Scott Olsen

A 23 year old lefty strikeout pitcher, who's had some rough outings with the Marlins.  Just recently suspended a couple of games for fighting with teammate Sergio Mitre.  Various boards and items speculate Florida would like to dump him. I have nothing on his background except high K rates through the minors (and apparently a fiery attitude).  Talk has it Florida wants a serviceable outfielder for him, maybe that's just speculation.  Any interest in a live arm, live wire lefty?

Servicable outfielders?
Who would we send?

Florida OF
Well they have Hermida in RF and Willingham in LF, so if they are expecting back a ML ready player I guess it would need to be someone for CF.  Young and cheap seems to be a prerequisite for dealing with Marlins.  Boggs would be the only guy that comes close to fitting that description.

If they are just sick of him and want to dump him without needing a specific position back, maybe Mayberry would be enough to land him.  That might sound high, but it would actually be pretty good value for a mid-first round 05 pick.  A high ceiling, ML experienced, strikeout lefty is potentially worth a lot more than what you would typically get out of that draft position.

Or maybe Florida values draft choices enough that they would take a FA to be (like Lofton, we pay the salary) to collect the picks.

Me and Billy the Kid never got along. I didn't like the way he cocked his hat and he wore his gun all wrong.

I wonder if they would take say...
Wilkerson for him?

marlins
I don't think they'd just give a guy like olsen away, they will drive a hard bargain even though they obviously want to trade him. My speculation is the rangers don't have the pieces the marlins would want.

Get him
but only if we get Elijah Dukes as well.

Can you say "roommates"?

Greatness.

if u could get him and Dukes, I wanna pitch high and inside.  I just wanna see the theatrics.

I like Olson though.  Or used to.  Id still grab him.  DWI and all.  Talk about buy low.  He went to jail last night.

Uh oh
Olsen was charged this morning with a DUI, violence, and resisting arrest. I think the Marlins will take about anything for this kid but who would want him?

by rangerfan09 on Jul 21, 2007 8:35 PM CDT   0 recs

Why would they take
almost anything for him? You'd think this is the exact time they wouldn't want to deal him. His value will likely never be lower.

If McCarthy did the same thing tonight, do you think JD would be falling all over himself to trade him for pennies on the dollar tomorrow?

Because
he is a cancer to their team and I'm sure they want to get rid of him pretty soon. I don't think they can hold onto him long enough to get the appropriate value for him. It is clear that Olsen doesn't care about the team and is really hurting the Marlins.

I didn't realize you had inside knowledge of the clubhouse.

Boy...
People sure do throw that "cancer" label around a lot.

I don't know, most of the guys that I've ever worked with that got a DUI, we didn't call them cancers.

It's not just the DUI
It's the several verbal and physical alteracations with players and coaches as well as the DUI factor. I don't know, it could all be immaturity or it could be who he is.

by rangerfan09 on Jul 21, 2007 10:03 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

It's...
a 23 yo kid with a shitload of money.  I acted like that when I was 23, and I didn't have hundreds of thousands dollars.  JD talked about makeup being important at the Newberg Q&A, but it's not that important.

i just think its funny that he got stun gunned.  i mean thats great stuff.  "Hey honey, how was your day?"  "Kinda sweet dear, i got to stun gun a major league ballplayer tonight."

Why not a three-way deal?
We send Benoit to PHI;
PHI sends CF'er Michael Bourn to FLO;
We get Olsen.

Olsen
from what I've seen, he is a lot more talented than Elijah Dukes.

I'd take a chance on him - a real chance too, giving up a real prospect to get him.  If he were to clean up his act, he could be a solid part of our rotation.

by JBImaknee on Jul 23, 2007 12:56 PM CDT   0 recs

I think
if you get him here and (with the help of his judge at the upcoming DUI trial...) tell him that you believe in him and you want to help him straighten himself out.
