The Deal Is Done -- Teixeira to the Braves

Ken Rosenthal reports the Deal is Done:

The Braves are on the verge of acquiring Rangers first baseman Mark Teixeira.

The deal is done, pending a review of the medical records of the players involved, according to major-league sources.

The Braves will receive Teixeira and left-handed reliever Ron Mahay.

The Rangers will receive catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia, Class A shortstop Elvis Andrus and two pitching prospects.

Have to see who the pitching prospects are, but assuming they are decent, I'm on board with this trade.

Update [2007-7-30 11:58:22 by Adam J. Morris]: -- Rosenthal now says that Matt Harrison is one of the prospects the Rangers will be getting -- apparently, he had an MRI on his shoulder that came back clean.

Update [2007-7-30 12:4:55 by Adam J. Morris]: -- ESPN is also saying that a deal is done.

Update [2007-7-30 12:29:20 by Adam J. Morris]: -- The S-T says a deal is done, and that one of the pitching prospects is 19 year old Nestali Feliz. That's a very good thing. 6'3", 180, righthanded, throws very hard, and was ranked #13 in the system by John Sickels coming into 2007.

Update [2007-7-30 13:12:58 by Adam J. Morris]: -- Evan Grant says that the pitchers are Harrison and either Feliz or Tommy Hanson. Grant also says Saltalamacchia is expected to play first base the rest of the way.

Update [2007-7-30 13:28:48 by Adam J. Morris]: -- Grant is now reporting that it is Saltalamacchia, Andrus, Feliz, and a PTBNL.

UPDATE -- T.R. Sullivan (who should, of course, be in a position to know) reports that it is Saltalamacchia, Andrus, Feliz (although he calls him Perez), and a PTBNL, who apparently would be Harrison if the Rangers' medical people clear his shoulder.

You all must be so happy
You've gotten rid of another Ranger. You must be giddy with joy.

Who will be in your sights next? Blalock, obviously. You already hsate him, just as I predicted years ago.

Who else? Anybody else that plays well and came up with the team.

Sharky...
I thought you were the one who didn't watch the games.

Teixeira is a bum.  He hasn't wanted to play in Texas for the last two years.  This is the first time that we traded away one of our home grown players that I was actually happy to see the guy go.    I'm giddy that we were able to get a very solid return for him.  The ideal Dodgers deal may have been better, but I am not really sure it was available.

This makes the Rangers better in the long term, though yes, it probably knocks us from a 75 win team to a 70 win team right now.

seems reasonable
Hopefully the two pitchers are at least B grade prospects.  Could end up seeing one being a ptbnl and wait to see what the injury to Harrison is.

by JKolar on Jul 30, 2007 10:16 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Awesome
Hopefully the second pitching prospect is Neftali Feliz, though that's pure dreaming on my part.

I'm glad we got Salty... Assuming we use him at catcher the majority of the time, I think this is a great deal. (Depending on the pitchers, obviously.)

Laird's numbers
this year haven't exactly inspired devotion.  Before this trade I'd say keep him around.  Now, with Saltalamacchia on board I'd move him if you can get something good.  But I might wait for the winter and see if he his bat picks up to raise his value unless the Cubs offer something enticing.

interesting
wait for his bat to pick up?  because we're all going to pray really hard?  I don't see why you would hold out for his bat to pick up.  I guess the idea is he can't be any worse offensively than he already is but I think the best you can do is the Cubs who want something a bit more than AAAA.  That team will be able to sign someone better in the offseason.

Its a debate I guess
Maybe I was too quick with that annointment.  But I really think Tex is a superstar and future HOFer and Palmeiro will end up a tad less than that, although I think he would have made the Hall without the steroid cloud.

I think Teixeira was
an extremely good player who we will not likely be able to replace soon, but I don't think he'll ever be at that elite HoF level.  He's 27, and he hasn't had the monster season.

It still may be yet to come, but I really don't think his peak will even be as high as Raffy's.  One of the reasons I wanted to trade him, is that I felt he was looking for a "Best player in the game" type contract, and realistically I doubt he will ever be that big of a monster.

I think when all is said and done, he will have a sub-HoF career, and he and Boras will be looking for a HoF type contract.  I just see him in the next tier down from HoF, the extremely good players.

He easily was the best Ranger while here, but just not worth what he and Boras will be looking for.

by DJCahill on Jul 30, 2007 10:31 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

well you're right
he will be looking for HOF contract.

and you're right that he hasn't had the monster season yet, but for some reason I still think it's inevitable that he'll rattle off 4 or 5 MVP caliber seasons in a row now.  maybe I'm just being optimistic

Forget Johnny Bench, we got Gerry "the Jet" Laird

by ab03 on Jul 30, 2007 10:33 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

You might be right
however, he is near peak age, and it would have to happen soon.  So far, he has rarely been a top 5 1B, let alone a Hall of Famer.

