Matt Kata

Here's what I don't get.

The guy can't hit.  As I'm typing this, he's 1 for his last 37.

He's a lousy defensive third baseman.

Presumably, he's on the team because he's a backup shortstop or second baseman.

But today, when Michael Young isn't starting at shortstop, rather than put Kata at short, Ron Washington puts Ramon Vazquez at shortstop and puts Kata at third base.

Which presumably means that Kata, as awful as he his defensively at third base, is even worse defensively at shortstop.

Which means that he has zero value on the major league level.  He can't hit, he can't field, and he's not fast enough to have any value as a pinch runner.

And yet, it seems that our manager is bending over backwards to find ways to get him into the game.  Remember when Kata started at first base, and Washington refused to pinch hit for him?

Or just a couple of days ago, when Kata pinch hit for Vazquez as the go-ahead run in the 8th with a lefty on the mound, even though Victor Diaz is on the bench?

I've come to the conclusion that Kata needs to be taken off the roster ASAP, not because he's not useful -- he's not useful, but as a 25th man who never plays, it doesn't really matter -- but because our manager apparently can't be trusted to leave him on the bench.

I live near Chicago and get lots of Cub games and it reminds me of Dusty Baker's dogged refusal to leave an awful Neifi Perez on the bench.  The only difference was that Perez's defense was actually alright, he just couldn't hit.  As you have pointed out, Kata trumps Perez.  I am apopleptic at this point.

it's rather simple. JD should not have him on this team right now...

Kata
Maybe you are apopleptic because you don't understand anything about baseball. Perhaps you have never heard of a little thing called INTANGIBLES??

Matt Kata bleeds his guts out every day for this team and all you people want to do is talk about some stupid stats he may or may not have.

I'd much rather
The season is lost.  Why not see if Meyer has any value as a utility guy.  He can't be worse than Kata.  At least he has some defensive ability and some speed.

by badradiorules on Jun 3, 2007 4:53 PM CDT reply actions

I didn't realise that
Meyer was still with the organization. If they are playing Kata over Meyer then that is a travesty especially in lieu of how bad this team is defensively. Meyer could play any position in a pinch and serve as a defensive replacement when heaven forbid the team actually has a chance to win one.

And
His dirtbag mentality would actually be refreshing in small doses and may bleed over into other guys on the team.

Kata
Matt Kata bleeds Ranger Red from every pore. This guy is a true gritter and a bleeder. He bleeds hard for this team and all you haters need to take your heads out of the stat book and watch a freakin game every once in a while. Maybe if you people would open your eyes and just look at Matt Kata and his blood-soaked crimson uniform you might start to understand something about baseball beyond what that Bill James dude told you in some stat book you read. Matt Kata = baseball.

Umm
I can assure you that I understand baseball.  If you want gritty and gutty guys, go to a coal mine.  There are a lot of those guys working there.  The reason that those guys aren't on big league rosters is because they can't play.

And Matt Kata can't play.  He doesn't get hits, he doesn't field balls.  If guys should be on big league rosters based soley on grit and guts, I'd still be playing.

More importantly
Kata plays the game The Right Way. If more people played the game The Right Way, the wins and losses would take care of themselves.  If only people would get there noses out of the stat books and actually watch a game, they'd understanc that.

and to top that off
For some reason he plays him against left handers, he is batting 103 against left handers before this game and 263 against right handers. Eric nadel asked him the next day during pregame why he pitch hit with Kata, and he says, he thought Kada would make contact...Does Wash ever look at stats?

what you don't understand about batting 103 against lefties is the grits. It doesn't matter if he bats .103 against lefties because he is a wholesome white boy from Ohio who might make contact, so just shut up ok? Kata is grits.

Washington
I'm quickly coming to the conclusion that he's just not a good manager, and isn't going to last long, which will be another negative on Daniels' scorecard.

I'm sure everyone will jump on me for being a "Billy Beane lover" or something of the sort, but this kind of crap doesn't happen, or at least it doesn't happen for long, in Oakland.  Beane will just call his manager, remind him who the boss is, and tell him to stop playing Kata.  It may be micro-managing, but it prevents this crap from happening.

by BurntOrange on Jun 3, 2007 5:49 PM CDT reply actions

kata
see... the way i see it is if the gm doesn't want the manager playing a guy like kata then he needs to get rid of the player. simple solution.

by rentz on Jun 3, 2007 5:53 PM CDT up reply actions

Well
If the GM wants the player on the roster as the 25th man, someone who doesn't play much at all, in order to keep other guys in AAA getting regular ABs, and the manager insists on playing him, then just getting rid of the player isn't necessarily the solution.

by BurntOrange on Jun 3, 2007 5:58 PM CDT up reply actions

by rentz on Jun 3, 2007 6:19 PM CDT up reply actions

what can he possibly learn in aaa/the minors
all he can do is take AB's away from players who need them to develop.

lets not kid ourselves, the rangers do NOT NEED a backup utility guy taking up space in teh minors - were just not that good - - we need players to get ABs and develop.

by knockoutking24 on Jun 3, 2007 6:21 PM CDT up reply actions

The problem is....
We don't have any infield prospects in AAA, with Arias out.

