Hurley and Galarraga 7/26

Galaragga: 4 IP, 1 ER, 5 H, 1 BB, 3 K
Hurley: 4 IP, 1 ER, 1 H, 2 BB, 5 K

Hurley just gave up a homer for run #2.

Oklahoma's up 12-2, and all 12 runs have come via the homer. Diaz has two and Cruz has one. Diaz and Cruz both hit grand slams.

Hurley's working fast and hitting 95+.

Cruz
Had some good upper minors numbers before, but this trip down to AAA he's been a monster.  I hope the "fix" sticks.

Unfortunatly
I just think he is raking against sub-par competition.

Check out
The comparative stats.  Scott's site is up through July 25, and figure in the past three days' output which ups all the numbers a bit.

It at least is worth comparison, given the same competition for Cruz and Botts.  Both made some at-bat changes when sent down. Botts is a little larger sample.

Yep
I heard from someone who has seen him several times at OKC that he appears to have the same approach at the plate, that is pull everything and swing as hard as he can. He is just getting a lot more mistake pitches at AAA and is killing them. If he hasn't changed his approach, I see him struggling again in the big leagues.

by uthornfan on Jul 26, 2007 9:00 PM CDT up reply actions

Could be
But the commentary I got was from an interview with Cruz (and I can't find the link now darn it) where he said he had to open his stance a bit more, and is now seeing the ball with both eyes while previously he wasn't quite as sure about seeing the ball.  This was also corroborated by an OKC coach.  If he's back to lean, pull, and yank that would not be good.

Hurley's done after 5
Pitch count was 87.

Galarraga's through 6. 1 R, 6 H, 1 BB, 4 K.

by Outworlder47 on Jul 26, 2007 8:59 PM CDT reply actions

You sure?
The live box has Galarraga done after five as well.

5 IP, 6 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 4 K.

They have Shoemaker coming in to pitch the sixth inning.

by uthornfan on Jul 26, 2007 9:03 PM CDT up reply actions

Nevermind on Galarraga
MILB screwed up, apparently. Same line, but 5 innings.

In General
those guys at OKC have some gaudy numbers.

Hurley
Great outings keep on comin!

5IP  2H  2R  2BB  6K's  ERA: 3.21

The first hit was a poke single.  The second was a HR.  Only the 2nd he has given up in 6 AAA starts.  It was a 3-2 count in a 12-1 game.  He wasn't going to walk him.  I tip my hat to him.

Was hitting 95 many times in the 4th and 5th.

They keep yanking him in each one of his starts at 90 pitches.  Wonder if that is for a future call up and not wanting to burn him out in AAA or just saving his arm in general.  He consistently pitches in the 6th and 7th innings.

This kid is going to be a stud!

no need in him going further
heck, he had a tremendous lead.

Good job Hurley. Keep it up and maybe we'll see you come spring training mext year. No need to rush Eric Hurley. Leave him at Oklahoma till next year.

by LtDan on Jul 26, 2007 9:38 PM CDT up reply actions

THERE'S NO NEED TO RUSH HIM...
... but, at the very least, i would bring him up in September... maybe for a start or two... or three... just so he can have a look.  not to pressure him, or force him to make adjustments or anything... but just so he can get a feel for the bigs...

i don't know.  it'll be interesting to see what happens.

by oc on Jul 27, 2007 11:31 AM CDT up reply actions

You bring up a good point...
not so much that he is on a 90 pitch count now, but has he been on a regiment this year aimed towards a September callup?  If not, then I hope we don't burn him out by bringing him up when it's not necessary.

I'm all for keeping him in AAA this year.  We'll see plenty of him in Arlington next season.  No need to rush if we don't have to.

strict pitch counts
a big reason why there are so few aces developed.

Between
Diaz, Botts, and Cruz we have some players that can freakin' tear up some AAA pitching!

by Mike Simonek on Jul 26, 2007 9:44 PM CDT reply actions

exactly
hopefuly Sosa gets traded and makes room for Botts. JD has been saying Botts will get playing time but not until JD can assure he will get full time AB. It's really ashame cause Botts should have been getting full time at bats way before now.

Edinson Volquez
I was thinking he should be called up in a couple of weeks? Yes or no?
Semper Fidelis

by LtDan on Jul 26, 2007 11:10 PM CDT reply actions

Nope
But Hurley should be.... I have started to read more and more on Hurley being called up the last two months to get the kinks out and get his feet wet with major leaguers..... I can't find the page right now but I saw when Washington said that Hurley would be called when the Rangers felt he was ready.  It didn't matter if it was July, August, September, or Spring Training next year.  They are not concerened with his "clock" due to the fact that they know, more than likely, he will never see his 5th year arbitration time.  They will lock him up MUCH sooner than that!

I look forward to seeing him in Arlington much SOONER than LATER!

by bigups41 on Jul 27, 2007 2:49 AM CDT up reply actions

SO
if Hurley does get the call, and Padilla's healthy next year, we've got the rotation set with Millwood, McCarthy, Padilla, Loe and Hurley???
