Michael Young Frustration

The dude is driving me nuts.  He hasn't had an extra base hit since June 15th.  That is 15 games with only singles.  His power potential has completely vanished.  It seems as though he is always behind in the count and thus his hits are on defensive swings which, at best, result in singles to right field.  He has only had a 2-0 count 34 times this season and he has worked the count to 3-0 only 14 times. He is seeing the fewest pitches per PA for his entire career (3.5).  I know that he has been hitting for better average, but it doesn't seem to be producing much.  He seems like a guy that would bat 7th on a good team, not 3rd.

In his defense
who is protecting him in the line-up?  Sure as heck isn't anybody to make the other team nervous.

I did notice
that he grounded a 2 strike pitch on the outside corner to Lugo last night and that is NOT vintage MY.  When I saw that I knew he isn't the same as he has been the last couple years.  He may be feeling the pressure.

Yup
He has fallen in love with the ground out to SS.  He is hitting way more ground balls than at any other time in his career.  His 2007 G/F ratio this year is 1.82, compare that to his career year in 2004 when his G/F ratio was 0.97.  It is tough to hit doubles when the ball hits the ground 3 feet in front of the plate.
Mark Connor just shows up to the ballpark to collect a paycheck.

It has been hard to watch
I just hope we can chalk it up to no protection in the line-up.

Maybe could use Botts
Slide MY back to 2nd in the order and Botts in the third spot. OK power, good plate discipline to get MY to second.
Well Mr. Burns had done it. The power plant had won it. With Roger Clemens clucking all the while.

great...........
So the $80 million dollar man not only plays the wrong position on defense, he bats in the wrong spot in the lineup.

Maybe he should just be limited to appearing on billboards and commercials.  After all, he is the "face of the franchise".

Funny how often that was mentioned after his signing, as opposed to mentioning his production and defensive skills.

I stand corrected

I don't care
how good the player is they need protection in the line-up.  Look at Pujols this year.

well.....................
Its seems Michael's worst part of the season was when he had Tex backing him in the lineup.

He has heated up tremendously since he got Sosa behind him.

Therefore Sosa > Tex

drip, drip, drip

I stand corrected

So MY has been awesome for several
years in a row now and you aren't going to give him any kind of a reprieve for getting hit in the head during spring training and messing him up for a month and a hlf into the season?

RKH,
I don't mean to bash you or anyone, but I am getting tired of a lot of people degrading anything about the Rangers and the players.  My goodness it's like some people won't be happy unless 1-9 everyone has a high EqA and all the pitchers are pitching with ace like numbers.

I'm fine with...
players with low EQA's so as long as there's no one else available that's better than them and aren't making 16M a year.

If you're happy with Young's production, thats fine.  But right now, he's not earning his paycheck... and probably never will.

He won't have
The same kind of plate and strike zone coverage that he had in 04-05 until he gets out of the furthest back part of the box.  Maybe there's a reason he's back there, but I can't surmise why.
Time does funny things. The worst of which is, it keeps moving when you don't.

Technically Young isn't
making 16 million this year.

by OKC Ranger Fan on Jul 3, 2007 1:59 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yep... At $3,575,000 this year...
...and without looking it up, he's probably outperforming other players making similar coin...

OK that's true...
So hopefully, he'll hit like he did in 2005 once he starts making around 16M...

by chase1971 on Jul 3, 2007 3:13 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

is 2005
the only year that he's had that its acceptable to pay him 16M?  Or was 2005 even enough of an offensive output?
Forget Johnny Bench, we got Gerry "the Jet" Laird

A. 900 OPS shortstop...
is pretty valuable...  I don't know if its worth 16M, but I wouldn't feel too bad about it.

Of course a .750 OPS shortstop for 16M is a pretty terrible deal.

Right now, all I hope from Young is he stay completely healthy throughout the deal and put up around an .800 OPS... I think thats about the highest we can expect from him...

seems kinda silly
to expect us not to criticize individuals on the team that is 16.5 games out of first place before the all-star break, right?

I understand that you don't like to hear constant negativity, but when the team is barely winning at a .400 clip, its difficult to find reasonable positive things to discuss.

Pujols
He had the same guys batting behind him last year that he has batting behind him this year, right?
