International signings
I know there has been some talk wondering if we signed any players from Latin America, and while I didn't find a complete list, I did find out a few things. Baseball America has a new feature on international signings. The Rangers are mentioned briefly. Apparently we signed four players, two shortstops, a lefty pitcher and an outfielder. More on them in a second.
There is also another feature on the top 20 signing bonuses given out during this signing period, and the Rangers have two of the players in the top 20. We signed two 16 year olds, a LHP named Martin Perez from Venezuela and Wilson Suero, a SS from the Dominican Republic. They seem to be the two most highly regarded players we signed.
We also signed Venezuelan SS Tomas Telis and Venezuelan outfielder Edward Ceballo. I have no ages on these two players. If anyone finds out about these players or any other players we signed, please post the info here.
Here is what BA had to say about Martin Perez.
"The Rangers also made big moves again this season, signing Venezuelan lefthander Martin Perez (BA initially reported Perez had signed with the Mets) for $580,000, Dominican shortstop Wilson Suero ($558,000), Venezuelan shortstop Tomas Telis ($140,000) and Venezuelan outfielder Edward Ceballo ($105,00). Considered the top lefthander on the international market this year, Perez has drawn mixed reviews, with some scouts saying his fastball was 89-90 mph with a solid-average curveball and others saying he was 82-86 with a 62 mph curve.

Supposedly he's represented by Boras
Hopefully we're one of those 2 or 3 teams.

Cool I want him
at least then we dont have to trade gagne again next year for him heh.
i always want the ranger to step up and go after the latin guys hard core. we always seem to sit out of only go to about 1M then we're out. its like a free draft. its like what the states used to be in the old days before the draft.
pony up in latin america.
pony up and draft the procello's, harvey, weavers, through the 1st 10 rounds.
stir in 5 seasons of consistently doing this.
cook at 104 degrees in DFW
Blam!
good things will happen.
i guarantee it.

Yah
Haven't the Mariners traditionally been pretty big spender on the international scene, though?
And they have had pretty big payrolls the last couple of years.
I could see us being named as a midmarket team in this instance. I think it's much more likely that he goes to the Mets/Yankees, but still...

look at 2003 - 65 games, .370 avg, 8 HR, 36:43 bb/k, 17 2b and he was 23.

Snelling
He and Rocco Baldelli need to have some special award named after them.
