Rod Barajas
The boy lies in the grass with one blade
Stuck between his teeth
A vague sensation quickens
In his young and restless heart
And a bright and nameless vision
Has him longing to pop up

Rush?
Was that just a Rush reference?  Jeez, if it was, there is no reason I should know that.  I'm going to go sit quietly in the corner for a while.

Pitch count
Hurley has throw 74 pitches (48 strikes) threw six innings. He should be back out for the seventh.

Clinton pregame radio show
They interviewed Danny Clark the pitching coach ...

Beau Jones

  • starter last year, bullpen this year in the Atlanta org
  • the Rangers want to see how he is as a starter
  • his last start was good - relied on his FB, threw 64 FB's
Evan Reed
  • Reed's due in tonight
  • Clark heard that Reed hits 93/94 - has a heavy FB - big durable guy
  •  going into the rotation to see if he could be a quality 3rd or 4th starter in the playoffs
Clinton's playoff rotation - Phillips, Kiker, then whoever is going good at the end of the season

Clark thinks Poveda and Ballard will both be major leaguers someday
- don't sleep on Ballard, he's a battler sez Clark

Clark mentioned Brennan Garr, too - said a new stance [?] on the mound [wider base?] has been good for him
- I got a little distracted but it sounded like he said Garr was heading for Frisco?  Or has already been promoted to Frisco?
I mighta heard wrong - we'll see about all that on Garr

by shroomer on Aug 16, 2007 8:36 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Garr
In order for Garr to continue to develop, he is going to have to be challenged. Obviously Low A wasn't any sort of a challenge and High A hasn't been either. Might as well promote him to Frisco and see if Double A hitters have a chance against him. While the Frisco bullpen is solid, there aren't a lot of prospects in it besides Kometani and Ingram who are fringe prospects. It would be nice to have our top reliever prospect pitching for the RoughRiders in the playoffs.

by uthornfan on Aug 16, 2007 8:40 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Danny Ray Herrera
as far as pen prospects goes, isn't this guy one of the safer ones we have?

by FirebatM3 on Aug 16, 2007 8:43 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yes
in the same way that Scott Feldman was a safe relief prospect.

by Brett Perryman on Aug 16, 2007 8:52 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yep
He could probably pitch as a lefty specialist in the big leagues right now. I forgot about him when I mentioned Kometani and Ingram. Herrera is going to have to prove himself at each level, but it would not shock me if he pitched in the big leagues for 15+ years as a lefty reliever. He throws three pitches, a 83 mph fastball, a 73 mph curveball and a 63 mph changeup that looks like a screwball. All of his pitches move, so as long as he has good command he will get hitters out.

by uthornfan on Aug 16, 2007 8:54 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Forgot something
I forgot the second part. It would also not shock me if he was easily figured out by major league hitters and never did anything in the show. I don't want to believe he will succeed until I see it, because there are no 5-5 pitchers in the big leagues and that is about how tall he really is.

Erasmo Ramirez, sweet.

by hillcrest on Aug 17, 2007 9:09 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Herrera
The guy throws like 84 MPH.  I don't know what kind of safe bet he is.  He better have devistating off spead stuff if he's going to get good LHH's out in the big leagues.

He's a nice story definately and I'm rooting for him, but I don't know if I would call him a safe bet to pitch in the big leagues.

Great Job
From the big fella.  Looked damn good tonight.

Probably would have gotten out of that inning without giving up that run had he got that strike call earlier in the at bat against Bozied.

Either way, Great job tonight Hurley!

2 infield singles..... the second one they showed the replay that he was out in fact....

Either way, 2 infield singles and a double.  I'll take that line anyday.

Soccer game broke out ...
... the Quakes are kickin' the ball all over the field.  Ballard is gonna get cold - no way he can keep it goin' ... but he's a battler so anything is possible.  Blaze are still at bat - 2 outs though - batted around.

Ramirez
Deliberately picked off second for the third out to make sure Ballard didn't ice up.  What a team player.

Maybe a reach on O'Campo and Ramirez, but it would be nice.

Spokane
I will be interested to see how they handle that rotation next year.  It looks like they have about 8 candidates for that rotation without the guys from next year's draft.

by badradiorules on Aug 16, 2007 10:33 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Low level rotos
I could see at Bakersfield:
Omar Poveda
Zach Phillips
Kasey Kiker
Beau Jones*
Evan Reed

At Clinton, maybe:
Fabio Castillo
Tommy Hunter
Jake Brigham
Neftali Feliz
Michael Main

With these guys also around:
Blake Beavan
Wilmer Font
Carlos Pimentel
Neil Ramirez
Gueris Grullon*
Ben Henry
Kyle O'Campo
Wilfredo Boscan

Beavan, Font and Pimentel seem like candidates to be in Clinton at some point, to me. But yeah, pretty big logjam, and that doesn't even include college pitchers they might draft next summer.

Andrus
1B and BB tonight

Really solid #s at this point for Bakersfield. I guess that wasn't all that hard to predict.

by Brett Perryman on Aug 17, 2007 12:03 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

If the #'s continue in HA, ceteris paribus, ...
would it be imprudent to have him start off next year in Frisco? Granted, he turns 19 in a couple weeks, and it is rare for someone his age to be in AA, but that would set him up for 20 y/o in AAA, with a shot at the big club in 2010 as a 21 year old.
"Really we should put Benoit in the rotation, he'd be Johann [sic] Santana but for 30 million less." - Sharky, Aug. 8 2007

by Chase Irwin on Aug 17, 2007 12:26 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

winter ball?
If he plays in a competitive winter league maybe that helps make the decision.  Otherwise, I'd be inclined to start him at Bakersfield to get to know him a bit more before sending him to Frisco.  Right now Meyer and Benjamin are above him.  Is there any reason to keep Meyer around?  Arias needs to play somewhere, though, as he recovers from a lost year and tries to reestablish himself.  That might keep Andrus in High-A initially.

Arias
what happened to Arias in CF?

by Brandon Wilson on Aug 17, 2007 9:45 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Bah
That's a desperation move designed to make other teams think he has more utility or find a place for him on the Ranger team.  It is no longer necessary given the acquisition of Murphy, the emergence of Byrd and Boggs as at least 4th outfielders, and now having Beltre and Borbon on board.
