Teix Talk

from the Minneaplois Star Tribune:

"How about Lowell?

Since the Twins appear to be looking into upgrading at third base, there might be a player in Boston who is available.

Mike Lowell entered Wednesday batting .311 with 11 homers and 47 RBI. He's in the final year of a contract paying him $9 million, but it's believed the Red Sox would be willing to eat a chunk of the salary.

At first glance, it wouldn't make sense for the Red Sox to part with Lowell, but there are some whispers that Boston would like to move Kevin Youkilis to third base and go after the Texas Rangers' Mark Teixeira."

If Tex went to Boston,
I think that would be cool--it has nothing to do with the Rangers or the value they would get for him, it's for purely superficial, Yankee hating, Red Sox band wagon reasons, but still, I think that would be cool. I'd love to see him in a Red Sox uniform.

Great thing about this...
The Yankees are absolutely streaking.

Unless Seattle and Cleveland are for real (because the Tigers WILL win the Central), the wild card belongs to the AL East.

I'm not sure if Seattle or Cleveland are for real.  Cleveland is going to need some bullpen help.

I think the bidding is going to hit a fever pitch for Gagne, as much as Teixeira.

Really wish Mark hadn't gotten hurt.

by hightowersmith on Jun 14, 2007 10:39 AM CDT   0 recs

Yeah
but it isn't a chronic thing with him. A quad strain shouldn't hurt his trade value.

Well...
If we were going to trade Tex to Boston, I think I'd like to get Youk back as part of thr deal.

by Topgun22 on Jun 14, 2007 10:39 AM CDT   0 recs

exactly
i'm not sure lester and elsbury would be enough in return.

Perhaps
we also get a prospect or 2 that the twins give up for Lowell.

by jshcmp on Jun 14, 2007 10:52 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

hmm
good point. though i dont know that the twins give up much value for lowell... and honestly he's producing well this year so i'm not sure why the redsox would give up his production when its obviously working for him.

If i'm the sox i'm taking the "if it aint broke dont fix it" approach

"Pimps be damned, it's harder out here for a Rangers fan!" "If you don't throw strikes first, you're last."

by rentz on Jun 14, 2007 10:59 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Well, Teixiera is better than Lowell
so you've given the offense a slight upgrade, and you've kept Teixeira away from the Yankees and anyone you'd have to face in the playoffs.  Lowell could cool off, too.  Right now he has a higher OPS+ (141) than any year in his career.  He's 33 and it's more likely he'll regress a bit closer to his 2006 OPS+ (106).

by t ball on Jun 14, 2007 11:03 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I for one
love elsbury. I think we should get some more for tex but a deal centering around those two would be awesome.
Mayberry is a stud. Just give it time.

lester and elsbury
would be nice to get a deal with them as the centerpieces, but i'd want at least 1-2 b level prospects thrown in

by rentz on Jun 14, 2007 11:00 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

well, i dont know about if i would do it
but i know that lester + elsbury would probably be considered a smart trade for the rangers...  especially if that included a b prospect or two thrown in.

and do you guys really think youk is this good? i believe hes a lot closer to 06 (where he was a very mediocre option at 1st) then to what hes done so far this year.

by DSheppard on Jun 14, 2007 10:56 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Why would they give up Youkilis?
He's one of the best hitters in baseball right now.  I don't know that you can realistically hope for more than a Lester-Ellsbury type package.

by t ball on Jun 14, 2007 10:54 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I would be
Happy with a Lester/Ellsbury/Bucholz/Luke Hughes (Twins AA)

by jshcmp on Jun 14, 2007 11:01 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Good luck with that
I don't see it happening.

by t ball on Jun 14, 2007 11:04 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Buchholtz
That's the first name the Rangers should ask for, especially being a local kid, but it seems very, very unlikely.

by hightowersmith on Jun 14, 2007 11:06 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

In fact
I like Bucholz better that Ellsbury.

by jshcmp on Jun 14, 2007 11:12 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

But...
I think we can plug in Ellbury to cf next year. That would save us from a Torii Hunter contract
Mayberry is a stud. Just give it time.

by i hit straight ball very much on Jun 14, 2007 11:13 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Hmmm ...
That alone could make this deal great!

by northtexan95 on Jun 14, 2007 11:20 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

BoSox Standpoint
Let's say they really want Tex.  They would need to open up a hole for him, hence the trade of Lowell.  So anything they get from the Twins is ammunition in the Tex deal.

As for getting Tex, here is what they are trading for:
.264/.357/.490 career #'s on the road
.207/.373/.293 career #'s at Fenway

This hardly looks like a player that will bring back multiple, high caliber prospects.

by Excel Hearts Choi on Jun 14, 2007 11:11 AM CDT   0 recs

if they don't want him
they don't want him.

but, at least this is the first report of somewhat with ammunition actually seeking him.

