Over slot bonuses

As we get closer to the signing deadline, the over s lot bonuses are starting to get announced. The Braves announced that they signed first round pick Jason Heyward for $1.7 million, which is $170,000 over his slot as the 14th overall pick.

The Marlins also signed their second round pick, Mike Stanton, to about $57,000 over slot.

Baseball America has a free article out which explains that while GMs and Scouting Directors would like to see bonuses come down, they are not going to really adhere to the slotting system as long as other teams are ignoring it. Basically, they are not going to let the slotting system get in the way of adding a talented player to the system.

I still think we sign all our first rounders, but I doubt we sign Gast and I am about 99 percent sure we don't sign Nash. The players I would really like to get are the players like Anthony Ranaudo, who we took in round 11, and are raw but have a high ceiling. Signing him away from LSU is going to be hard, but it would be a nice pickup.

Teams that adhere to the slotting system
are teams with the same mindset as teams in the NFL and NBA who try to consistently stay under cap.

This sucks
Specifically the fact that the new signing deadline plus the fact that people are waiting to announce over slot deals (which will make agents wait even longer) is going to really hurt the short season leagues. Some of them were struggling already. I wonder if we won't see combo teams or some teams drop to one SS affiliate and just send whoever else doesn't make it in time to instructs?

yeah
so far im not a fan of these new draft rules. i kind of liked the draft and follow process, etc. and the hard deadline right now seems to be more of a negative than anything

The side of me
...that hates to have things just hanging out there unresolved likes that it settles things before the season ends and people start going to school.

It's the convergence of signings upon that deadline that stinks.

If this sticks
for several years and into the next CBA perhaps we'll see a new structure with expanded SS fall instructional leagues so that teams can get things going.

Or, barring that
a new sort of "draft and follow" where picks can play somewhere while waiting to sign and under 'control' of the team that picked them.

Porcello
It appears the Tigers have agreed to sign Porcello to a major league contract worth $7.7 million, which would be $700,000 more than the previous largest contract signed by a prep player, Josh Beckett in 1999. With this happening, it guarantees that we can pay our picks about whatever we want and not catch too much heat from Selig, since he will probably be saving up all his stern words and dirty looks for the Tigers.

Wow
that is a lot more than what was going around. F-ing Dombrowski, I love that guy.

Callis on our unsigned picks
This is an update from Jim Callis at BA and is about  another player, but it says at the end that Ramirez and Borbon are expected to sign. Nothing really new, but it is nice to hear it from someone other than Grant and TR.

Borbon
If he didn't sign, I doubt we'd end up regretting it...

drools for tools GMs
Yeah, I was just hoping for a do-over on that crapass pick.

A very fast trade would be a nice 2nd prize though, agreed.
