poveda throwing a no hitter

omar poveda is throwing a no hitter for clinton today into the 6th inning. seems like everyone thinks this guys potential is only as a reliever or a #3 or 4 starter. but today he is kicking some ass. guys like poveda, phillips, and kiker look good at clinton this year. hopeuflly they can turn into some major league quality pitchers, plus correct me if im wrong there all pretty young. i think poveda is only 20 and kiker is 19 for sure. dont know how old phillips is but he cant be to old. those guys with whittleman, teagarden and some of our other young prospects llooks pretty good

Just about to post that...
6K, 2 BB

I still think he'll stay the year in Clinton, but it'd be fun to see how he does in Bakersfield.

didnt know how old phillips was
but just found out that he is 20 years old. three guys like that where the oldest one is 20 looks pretty good for our future, although the future could be 3-4 years away

Infield hit
with two outs in the 8th. Whittleman got a glove on it in foul territory, but couldn't get enough on the throw.

Got a great ovation after the hit.

Huh.
Good to know.

Any idea what his pitch count was after 8?

No clue
I was working on some stuff, remembered that Clinton was playing this afternoon, and thought I'd tune in online when I saw his line. I only heard the 8th inning, and I don't think the radio guys said anything about it.

Went back and checked
the post-game writeup on MILB.com. Poveda was at 91 pitches through 8 innings. He was on a 100 pitch count, but the coaches would have let him have the no-hitter if it was still there in the 9th.

clinton seems to be to have a pretty good team
not that i care as long as our prospects develop and keep getting better. but wouldnt you think they would have a better record?

Poveda's done
8 IP, 1 H, 3 BB, 7 K.

thats a kickass line
hopefully those three guys will stay together all the way up through the majors

sticking together...
Nah, let's trade one of them... PKP just doesn't have a good ring like DVD had.

Nick
KeePPers?

We'll drop the question mark once they are all in AA and all performing well.

You down with KPP?
Yah, you know me.

Poveda on the season:
10-4, 2.85 ERA, 113.2 IP. 85 H, 31 BB (1.021 WHIP), 107 K.

And he doesn't turn 20 until the end of September.

Main threw well today also
In the second start of his career, Main threw well again. He was on a pitch count of around 35 pitches and this was his final line:
2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K

He is supposed to be on a pitch count all season so we probably won't see him pitch more than three or four innings, but it appears he is adjusting nicely to pro ball. His season line is:
3.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 3 K

Font
wasn't horrible either, 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 3K. And you have to keep in mind that this guy just turned 17 and will start next season at that age.

Now,
if Castillo would start picking up I'd be ecstatic.

Projections
You seem to suggest that having the upside of a major league #3 starter as a 19 year old in A-ball isn't great.  Let me assure you, if people are saying that about him it's a very good thing.

I mean, realistically Hurley is one of the top five pitchers that the Rangers have ever developed and many see him as a potential major league #2.

For those in the know...
Is it possible to jump straight from Clinton to Frisco?  Or is the jump to BAK and the jet streams and softball parks of the CAL League an inevitibility?

I know the guy's just 19, but I don't want the great performance at Clinton get dented by going to the hitter-friendly CAL League...

by HypoLuxa on Jul 23, 2007 9:58 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Is it possible?
Sure.  Kinsler went from Clinton to Frisco.

But that's a pretty big jump for a guy who isn't even 20 to make, and the Texas League is fairly hitter-friendly, as well.

Can vs. should
I guess is what my question should've been.  He could go anywhere, but realistically SHOULD he go to Frisco?  I guess the powers that be as a rule are more aggressive in advancing legit hitting talents rather than pitching, but the Clinton Triumvirate of Phillips, Omar and Kiker are going to be hard to be patient on...at least for me... =/

I just hope everyone remembers his numbers this year when they start seeing Omar allowing 3-4 homeruns every outing while a Blaze.

and yeah the Texas League isn't a pitcher's league but it is more realistic than the CAL...

by HypoLuxa on Jul 23, 2007 11:23 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well
Hurley, Danks, and Diamond all went to the cal league and none of them seemed to be hurt by it.

Heck, Volquez even broke out there.

Gas, brake, honk. Gas, brake, honk. Honk, honk, punch. Gas, gas, gas.

Fair enough
I didn't really know if there had been a history of skipping BAK at all in the past with SP's.  And yeah if Kiker, Poveda, and Zach can get through in the style of Hurley and Danks I'd be ecstatic.

by HypoLuxa on Jul 23, 2007 2:12 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Eh
I'd be surprised if they did that with a pitcher, let alone one as young as Poveda.

Then again, they did it last year for one start.

A to AA Jump
I have heard from several players, most notably Travis Metcalf and Steve Murphy that the biggest jump in the minor leagues was from High A to Double A. Poveda is a fly ball pitcher so jumping High A wouldn't be a bad idea, if the level of play is similar to that of Low A. However, if it is a big jump, he probably needs to head to the launching pad that is Bakersfield.
