OT: Steven Gerrard

Very excited that the EPL season has started again, so I get to watch more of the most exciting professional athlete on the planet. Here a video of his free kick to win the match against Aston Villa on Saturday.

That kick was amazing...
especially since it was right after the PK equalizer.
Obviously you're not a golfer.

yeah
He's a game changer, that guy.
But that river of tears has dried for all of us.

Amazing
I wish we had an owner who would resign our game changers at any price no matter what.

i do love the King of all Scousers though.

Free Kick
That had to be one of the most amazing free kicks ever, especially from a player not named David Beckham (5 years ago).  I guess when im on the subject of David Beckham, I dont think that soccer will ever be a huge attraction in the United States unless the USA produces top quality players with Superstar power or the decide to bring the real big guns to the USA like Ronaldinho, Henry, Deco, or shevchenko
baseBALLIN!

Beckham
I talked to a friend who saw him play at RFK last week and she said that it was clear that he was easily the best player on the field. Pretty impressive considering his ankle is hurt. I think it's going to be good for the game over here that MLS has brought him over.

I'd put Gerrard's free kick up there with this one in terms of the best I've seen:

Nakamura
Other than Beckham, I'm not sure there's a better free-kick specialist anywhere in the world.

I'm really surprised one of the big English, Spanish, or Italian clubs hasn't snatched him up-not that Celtic is a small club, mind you.

He's great. One of those players who I really enjoy watching.

Gerrard
I was at Trinity Hall at Mockingbird Station on Saturday, watching the Liverpool game with about 35 fellow Reds fans. That place ERUPTED when Gerrard hit that kick- high-fives all around, and we all started singing the Steven Gerrard song:

(to the tune of "Que Sera, Sera")

"Steven Gerrard, Gerrard
He kicks the ball 40 yards
He's big and he's f**kin' hard
Steven Gerrard, Gerrard"

Good times.

"Then I met some friends for a beer, went to a BoDeans's concert, and son of a vondruke, if I didn't leave him at the concert hall."

Roberto Carlos
Speaking of free kicks.  This HAS TO BE the best free kick! I also can't see the Gerrard one since they took it down on that website.

Great kick but it's not gonna matter
The top 4 teams in EPL this year (they'll be going to Europe) are:
  1. Man United
  2. Chelsea
3.Everton
4. Arsenal

by hinduplaya on Aug 13, 2007 1:21 PM CDT   0 recs

Naah
More like:
  1. Liverpool!
  2. Man United
  3. Chelsea
  4. Tottenham Hotspur
The Toffees will have to settle for another UEFA Cup berth...

I think
This is the year we see some other side break the Top 4 and I don't think that team will be Tottenham.  I wish my Rovers could do it but I just don't see how they can...

Maybe Newcastle or even Everton.  I think this year will be much more exciting regardless, especially now that ManU are without Rooney for a while now.

Yeah, well at least I'm housebroken.

by HypoLuxa on Aug 13, 2007 2:29 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Not a real big problem
when you have Tevez on the bench...

by Wes Cox on Aug 13, 2007 2:38 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Agreed
however depth will come into play as they really need all hands on deck in order to sustain the domestic league, and three different Cup runs. John O'Shea is not an acceptable replacement for Rooney, yet he will be called upon to shoulder some of the load now that Rooney's out.

In all actuality I think ManU will be in the Top 3, along with the Red Shite, and Chelsea.  Arse will finish 5th, then any combination of Totts, Rovers, newcastle and Everton(one of which will pip the 4th spot)

Yeah, well at least I'm housebroken.

by HypoLuxa on Aug 13, 2007 2:46 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Hypo
You're a Rovers fan?  I've supported Blackburn for like 8 or 9 years now.  Still never met another Blackburn fan in person though.

As for their chances, I think they'll finish #5 or 6 this year.  Especially if they'd at least start decent this year.  I really like the addition of Roque Santa Cruz.

by rangers85 on Aug 13, 2007 6:31 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Yeah
Been a Rovers fan for 13 years now.  Seen a Championship, a relegation, a promotion, a Worthington Cup and other assorted high's and low's.

Next time Rovers are on FSC we'll have to go hit up a pub and be the only two Rovers fans in DFW...

Yeah, well at least I'm housebroken.

by HypoLuxa on Aug 13, 2007 8:29 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Definitely...
They're actually on FSC on the 25th at 11am and Sept 1st at 1:30, but that Sept 1 game partially conflicts with the TCU/Baylor game that day.  Followed by another on Sept 15th 11am.  Definitely some opportunities.

by rangers85 on Aug 13, 2007 10:45 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I'm sorry
but that foul that led up to the kick was such a horrible call.  I'd expect to see that in the Argentine League not English Premier League.

Saying that, he did dispatch the kick with great aplomb.  I hate them so very much, but if Gerrard ever came to be a Rover I'd not say peep...

Yeah, well at least I'm housebroken.

by HypoLuxa on Aug 13, 2007 2:27 PM CDT   0 recs

Not bloody likely!
You'll never get your hands on our Stevie! :)

It's bad enough that our best player ever (Kenny Dalglish) managed the Rovers to an EPL title...

"Then I met some friends for a beer, went to a BoDeans's concert, and son of a vondruke, if I didn't leave him at the concert hall."

by RCCook on Aug 13, 2007 3:11 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Yeah
and Souness almost managed us to the drop.

