more comfortable throwing eyre out there for 2+ innings rather than littleton.

Littleton pitched really poorly in ST...
...maybe Worsh just has lingering memories of that poor performance.

Hard to believe that they would disregard what he did for us last year and keep spEyre instead of Wes though.

Poor Wes
He just can't catch a break.

by hiafex on May 8, 2007 3:32 PM CDT reply actions

Well..
...with Joaquin Benoit moving up into a more important role this year I think the thinking is that Eyre could move into his old mop-up role.

by Droopydave on May 8, 2007 3:37 PM CDT up reply actions

yup
and i don't think they want to bring wes up to do that
