OT - Houston Goodness

I'm flying into Houston tomorrow morning (MON) and will be there for the week as a buisness trip.  When I travel, I usually tend to only have time to expierience resturaunts and great food.  Any recomendations for some great Mexican, Tex-Mex, steakhouse, italian, Thai, sushi, etc.?  I get to travel 3-4 weeks a month, so if anyone needs recomendations for the Southeast (BLT to Miami over to HST), let me know!  Thank you in advance for the suggestions.

Steakhouse
The steakhouse that I really like is Fleming's...it is on either W. Alabama or Westheimer (I forget which), off of Greenbriar.

Mexican food, my favorite is a little family owned place in a strip mall in Southwest Houston called Poblano's.

There's also El Tiempo, which was started by Mama Ninfa's son after Mama Ninfa sold out.  Excellent Mexican food.

Flemings
is my all time favorite.  I've rented condo's above and behind the Flemings in San Diego, La Jolla and Los Angeles so I could walk to enjoy the bone-out ribeye every Friday (Fleming Fridays!).  Oh ya baby.  I was stoked to learn we had one here in Tampa, and there is one next to my office in DC too.  I recommend Flemings to everyone - soo good.  Tops Ruths Chris, Charley's, and any other steakhouse you can think of.

Poblano's will be on my agenda since I agree with you on steakhouses.

Keep them coming guys and gals!  Thanks!

Fleming's
+1

Love that place as well.  Great cuts.  Great service.  Decent prices.

It's owned by the Outback people, and is considered their high-end place.

We ate there as a celebration for scoring tickets to Game 3 of the 2005 WS...

Outback
owns Flemings???  I've never heard that.  Interesting.  Any links on that - or did someone mention that to you?

Also
Truluck's is great, as well, for steak or for crab.

Mark's is one of the real hot spots, but I wasn't all that impressed when I ate there.

Another endorsement
For Poblano's.  Been there once, it was excellent.
Time does funny things. The worst of which is, it keeps moving when you don't.

Ah... Houston restaurants.
I love them there.  I really miss Houston restaurants since I left college.  Of course, I spent way too much money eating at them...

Best Vietnamese / Trendy SE Asian: Mo Mong - Westheimer 1 block W of Montrose.

Favorite Thai - Thai Cottage, Bellaire & Rice Ave.  I loved this place for some reason.  I hope it is still there.  Probably too cheap to worry about if you are on a business account though.  Great Thai restaurants all over though.

Favorite Chinese - Shanghai River, Westheimer 1 block E of Kirby.  One semester I also averaged Fu's Garden on Richmond/610 4 lunches a week...

Mexican food and BBQ are better in Fort Worth and Dallas, and yes, Mama Ninfa sold out.  Goode company is overrated, imo - don't waste your time.

Italian - I liked La Morra, 1 block SE of Westheimer and Montrose (lots of restaurants in that area)

Marks was really cool when I was there - but I was a glossy eyed college kid with a hot date that night... But I thought it was better than lots of the other swanky places I went to in town.

BBQ...
What BBQ is good in Dallas?  I haven't had any.

by bdavison94 on Jul 15, 2007 11:50 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

okay... Fort Worth
I threw Dallas in there, simply to not be a Fort Worth snob.

But the best BBQ is in Fort Worth.

Cousins, Risky's, Angelos, and Railhead are all excellent BBQ places.  Cousins is so good I have my parents send their BBQ sauce to me here in California.

FtW bbq
what is the name of that old place that has the waitresses with bikini tops?

I think it is only open for lunch.

Me and Billy the Kid never got along. I didn't like the way he cocked his hat and he wore his gun all wrong.

Grew up in Dallas...
so never made it to Fort Worth for BBQ.  Have to trust you on that.

You're missing out...
A BBQ pilgrimage to FW is something all true Texans should make...

For reference to the post below about styles:

These are a mix between local common knowledge and my opinions: feel free to correct me if any of you feel otherwise

Angelo's - Ribs
Risky's - Sausage + Atmosphere (in stockyards)
Cousin's - Brisket + Sauce.  Also some good sweet tea...

by JBImaknee on Jul 16, 2007 12:59 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

My correction
Railhead beats them all for sliced (brisket) and chopped beef. One of my best friends is a literal cousin of the Cousins owners, and periodically, when I visit, I give the place another shot w/ him. Still disagree.

Angelos probably has the best atmosphere, better than Riscky's, in my opinion. I LOVE the Northside, but that joint doesn't add much to it. The inside of Angelos is what I think of when I think of good Texas BBQ.

Angelos has gone downhill a good deal (foodwise) in the past 5 or 10 years.

And sauce is blasphemy. This ain't Kansas City...:)

If the Scoot stays mute, you must commute.

Angelo's
I definitely agree that Angelo's interior and atmosphere combine for the quintessential Texas BBQ place.
Hit me in the eye...maybe I can see better.

I guess...........
you havent heard of Dickey's or Colters?
I stand corrected

Sonny Bryan's
is good.
Damn...man someone seriously needs to pull the monkey out of Wendy's ass.

Dallas BBQ
One of the best is Big Al's.
Inwood Road, I believe.

BBQ
I agree on Goode Co.

For barbecue, I go to Demeris.

by Adam J. Morris on Jul 16, 2007 10:21 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Never liked Demeris.....
I like Goode Co., but it is over rated.

My favorite in Houston was Luling.

BBQ is tough though....very much to taste.

by bdavison94 on Jul 16, 2007 11:09 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

"very much to taste", and.............
depends on which type of meat your eating(ribs, brisket, sausage, chicken, etc).
I stand corrected

by rkh on Jul 16, 2007 11:14 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

True.....
I'm a brisket and sausage guy.

Otto's
was my favorite in Houston, but kind of out of the way up there on Memorial.

by JBImaknee on Jul 16, 2007 1:00 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Next time you're in Houston.....
try Luling City Market.  In a little shopping center where Richmond meets 610.  The sauce is more like a carolina sauce.  So good.  Brisket is great.  Known for their link.

I used to live right there in Afton Oaks.

by bdavison94 on Jul 16, 2007 3:06 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Ha...
I used to live right across the 610 for a year and a half (Providence Uptown apts).  I always wanted to go there, but for some reason never did (I got take-out from the Fu's Garden next door about 100 times (seriously) that year...).  Next time I'm there, I'll go by.

by JBImaknee on Jul 16, 2007 3:27 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Fu's Garden
That one is now "Hu's Garden" or "Hin's Garden" (I forget which), because Mr. Fu is running Yao Ming's restaurants for him.

by Adam J. Morris on Jul 16, 2007 4:06 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Huh...
That's weird.  You'd think they'd keep the name.

Are Yao's restaurants any good?  Or did he just buy up some existing chain and rename it?

by JBImaknee on Jul 16, 2007 4:42 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Huston
Sucks.
Best advice?
Don't go.
Every day is game day...except for off days
