Bob and Dan are idiots

Ok, I don't really think they are idiots, but I knew that would get attention. While I don't think they are idiots they are wrong on both points they tried to make today. (For those not familiar Bob and Dan are the afternoon 12-3 hosts on Sportsradio 1310 The Ticket)

First, Dan said Grieve was being ridiculous Ranger announcer when he said something along the lines of Guthrie, Bedard and Cabrera were a very tough to hit threesome and that he couldn't think of a team with a tougher three to hit. Ummm, Dan, take a look at the numbers. There are only 7 teams with 3 pitchers ranked in the top 50 in MLB in batting average against. Below are those teams with the three pitchers and their rank. Only the Cubs have 3 pitchers with a current better average ranking... Again, this is not ERA, it is batting average against which is what Grieve was referring to (when he said hardest to HIT). Admittedly, Oakland is right there close also, but I do not think Tom Grieve's statement was a stretch.
CHC    Rich Hill    11
    Jason Marquis    13
    Ted Lilly    14
BAL    Jeremy Guthrie    4
    Erik Bedard    9
    Daniel Cabrera    35
OAK    Dan Haren    2
    Joe Blanton    21
    Chad Gaudin    31
NYM    Oliver Pérez    3
    John Maine    7
    Tom Glavine    50
CWS    Javier Vázquez    12
    Mark Buehrle    30
    Jon Garland    39
BOS    Josh Beckett    23

    Tim Wakefield    36

Next, Bob tried to make the point that perhaps the Rangers have been buying into Ron Washington's patience at the plate theory since Mark Teixeira has been out. Since Tex had the fight with Wash about being patient early in the season, his theory was that players were getting in line behind Tex, but with Tex out of the lineup they are now getting in line behind Wash. Now there are lots of ways to measure this, but the simplest is number of pitches per plate appearance. Oakland, Boston and the Yankees are continuously at the top in this category which reflects what we believe to be their batters ability to work pitchers. Teixeira has been out 30 days, so it works out to use stats from the last 30 days (courtesy MLB.com). In that stretch, the Rangers are averaging 3.83 P/PA. Prior to that, with Tex in the lineup, the Rangers were averaging 3.87 P/PA. They ranked 5th in the AL on both counts. Bottom line is that there is no evidence in the NP/PA numbers to suggest that the Ranger have been any more patient with Tex out of the lineup than with Tex in the lineup (if anything, they have seen fewer pitches in his absence). YTD Boston, Cleveland, Oakland and NYY are the top four teams with Texas ranking 5th in NP/PA.

Don't listen
to Bob and Dan for intelligent baseball points.  It'll never happen.  Listen for schtic only.

I thought that was what the Hardline was for?
Norm = Relevant sports
BaD Radio = Soccer talk and Ghetto Jeopardy
Hardline = see above

You forgot
The Musers - Gordo Schtick, Junior's Spurs talk, and the chance you might hear JubJub's CowHeart explode on the air.

I think it's more like
D&M = confusing, uncomfortable shtick
Norm = screaming sports points
BaD radio = minority and gay shtick
Hardline = potty humor and chick shtick

No, He didn't.
If I'm recalling the whole debate correctly, it was centric on what echelon of players Tex was in. When I turned off the radio and finished my book, I believe they placed Tex in a category below guys like Pujols and Vlad, but above a player like Michael Cuddyer. Bob, in the process of all this, asked dan if he thought Michael Cuddyer was a 'good player'. He wasn't saying that Cuddyer was comparable to Tex; and in fact they specifically said that he was closer to the Vlad tier than the Cuddyer level.

I am convinced
that Bob Sturm simply likes to hear himself talk.  He added nothing of value last night on Doocey's show, for those of you that happen to catch that.

Pitches seen
Wash's point was about when to really bear down and work counts.. late in games when behind.  You'd have to get a more specific stat to back up your argument.

When watching the games, it does seem like they are more patient late in games, taking walks and frustrating bullpens.

I might spend more time on this
but I think the fact that the teams we always associate with being good at working pitchers are at the top of NP/PA lends a lot of credence to the number. I honestly doubt that I will find a significant difference in the Rangers numbers if I do drill down to close and late situations.

By the way, I think it is worth noting that they are pretty good at working pitchers either way (5th in NP/PA). I think most people perceive them to be a free swinging club, but the numbers seem to say they are better than average at patience.

With the line-up we've been running out there.....
(no complaints as far as W/L), I'm guessing opposing pitcher's are a little more inclined to go at guys.....just a hunch.

The Ticket may not be perfection
But when the alternative is 103.3... It's a foregone conclusion for me.
And while I can't say I enjoy Dan and Donovan's petty squabbles, nor the endless, wearisome Tom Gribble laugh songs, I far prefer them to Dan Patrick-or whoever ESPN may have hired to replace him.

completely agree..
to be honest one reason i listen to the ticket is because they don't talk SPORTS all the time. 103.3 is a beating, mike and mike, the little girl who screams alot, and drunkard galloway.... i like the ticket because they talk about sports and tv and local stuff and whatever else they can think of. anyways that's my 2 cents. baby arm bloody pants.

They are much better than the competition
while the ESPN guys probably have more accurate content b/c of all of the guests that are at their disposal, but the Ticket is far more entertaining.

Sports Radio
I'd rather just listen to my CDs.

by t ball on Jul 9, 2007 4:46 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree
the ticket is still genius.  BaD radio, however, is definately the weakest link.

BaD Radio
Actually, I like Bob and Dan the best, but they have really missed the mark on some baseball segments this year. The Hardline used to be decent at discussing baseball, but they really are worse than BaD Radio these days (especially Greggo). I think the Musers rehash what other shows have said and/or otherwise ignore baseball. Norm generally has the best thought out points, but is still hard to listen to.

by Brandon Wilson on Jul 9, 2007 2:04 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Check out the big brain on BaD
No way, BaD radio is the greatest show on the ticket--minus the terrible decision of bringing the worthless Donovan on there.
Any show with Greggo the Idiot is way worse than BaD radio. Next time you listen to the Hardline, notice something: everything that comes out of Greggo's mouth is 100%, completely, WRONG.

I'd put BaD radio on the top
followed closely by the Hardline with the Musers a distant third and Norm as even more distant fourth.  None of them follow the Rangers as close as most of us do but even when they are way off it's still entertaining, which is all I'm looking for to get me through the day.

Tex and plate patience
What I didn't understand was the idea that Bob & Dan seemed to put forth- basically, that Tex doesn't take pitches.

Despite being out the last month, Tex is tied with Lofton for the team lead in walks, with 37. Maybe it's just me, but is that the mark of a free swinger? I don't think so.

I normally like Bob's take on the Rangers (not so much Dan's) but they both missed the boat pretty badly today.

Their bit
Is to completely rip Tom Hicks to shreds whenever possible. I like Bob a lot in general, but he doesn't have a lot as far as baseball's concerned. Dan just has a bag in general.
I know, we all rip Hicks. But these guys go completely overboard with it.

The Ticket
I listen to The Ticket off-and-on all day when I'm in the car or in front of the computer. I take it as entertainment/sitting-at-the-bar guytalk/BS with sports as the background. I think that the common fan's opinion (not as baseball-knowledgable as here, but still valid) is expressed there. It is what it is...and it beats many lame alternatives.
Hit me in the eye...maybe I can see better.

the toughest
the toughest pitcher to hit in the history of baseball (going off this stat)...

Nolan Ryan

Ryan
given that he has 7 no-hitters, doesn't that make sense?

Agree
if you're arguement is hardest to hit -- the guy w/ the most no hitters by far is a pretty good place to start.
