Jim Callis of BA
Was on sports radio in OKC and said the Rangers want a college position player in the 1st round. I don't subscribe to BA so sorry if this is old news. He specifically mentioned LaPorta and Borbon. He also backed up the Rangers when the radio host bashed us for our pitching. The host tried to say we need to draft all pitchers then Callis said we won't have position prospects then. Callis then went on the say that Hurley and Diamond look like good prospects and that we have drafted better lately. Of course, the host is a huge Red Sox fan so they can do no wrong. He sounded disappointed when Callis didn't have the Red Sox in the top 3 in talent evaluation.

Where were the Rangers...

He only mentioned 3 or 4...
Brewers
Rays
I also want to say Angels, but I could be wrong.
I know for sure he mentioned the top 3 and to his credit he had a disclaimer in there about being the 1st and 2nd overall in picks every year. So the Rays choice was discounted a bit.
I thought it was interesting that Callis said basically not to completely blame JD on the current state of the Rangers.

It certainly isn't all his fault

I'll pass judgement for a couple years

I haven't seen any evidence that suggests:
Washington is very good as a manager at developing young players. Which of the young players are you seeing blossom? Scrap Iron Kinsler? Engelberg Laird? Tejeda?

Oakland is evidence enough for me

I wasn't aware
There is a lot of difference between being a coach and a manager. Maybe we should flipflop Howe and Washington, so Washington can actually work with the young players.

I will admit
Here's the deal DJ. I look at Oakland as the model for overachieving. Obviously their pitching has been key, but I don't look at any of their players lately and think superstar yet they are always in contention.

I'm not surprised
Callis is a level-headed guy, and he can look at this situation from the outside, though with some industry knowledge. It doesn't surprise me that he's not all freaked out like so many of our fans are, and just throwing knives wherever he can think to throw them.
Daniels has made a big mistake in a trade, has made a few other moves that weren't inspired but didn't really hurt us much, and hasn't made that great move that made our offseason yet. But this was a really tough situation that he came into, with overperforming players having their contracts up and the core talents on the team underperforming (Blalock, Tex last year and Young, Millwood this year, for example).
I'm saying this so much that it's becoming my mantra, but let's see how things look in August.