I know the only kopite bastards we'll ever get are your cast-offs.  Which is fine since that has netted us Friedel, Warnock and a fair few others...

Yeah, well at least I'm housebroken.

by HypoLuxa on Aug 13, 2007 4:14 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Souness
One of our greatest players, but what a disaster as a manager. He only won one major trophy (the 1992 FA Cup) which came just weeks after he gave an interview to the Sun, which is one of the worst things a Liverpool player or coach can do, given the paper's actions after Hillsborough.

I do like Friedel, though, and felt bad that Warnock didn't make it at Liverpool, since he came up through our youth academy.

if you
really feel the need to watch the Red Shite, why not go when it's a derby match against Everton?

If you're going to watch le Arse, god help you.

And if CJ is a kopite, I'll have lost all hope for humankind...

Yeah, well at least I'm housebroken.

by HypoLuxa on Aug 13, 2007 4:12 PM CDT   0 recs

cool
One of the big perks of playing for Tom Hicks I guess. BTW, when I said that Steven Gerrard was the most exciting pro athlete, I meant no offense. You are a close second CJ.

Watching EPL in Fort Worth
Anyone know a good place on Saturdays to watch the games.  I've got FSC at my house, but it's just not the same as out watching it with other footy fans.  All I know is, it'll be tough to get up and watch the Blackburn game Sunday after having a bit of a house party Saturday night.

by rangers85 on Aug 13, 2007 6:44 PM CDT   0 recs

Rovers
How did you become a Blackburn fan?
But that river of tears has dried for all of us.

by trza on Aug 13, 2007 8:18 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Years ago...
in the 99/00 season I got my first copy of Championship Manager and wanted a team that wasn't in the premiership to lead up to glory.  I went with Blackburn since they were in the old league one at the time.  That's where it all started, even before Brad Friedel got there.

by rangers85 on Aug 13, 2007 10:40 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Friedel
A legend.

That's cool. I guess I need to pick a team. I love the EPL and love the English national team, but I've never settled on one club. I lived near White Hart Lane for a while, so I kinda like Spurs, I keep up with Fulham b/c of all the Yanks they field (McBride, Bocanegra, Dempsey), love watching Liverpool since Gerrard is my favorite player, enjoy watching Chelski b/c I'm a huge fan of John Terry.  Don't care for Man Utd, but really excited that two of my faves, Owen Hargreaves and Carlitos Tevez,  are playing with them now. Plus I lived in England when the Red Devils won the treble, so I have a soft spot in my heart for them in spite of myself. Arsenal plays the most attractive football in the Prem. I can find something to like about almost every team. Except Brm City. Man it would suck to be a supporter of that squad.

But that river of tears has dried for all of us.

Tevez?
He is way too ugly for me to enjoy watching him.

by zywica on Aug 13, 2007 11:48 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

tevez
He's a little bit troll-ish, but he plays with such intensity and heart. I love watching him play. Plus I think it's cool that he came from a humble background and has risen to such great heights.
But that river of tears has dried for all of us.

by trza on Aug 14, 2007 12:05 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Tevez is a stud
if you can get around his appearance, he's a joy to watch.  One of the only Argentines to play in Brazil and flourish, that I can remember.  You just don't do that kind of thing.

It's going to be interesting to see him play surrounded by a good squad.  He was lost at WHam.  He was the only one who wanted to play it seemed. Everyone else (Harewood, Reo-Coker, Zamora) was too busy crying for a bigger payday...

Although I still think that 5.5 mill fine for illegally signing Tevez and Mascherano was ludicrous.  And the fact that Liverpool and ManU can sign them after that is even more ludicrous.  Just shows that the FA has no cojones...

Yeah, well at least I'm housebroken.

CM HAHA!
pure greatness.  CM geeks.  I still think if you wanna learn strategy and the rules of footy if your american, CM (NOW FM) is about as in depth as you can get.

thats how i got into PL and footy.  now im a freak.

I still cant believe Hicks bought Liverpool, whats an Irish kid who follows PL supposed to do when his mediocre owner of the  perennial losing baseball team he follows buys his footy club?

.500 or bust!

by Jayslick on Aug 14, 2007 6:37 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Jay
As a fellow Reds & Rangers fan, I feel for you.

I already had 18 months as a Liverpool fan under my belt before Hicks bought them. I was pretty torn at first, but I figure Liverpool is such a storied club, there's no way Hicks can screw them up. Plus, he's only owns half the team.

1-0 win over Toulouse in the Champions League qualifier this morning. A draw or a win on the 29th, and we're in the group stage again, en route to #6!

"Then I met some friends for a beer, went to a BoDeans's concert, and son of a vondruke, if I didn't leave him at the concert hall."

Damn
That's awesome. When Sturm talked on the radio about going to Liverpool/ManU I was so jealous, and I'm an Arsenal fan.

by zywica on Aug 14, 2007 8:29 AM CDT   0 recs

FWIW
I'll be in England next month to watch my Rovers at Chelsea, and then my Rovers host Portsmouth.  I'll be in Liverpool mid-week so unless Blackburn has a mid-week game I'll be going to Goodison.  If there's not a mid-week game at Goodison I'll go to Anfield, buy a kit of whoever they're playing and be that team's biggest fan for the day.

Needless to say I cannot WAIT!

Yeah, well at least I'm housebroken.
