Around SBN: Clippers Need To Realize That Spurs Are The Anti-Grizzlies

At #24, the Rangers select Michael Main, HS RHP

Huh.

I would have preferred Harvey.

Main is 6'1", good athlete, can bring it at 97 mph.  The fact that he's relatively short for a pitcher is an indication that John Hart ain't calling the shots anymore.

BA had the Rangers taking him at #17 in their last mock draft.

Harvey
Obviously teams have the impression he'll be attending UNC with Porcello

by Wes Cox on Jun 7, 2007 3:25 PM CDT reply actions

Boras
I would say we are avoiding Boras... otherwise you have to take Harvey there right (or if the ML contract doesn't bother you, Porcello)?

by Brandon Wilson on Jun 7, 2007 3:25 PM CDT reply actions

Horrible draft
If you are going to take high school pitchers, you should at least take the best one.

by BurntOrange on Jun 7, 2007 3:26 PM CDT reply actions

Porcello
Or, if you are convinced he won't sign without a major league contract, then take Harvey.

That's assuming you are going to take a high school pitcher, which is never a good thing to do in the first place.

Always?
Really?  Come on, now, BO.

Never a good thing to do?
I think taking Kazmir instead of Drew Meyer just might have been a good thing to do.

I believe I read a recent study of high school pitching which said it was no longer as clear cut as the old James study.

I believe it is going to be a year to year thing, and this year, one of the deepest parts of the draft was high school pitching.

If everyone is convinced that college pitching is the only pitching worth drafting, you can bet the ranch that High School pitchers just have to be a better value.

Smoker..
What happened to him? He doesn't have the same signability issues that Harvey and Porcello have does he?

All the excitement I had after Beavan disappeared when we passed on Harvey/Porcello/Smoker. Oh well, I guess there's always hope one will fall to #35, but my guess is a hitter at #35.

by Topgun22 on Jun 7, 2007 3:31 PM CDT reply actions

Smoker
signability not an issue, but apparently he did not finish the year very well

Possibly Borbon
If he keeps falling, but I wouldn't mind another pitcher.  Chances are one of Harvey/Porcello/Smoker will be available.

Beavan & Main
BA had them at 13 and 23 on their top 200, so I don't think either was an overdraft or a bad pick.

I don't know
the more I think about it, the happier I am with Main - he throws strikes, throws hard and has a few other pitches to work with...what's not to like?

Not saying...
that Main was necessarily a bad pick, but everything seems to indicate that Porcello is much closer and projects to be a clear #1.

by manny being manny on Jun 7, 2007 3:44 PM CDT reply actions

Well
You have to take into account Porcello's money demands.  If he was demanding a major league contract, it is completely understandable that they stayed away from him.

by jf55510 on Jun 7, 2007 3:46 PM CDT up reply actions

Based on absolutely nothing
I'm predicting that Main turns out better than Beavan, though he may take more time to be ready.

Blame has to be shared
among all of the other teams that passed on Porcello as well, IF he turns out to be as good as advertised.  But just in reading some of the things about Main, I don't see what jumps out about Porcello so much more...it's a crapshoot, and you don't want to bet $10 million on a crapshoot, so I understand the move

by manny being manny on Jun 7, 2007 3:57 PM CDT reply actions

Sandwich Rd...
Basically if you lose highly rated free agents, you get compensatory picks for losing good players. Those compensatory picks come in the form of taking the pick from the team that signed away your free agent, or sandwich round picks, which are in between rounds 1 and 2.

by Topgun22 on Jun 7, 2007 3:59 PM CDT up reply actions

So...
How many sandwich picks are there?

over at baseball prospectus
Kevin Goldstein (1:32:18 PM PST): And they don't, they take Michael Main, who slipped a little bit with some bumpy late-season outings. Excellent arm, crazy great athlete, very good pick, and the kind of guy the White Sox would have loved to have seen on their board still. White Sox want upside, and they want a power arm, but who's left that's easily signable?

BSmith (1:35:05 PM PST): Michael Main and Blake Beavan are two totally different pitchers with one thing in common: big-time fastballs. Of the two, I actually like Main a little bit more, even if ends up a reliever in the end. His fastball has been so good for so long, and the power curve had led to some Tom Gordon comparisons. I like it.

by Topgun22 on Jun 7, 2007 4:15 PM CDT up reply actions

Main
reminds me a ton of Kyle Drabek. Small righties with tons of athleticism. Both have similar short, compact deliveries, and both could have gone in the top 100 as position players.

If Main is Drabek minus the character issues, we got a steal.

If we weren't going to go with the expensive twins (Harvey, Porcello), then Main would have been my pick here.

Just a wasted pick now......
unless you wanna give Harvey 18-20 money (if you were gonna do that you would've picked him there). Borbon has no leverage, no chance Harvey's signing for #35+ money....off to college, unless somebody goes way over slot.
