Michael Main is DH'ing

The Rangers' second first round pick Michael Main is making his pro debut today, but it's not as a pitcher.  He is in the lineup for the AZL Rangers as the DH and is 1-4 with 3 RBI so far.  He was considered to be a possible 5 tool centerfield prospect by some.

What do you guys think of the Rangers doing this?

it will be interesting
if he hits a lot better than he pitches. the upside is certainly there for both.

Jorge Carrion
That didn't work out so well
Chris Young/Adrian Gonzalez for Aki Otsuka, the new Sammy Sosa/Wilson Alvarez for Harold Baines

It's rookie ball, what can it hurt?
He's only gonna pitch every 5th day, may as well let him bat, instead of just sitting around. Would think it'll shake itself out (pitcher vs. hitter) as he climbs the ladder.

by tklawless on Jun 27, 2007 3:33 PM CDT reply actions

this was kind of why
a was a bit down as main as a pitcher. I know he has alot of potential both as a pitcher and as a hitter but i might have looked at a few other players, rather than main. Hope it works out though.

I don't mind either.
One picture is worth 1,000 denials.

by nirvana on Jun 27, 2007 3:34 PM CDT reply actions

Why not?
Let his bat continue to develop a little in the low minors.  If it is obviously distracting from his pitching, then cut it, but otherwise keep going with it.

Heck, it may have even been a condition of his signing so fast that he could try to convince Texas to allow him to hit also.

by JBImaknee on Jun 27, 2007 3:39 PM CDT reply actions

Not a big deal
He's only getting a few at bats a week from what I've read.

main
i'm curious to see how it plays out, because the rangers could use a stud cf prospect as much as a stud pitcher (and no i dont think borbon is a stud cf prospect)

Main
There is no endangered species list, only a list of creatures Michael Main allows to live.

A study showed the leading causes of death in the United States are: 1. Heart disease, 2. Michael Main, 3. Cancer

Michael Main recently had the idea to sell his urine as a canned beverage. We know this beverage as Red Bull.

"Then I met some friends for a beer, went to a BoDeans's concert, and son of a vondruke, if I didn't leave him at the concert hall."

by RCCook on Jun 27, 2007 4:30 PM CDT reply actions

Not really talking about the idea overall
but in the immediate sense I kind of like it. DHing first kind of gets his feet on the ground, gets him feeling like what he's used to. His nerves should be less for his first pitching appearance, and I suspect that more relaxed guys probably injure themselves a little less often (of course that's almost impossible to substantiate).

And the good thing here is that there is no question what he is, really, even though he is an accomplished position player. With Carrion he really wanted to be a position player and the Rangers wanted him to pitch.

other than Brooks
are there any other recent AL pitchers that have been regular DH/pinch hitters for their team at the same time as starting, or even relieving?

would've been interesting had we traded for Jason Jennings, I bet he'd have about 75 at bats for us right about now...

If Carlos Zambrano
comes to the AL after this year, he might get some.  He's got decent power (6 HR in only 73 AB's last year).

Beavan or Main?
Is it just me or does it seem like the buzz since the draft has been higher on Main than Beavan?

by rangeressary on Jun 27, 2007 7:56 PM CDT reply actions

yea you're right
but i think much of that has to do with beavan not being signed yet.

by Lonerangers on Jun 27, 2007 11:12 PM CDT up reply actions

u have to watch out for the haters on beaven
all the guys who hated his cocky attitude and his comments the day he was drafted will do their best to run him out of town before he makes his 1st start.

im pretty sure they are deciples of the  "sori-haters tribe" (not that there is any way to substantiate such a thing)

im pretty sure once he starts a game they'll shut up though...

Beavan
Well, I was one of the Sori-haters, but I like Beavan. A cocky attitude's not a bad thing if you can back it up.

i think BA had maine as the top HS player in the nation at the start of the season

by knockoutking24 on Jun 27, 2007 11:07 PM CDT reply actions

for those of you who don't know....
BGL's season as a hitter at Loyola Marymount (2001):

.292 / .398 / .435 (.833 OPS) in 154 at-bats;   fanned 26 times and drew 20 BBs;  three bombs, seven doubles and three triples;  led the ballclub with 27 RBIs.

At Santa Ana College in 2000, he was Cal Community College (South) Player of the Year as an OF (a staggering .817 SLG).  Jason Botts was also an all-star in the CCC that year for Glendale.

what do you think of Beaven's attitude?  I guess you can't really answer that but it'd be interesting to see what the guys in the majors and upper minor leagues think of the guy...