I agree that there's no need to invest ABs in Matt Kata, but taking them away from the likes of Desi Relaford, Tug Hulett and Drew Meyer wouldn't get me overly worked up.

Other than Jason Botts, our AAA team is basically an accumulation of worthless crap.

by BurntOrange on Jun 3, 2007 6:27 PM CDT up reply actions

i agree
im all for meyer.

at least you can use him as a pinch runner, right?

meyer is a beast! lol

o yea, one more thing. if we end up (again) with JHJ, vazques, kata all on the roster at the same time (with botts in the minors) i think i may lean towards joining the fire JD bandwagon...

by knockoutking24 on Jun 3, 2007 6:14 PM CDT reply actions

Washington played Vazquez at SS
To see if he can be the Utility guy after Blalock gets back.

I'll bet he tries him in the OF as well, and if he does well, then he drops Kata.

by subsidiarity on Jun 3, 2007 6:29 PM CDT reply actions

take a deep breath
It's wash's job to use the 25 guys he's given. Remember, it's a 162 game season, the regulars need to rest.

It's clear that cruz and kata are both gone when wilkerson and hairston come back. So calm down.

There's bound to be 1, possibly 2 guys that don't get many at-bats on any team - so called utility guys. These are slots reserved for veterans who can step in when needed. These slots are NOT for guys you want to develop.

All that having been said, Wash shouldn't have pinch-hit Kata for Vazquez the other night when he had Diaz on the bench too.

by Randy Richardson on Jun 3, 2007 6:29 PM CDT reply actions

Kata is not...
a guy you want to develop.  The guy is nearly 30 years old and has over 500 major league at bats.  He is what he is, a veteran utility guy who is junk.

by rangers85 on Jun 3, 2007 6:35 PM CDT up reply actions

kata
I wouldn't use the word junk, but I have no argument with your point.

by Randy Richardson on Jun 3, 2007 6:37 PM CDT up reply actions

i would. junk fits nicely.
his ops is 52.
hes hitting under 200 in 66 ab's
hes 1 for 37+
he has 5 walks/18 k's
his obp is .264

so yes, i would call him junk

i mean honestly, there is NO WAY that meyers can be any worse than him.

think about it - this guy is a worse hitter that brad ausmus and adam everett -- and at least they play good defense!!

lets face it, kata is HANDS DOWN the worst player (stats wise) on our team right now.

by knockoutking24 on Jun 3, 2007 7:37 PM CDT up reply actions

Kat A
"his ops is 52"

That would be awesome if his OPS really was 52. He'd be 5 for 195 (all singles) with no walks.

Actually, his OPS must be pretty damn close to 52 during this little 1 for 37 setback he's got going on.

At any rate...who cares? Matt Kata's not here to make "OPS" or whatever other b.s. stat Bill James told you about in your stat book. He's here to play baseball and it's just too bad none of the other players on this team play with even a tenth of the amount of hard-nosed grit Kata consistently brings to the table.

Is Hairston any different than Kata, really?  What can he do to help the club in the future.  Why not see if Meyer can do what Hairston can do or better?

At least we have something invested in Meyer.  If he can't do it, you can always go out and get a Hairston cheap in the offseason.

Horseshit
How can one team be so damn bad?  You could not try to put together a worst team if you tried. What in the hell is Ron Washington thinking? He does things that make you wonder if he has ever sat in a dugout before.  I see him make moves that you just sit and wonder, why? Does Art Howe just sit on the bench and collect a paycheck?  You would think Ron Washington would be learning by now, but you still see moves that make you wonder.  I want to give Ron Washington the benefit of the doubt, but he makes it very hard to support him.  Little JD, should be gone, he has gutted this team over the last year and is now paying for getting fleeced in several deals.  Other GM's must be licking their chops in anticipation the fire sale that is about to take place.  Little JD will get burned again.  I have no faith in little JD and the upcoming draft.  They will screw it up somehow, someway.

Gee, I wonder how Trey Hillman is doing in Japan this year.
