seems like in his last 2 starts
he'a had trouble in the 1st inning and then been great after that...big time talent , now whether he puts it all together is a different question

Huh?
How did he have 4 BB and walk two batters? Unless it was HBP...
Obviously you're not a golfer.

First inning
I think the two walks and a bunch of singles was referring only to the first inning.

by uthornfan on Jul 29, 2007 6:49 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Gotcha.
Obviously you're not a golfer.

Walks
Still not the progression I'd like to see from Volquez though.
Obviously you're not a golfer.

Luis Mendoza tonight
5 2/3 shutout innings.  A 3 WPs, but still...

3.95 ERA on the season now.  Middling peripherals, but he's still just 23.

Not a bad return for Bryan Corey.

Jon Greene - .307/.377/.624
He's 22 - swap him out with Manny Pina for the rest of the season?

by shroomer on Jul 29, 2007 9:12 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Depends
on how good his defense is.

by FirebatM3 on Jul 29, 2007 9:15 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Don't give up on Pina
I think that Clinton is the right place for him.

by Brett Perryman on Jul 29, 2007 9:37 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Maybe so
but Greene is raking.  Another of the nice surprises of the kiddoes this year.

Greene a good candidate to do Hawaiian or Venezuelan Winter Ball?  And what's the difference in competition levels between the two?

by HypoLuxa on Jul 29, 2007 10:02 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Hey
I don't mean to boohoo Greene. He was an 8th rounder, so combined with his performance that bears watching. If he's ready to get a look in the MWL, good. But I wouldn't demote Pina.

by Brett Perryman on Jul 29, 2007 10:13 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Pinatron
Do you think he repeats the MWL in 2008?  With maxitron going to AA in 2008 it might mean Greenetron starts out in BAK next year.  Maybe Greenetron [who's really almost 22] could go up to Clinton now to split time at C and DH for the L-Kings - send Harrigatron back to SPO or AZ.

Yo soy Horsedooty-tron

P.S.  Shouldn't Santanatron's brkn finger be healed soon?  Been a month ...

Santana
He is playing for the AZL Rangers tonight.

by uthornfan on Jul 29, 2007 10:35 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Nice catch
I've been looking for West to reappear so didn't notice that.  kewl-atron

by shroomer on Jul 29, 2007 10:40 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah
I wouldn't be surprised if Pina and Santana are the Clinton catchers, with Pina potentially moving up if anything clicks a little. And Bakersfield doesn't seem like a stretch for Greene given his performance and college background.

Glad to see that Santana is back for the last month.

Pina
June was hopeful, but July has been awful(.384 OPS).  Even in June his numbers were very av. dependent, only 1 BB.  Not much to go on.
mmmmmm...64 slices of American cheese...

I know but
I think that there is just more there than meets the eye when you are only reading milb.com lines. He's got to get stronger, but it's not like he can't make contact. He's 10-59 in July, but with one strikeout. 3-32 lately and no strikeouts. He's obviously not a powerful hitter at this point, but that smacks of being tired to me. So bring someone like Greene up and let them split time, give Tracy innings behind the plate, whatever. I just wouldn't drop the guy off the radar like I sense some are looking to do.

by Brett Perryman on Jul 29, 2007 10:23 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, I'm not saying
dump him, I'm just lamenting his performance lately after he showed so much in June.  I think we know he's not going to be a walk machine or power hitter at this point, and he's still only 20, but I was hoping he'd keep that up.  At least they're being patient with him and putting him out there nearly every day.

How is his defensive game?  Since they have so much catching depth now, is he the kind of toolsy guy that can sweeten a deal this offseason?

mmmmmm...64 slices of American cheese...

Pina
His defense is the point. He's excellent.

From the Prospect Handbook before last (prior to his injury however):

"excellent build and catch-and-throw skills...good receiver with great hands, a very strong, accurate arm and a quick release...pop times at 1.87...significant progress calling games...makeup is outstanding, has learned to speak English and handles a staff well...even if he never becomes more than a below-average hitter he still could be a big league backup catcher."

He's hit for contact and taken a few walks at times. What he hasn't done is put up a really high average or hit for any power whatsoever yet. But given that defensive talent and the fact that he doesn't swing and miss, I want to see whether he can mature.

Ramirez
single and two walks tonight. .286/.444/.286 in two games.

Ramirez article
http://rangers.scout.com/2/662325.html

Here is an article from Lone Star Dugout about Ramirez. The article from the Indians site and appeared last season. Has some good info about his position change, his offensive approach and some info about his family back in Venezuala.
