That's better

Ok to quickly sum up
1) Gabbard's major league success has all the makings of a fluke performance. The H/9 is a full two hits worse than his #s in the minor leagues, his 3 BB/9 is actually an improvement from his minor league numbers.
For reference, Robinson Tejeda's BB/9 in the upper minors is actually lower than Kason Gabbard's. Now does that mean it can't be a Chris Young situation where a slight adjustment led to amazing effectiveness? Of course not, but is it very likely? I wouldn't hold my breath.
2) Engel Beltre is not the centerpiece of this deal, and if he was, JD has no business making trades.
Engel Beltre is young, I get that, and he's young for his league. But here's the thing, toolsy guys in the low-low minors are never the center piece for any deal. Elvis Andrus was not the centerpice for the Teixeira deal, Joaquin Arias wasn't why we traded for A-Rod, and Danks didn't go to the White Sox for David Paisano. Engel Beltre is a good third player, he might even be the best player we get from that deal, but he's not a centerpiece, by any means.
- The guy I probably like the most is David Murphy. Yeah, he's not going to hit above .280, but he draws walks, and our park will help inflate those power #s a bit, and he's a good defense CF. He's a similar player, I think, to Nelson Cruz, with less upside and more polish. If all things fall right, he's a good #9 hitter and a guy that won't kill you if he starts in CF. That's a good #4 guy in a block buster, not a key piece of a deal for the best reliever avaliable.
- Finally, please, do not only think about Gagne as a two month rental, ask yourself if the package we got from the Red Sox was more valuable than a twosome like Michael Main and Julio Borbon. Which would have more value from a players development standpoint, which would be more attractive as trade bait?
draft picks
I'm with you in that I don't like the trade either but you can't have it both ways
Beltre
That's not good, a draft pick that performs well in low A or such can get you considerably more in a trade.
not always
and David Murphy is about what a supplemental could hope to turn into.
couldn't agree more
Also, FirebatM3, did you understand the perception that we HAD to trade Gagne? I certainly don't. Just because we are building for 2012 does not mean that we have to trade people for the sake of trading people.
Like you said, I'll take draft picks if we can't get value for one of the top closers in the game. He is only 31 folks, wanted to resign here, and could have remained valuable as a trade commodity if we, still, were not contenders in a couple of years -- I say more valuable just because of the chance to disprove the injury concerns and a healthy season or two of the real Eric Gagne would shoot his stock up.
I'm not saying fire JD or anything, because I gave him an A- for the Teix trade, but the Gagne trade is a D for me until Murphy or Beltre contribute to the big club either as trade pieces or players.

Gagne
And yeah, overall, JD did a good job this deadline. Got a fantastic package for Tex, who had to be traded. Held onto Benoit so that he can hopefully build up his value as an eight inning setup guy, and got tremendous return for Lofton.
Gagne doesn't break this deadline, but even if he got someone like Michael Bowden rather than Gabbard, I'd be a lot happier than I am now.