I think he will sign one of those big time contracts that the team that signs comes to regret, like Giambi.

by DJCahill on Jul 30, 2007 10:37 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

true
That's probably a fair analysis. I'm still bummed about this trade though. I have a feeling the Rangers won't see a player as good as Teixeira in quite some time.

by rkh on Jul 30, 2007 10:36 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

He will be HOF
because his numbers will probably put him second to Mickey Mantle in the category of switch hitters, no lower than right behind Eddie Murray.  He may not hit 600 home runs, but I don't see anyone challenging him as the best defensive 1b and he is always going to be in the top 10 in hitting.  Now that he is not a Ranger the media is going to be covering his every move and praising his every success.  The big contract with a big market media favorite will make him an All Star every year.  If he signs as a Yankee he is an All Star every year his name is on the ballot.  I have personally watched a Yankee fan fill out a straight Yankee ballot at TBiA.  So he may not end up being a HOF caliber player, but he will be a HOFer.

I've seen...
...Ranger fans fill out an all Ranger AS ballot.

I don't think that he's suddenly going to be hyped because he's not a Ranger.

And I don't think he's likely to end up as a HOFer.

Maybe
you missed this the first time I said it, but I said, " The big contract with a big market media favorite will make him an All Star every year.  If he signs as a Yankee he is an All Star every year his name is on the ballot."  I think there is an equal chance of him resigning in the National League as there is of him resigning in Texas.  He will not be competing with Albert for All Star games after 2008.

Best defensive 1B
is almost as worthwhile as tallest horse jockey.

1B is a position that is graded mostly by the ability to hit, and for all of Teixeira's talent, I don't think he ever cracked the top 3 1B in VoRP or RAP or any other rating.

Without TBiA propping up his numbers, I just don't see the Hall for him.

It's very suprising
the number of people that seemed to have turned on Tex leading up to the trade.  I guess there's something natural about hating a guy right before you trade him.

Anyway, I was annoyed with his comments and I'm pretty sure he didn't really need to say any of them but I'm definitely upset that we couldn't make it work with Tex.  this opportunity was just too good to pass up

I liked
his play on the field, less his streakiness and poor starts.  But I haven't liked him personality wise from day one.  He has no sense of humor in interviews.  I think he is a great talent and I loved him on the Rangers, but we aren't contending this year or next and we aren't going to be able to resign him.  This package from atlanta is better than the 2 draft picks we would have in '09.  That is why you make the deal.

Sharky
is a very sad panda. You'd think somebody shot his dog or something.

Teixeira is a great player, and he'll probably continue to be a great player. That said, based on the situation that the Rangers are in, this is a fine, if not necessary, move.

However, you have to feel bad for Sharky. Considering he hasn't watched a game all year (by his own admission), he is going to find it much more difficult to bullshit about the Rangers now that one of the more recognizable/SportsCenter-worthy players are gone.

And without that Rangers bullshitting, his real reason for being here-- spreading the conservative Gospel, including but not limited to the nonexistence of global warming and the necessity of the War in Iraq-- will become much more evident.

Truly, a sad day for Sharky. My thoughts and prayers go out to the entire Sharky family.

I know he is just trolling
But for some reason I still feel the need to answer his comments.

Of cousre this is bigger than any game this year for the rangers, simply because our games dont mean anything anymore.

This is one of the biggest trades in rangers history, our best player who WAS NOT going to re-sign with us. This trade has a big big hand in if we turn the corner, or are set back a few more years. JD's career could be on the line as well.

But in the end I know you probably just know all this and are just trolling to get responses, but seriously, your such a dumbass, I just emailed that guy that burnt down the kids house for calling him a nerd over the internet. He has seen your posts, and will operate for free.

Talking about HOF regarding him already?

LMAO, I have never seen consistency with him...

He looks great sometimes, and less than good 60 percent of the other time...

Maybe you can blame that on people hitting after him, I don't know...

Why today and not tomorrow?
JD must have decided that he absolutely wasn't getting more from any other team,  otherwise why not take it down to the wire?

And, maybe he needs the time to flip Laird?

And then there's Gagne and maybe one or two others that will take time and so he decided to go ahead with Tex.

After Harrison and the already mentioned Harrison, would Jo Jo be their next best pitching prospect?

by reikol on Jul 30, 2007 10:59 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Salty
I hope to god that, once he's in Texas, people refrain from calling him 'Salty'.

Super-gay nickname.

Just call him Saltalamacchia. You can even add your own Italian accent.

Try it...it's fun. Makes you feel 'cultured'.

by tlt29 on Jul 30, 2007 10:59 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

LOL
Yeah, the first time I heard his name, that's what I did, though my attempt at an Italian accent was pretty bad- think the Italian chef on the Simpsons.

Maybe, since Saltalamacchia is an Italian name, we can come up with a Sopranos-style nickname for him. Something like "Salty Walnuts."

feliz
Per Rotoworld,

Neftali Feliz threw five scoreless innings Saturday and has a 0.82 ERA in 11 innings for Rookie Danville.
The 19-year-old Feliz might have the most upside of any Braves pitching prospect. The team has been very careful with him, so he's yet to get a trial at full-season ball since signing out of the Dominican Republic in 2005. That will probably happen next year.

http://www.rotoworld.com/content/playerpages/player_main.aspx?sport=MLB&id=4967

Sounds good and he's only 19

Just got here
I had a feeling this was gonna go down today.  I still think a potential Dodgers deal would've been better, but I don't know that one was offered.  Still, if the prospects are Harrison and Feliz, or even Feliz and Hanson, then I think this is a really good deal.

Now here's hoping we can swing Laird+reliever to the Cubs for Pie.

Sayonara, Tex - it was nice having you.  And I don't think he's a HOFer, either.