Forget Johnny Bench, we got Gerry "the Jet" Laird

by ab03 on Jun 14, 2007 11:20 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I'd take...
Lester, Elsbury, and moss. I'd also do Tex and otsuka for those 3 plus buchholtz and another (twins) prospect

Bullpen
The Sox don't need any bullpen help.  In fact they have a roster crunch due to too many bullpen arms.  This is why Romero was DFA'd.  Okajima has been great, and the recent play of Lopez has strengthened their pen.

by Excel Hearts Choi on Jun 14, 2007 11:17 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I see
your point. I just thought I remember hearing them being interested in gagne/otsuka.
Mayberry is a stud. Just give it time.

by i hit straight ball very much on Jun 14, 2007 11:22 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Time will tell
An injury or ineffectiveness could change this, but their pen is made up of veterans (mostly) so they can't option one of them to the minors should they want to improve in the short-term (Gagne or Otsuka).

by Excel Hearts Choi on Jun 14, 2007 11:24 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

What is their complete bullpen
because Im sure either A, there is someone who can be optioned or B, there is a young arm that they could trade to us out of the bullpen in any deal involving both Gagne/Otsuka and Teix.

by Nichols22 on Jun 14, 2007 1:16 PM CDT   0 recs

Pen
Donnelly
Lopez
Okajima
Papelbon
Pinero
Snyder
Timlin

Lopez just got called up and earned a spot in the pen, so he is not going anywhere.  Snyder won't go anywhere because he can spot start and take mop up duty.

by Excel Hearts Choi on Jun 14, 2007 2:05 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Tex
It would make more sense to move him to 3rd base since that was his orignal position.  The only reason he wound up at 1st as I recall was the false assumption Blalock was going to be really good as well.

by doolindalton on Jun 14, 2007 2:09 PM CDT   0 recs

3B
I assume you mean if he were to be traded to Boston.  Youk's original position is 3B as well.

by Excel Hearts Choi on Jun 14, 2007 2:10 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

good god no
that is wrong on all accounts.  tex was pretty much destined for 1b.  he was not a good 3b and he sure as hell won't make a smooth transition.

but if boston thinks they can move him there, so be it.

of course, i don't see anybody trading for pujols and moving him to third.

Forget Johnny Bench, we got Gerry "the Jet" Laird

by ab03 on Jun 14, 2007 2:14 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

my thoughts on trading him to boston
start off by asking for buchholtz

if you cant get him in a deal, ask for lester (who we should be able to get)

i honestly think we get one of lester/ellsbury/bucholtz and ellsbury is 3rd on that list for me

id be happy with lester/brandon moss (stats here: http://www.baseballamerica.com/today/stats/player.php?id=461235)/another player

with the last player(s?) being from a list of:
jed lowrie
manny delcarmen
george kottaras (even though he is doing badly in AAA)
abe alvarez
bryce cox
or any (fairly) good young arm

moss throws another guy into the OF mix, lester is solid (last yr in 15 starts: 7-2, 4.76 era, 43:60 bb:k, 7 HR in 81 IP at age 22)

id be ok with getting delcarmen/lester/moss/another of the guys above (cox? alvarez?)

by knockoutking24 on Jun 14, 2007 8:22 PM CDT   0 recs

No thanks
I'd rather hang on to Tex than do that deal.
I'm officially on the bandwagon: FIRE JOHN DANIELS!!!

by thedirkatron on Jun 14, 2007 11:50 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

honestly
id have no problem w/ hanging on to him until the offseason/next yr

will we? i dont know...

by knockoutking24 on Jun 15, 2007 12:16 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I'd rather do that
than do a shitty deal for mediocre prospects.
I'm officially on the bandwagon: FIRE JOHN DANIELS!!!

by thedirkatron on Jun 15, 2007 12:59 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

my thoughts exactly
that said, my fav deal has gotta be:

kershaw, loney, meloan/broxton for aki/gagne, teix

if we pull that off i will go through the ROOF

by knockoutking24 on Jun 15, 2007 2:30 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Yah
That comes very close to what I dream about getting for Tex. (I prefer Billingsley to Kershaw... trading for pitching prospects that young is just asking for trouble, imo.)

Tex and Gagne for Miller and Maybin

or Tex and Aki for Billingsley, Loney, +?

I know I'm just dreaming on the first one, but the second might be possible. It's really a crap shoot though. These deals come out of nowhere. If you here a deal as "rumored", it's probably never going to happen.

I'm officially on the bandwagon: FIRE JOHN DANIELS!!!

by thedirkatron on Jun 16, 2007 12:52 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Tex
Let's not kid ourselves. Boston isn't trading Lester. They're planning on him being an important part of this team this year. Plus, Schilling will be 41 and a FA at the end of the year and Wakefield is old too.

by Randy Richardson on Jun 14, 2007 8:41 PM CDT   0 recs

re: wake/schil
why wouldnt they trade lester? they have bucholtz, whoever else they sign in FA (will be someone)

they will trade one of buchholtz or lester if it comes down to teix. hell now i wish we had traded em teix for hanley...would have been a win-win. m young no long term contract, and we get hanley (put him in CF? move my to 3b?)

wake throws a knuckleball pitcher, he can pitch (almost) forever. and the sox have an option on him forever (seriously!)

schilling is gone from BOS imo. id take him here on a 1 yr deal :)

by knockoutking24 on Jun 14, 2007 8:54 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Lester
they might need him as a 3 or 4 starter in the playoffs this year. What if Schilling gets hurt?, Wakefield is an inconsistent pitcher (most knucklers are), Dice-K started out well, but has been avg lately. Also, they have no lefty starters. They play a lot of games against the Yankees, who are a mostly lefty lineup.

by Randy Richardson on Jun 14, 2007 9:01 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

right now
htey should be calling up buchholtz before lester.
