ChiSox extend Jermaine Dye

Jermaine Dye is not going to be a free agent at the end of the season after all.

The ChiSox and Dye have apparently agreed to a 2 year, $22 million contract extension.

That makes me happy.  There has been too much talk about the Rangers wanting to pursue him after the season, which I think would have been a mistake.

The only free agent corner outfielder I'm interested in this offseason is Fukudome.  The rest, I'd pass on...

Bidding for Fuki
might get funky.  There seems to be quite a bit of talk about him already, he might get more than Dye.

I'd be willing...
...to pay more for him than Dye...

I would, too,
but I'd want to be sure he's healthy first.  If he comes here and gets on base like he has over there he'd add a nice bat to this lineup.

Fukudome Injury
Kosuke Fukudome, considered a likely candidate to play in MLB next season, will have surgery in the United States this month to remove bone fragments from his right elbow.
Fukudome has been out since late July and will miss the rest of the season, but he should be fine in a couple of months.

The surgery shouldn't have any impact on his value as a free agent this winter. Fukudome was hitting .294/.443/.520 with 13 homers in 269 at-bats before going down.

How old is Fukodome?
I will not get my comeuppance!

30, I think
still should have a few good years in him.  I've seen the number $12-15 mil per year tossed out there for him, and I think he'll probably be worth it.

Sorry
didn't mean to imply that he would be posted.  He is strictly a free agent.

Concerned
Kinda played out, I guess, but...

All these players coming off the "possible" list is scary (Wells, Dye, and to lesser degree Zam and Byrnes). Lots of folks say don't go for Hunter and AJM is happy Dye is gone (AJM: you wouldn't have liked a 2 year $27M deal with Dye?). There is a lot of money to spend in the budget with Teix gone, etc. Who the heck is gonna be there to spend it on?

I understand not spending just to spend. But, this team needs major work, especially offensively. And a 2-year deal with Dye or a 3-year deal with Byrnes would have made this team better in my opinion and kept the payroll still very low. And maybe have created a buzz to make others consider Texas. (Granted, I realize the chance to ink those deals never came, but I am not in the camp of being happy the chance never arose).

If they don't spend some money to get players here, 2008 is not gonna be pretty. And to think that 2008 being ugly doesn't affect the chances of being competitive in 2009 is wrong in my opinion. Just like I don't think it wise to hope we lose this year to get a better pick.

At this rate, we will be looking at a weak Texas line-up next year unless JD can spin some of our prospects into major league talent. If not (and I am not sure trades are the way to go), then the major rebuild is under way.

The farm gives some hope, but watching 2008 end before it starts is troubling.

Dye and Byrnes
They aren't that good, and are going to be overpaid.  Overpaying for not good players to get buzz is a good way to end up stuck in last place.

I have no problem with paying for the right options.  Aaron Rowand would interest me.  So would Fukudome or Mike Cameron.

I'd rather go with Nelson Cruz in RF next year, though, than give Dye $14 million per year for the next two years.

Choices are Diminishing
I am not stuck on one person either. But, I think the Rangers need a threat (or two) in the middle of the lineup and more players coming of the board scares me. Something like...

o Ian
o Young
o Rowand
o Dunn
o Hank
o Cruz
o Byrd
o Saltalala
o Cat

That would be much better. But, if the Dunn doesn't happen (which is unlikely). The putting Roward or Fuku or both in the current line-up will keep this line-up weak. And with a down side that is quite bad (who knows on Cruz, Salalala, Hank, Byrd for 2008).

by atlantaranger on Aug 18, 2007 2:02 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well...
The reality is that this lineup is going to be weak next year.  Adding Jermaine Dye isn't going to change that.

There's not a guy out there in the market you can point to and say, "Here's who can put us over the top next season."

free agents
isnt the free agent class after this coming up one supposed to be MUCH better?

i can't recall exact players right now, but i seem to remember being much more impressed with the free agents after the 08 season

Lineup and Payroll
I think that line-up would give us a shot if the pitching has a growth year. But, you're right...no over the top kind of player is there.

I guess I just can't stand the thought of payroll being $65M-ish next year. Basically, the Rangers not using possible Arod money back nor Teix payroll savings would be very frustrating. Hell, 2008 payroll may very likely be less than 2007 especially if you include Arod money in 2007 and it goes away in 2008.

RF
I agree on Dye.

But Cruz? Less his arm, I don't see the talent worth developing? Where's the evidence?

by 3Bagger on Aug 18, 2007 2:05 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

For what it's worth...
Cruz has hit in the minors. Plus hes cheaper and it's not like we are going to challenge for a playoff spot next year (most likely).

Gagne - Back in Texas?
I say we sign Gagne again. 10 Runs in 6 innings for Boston?

He's getting cheaper.

I like Gagne....
even after his recent struggle but not at the expense of CJ.....BGL needs to be this teams closer, even when Aki comes back

Thank God
that means our stupid owner has one less mediocre aging OF to blow all his money on to prove he does in fact spend money.

the aging mediocre overpriced vet is Hick's worst vice.

Dye, awesome, overpay.  Eric Byrnes good dont give us the option.  please other teams resign all your average overpayed vets so our owner doesnt get all hot and bothered and spend 30M on Dyes' Byrnes' and Parks this offseason.

Thats what Doug was talking about over at NMLR,  the approach for so long was backwards, hicks and hart etc, always built top to bottom.  We have to build bottom of the system to top.  like a pyramid.  start at the base of the system and build the foundation then start building for the top.  throwing a bunch of money at the top with no base or foundation would be a disastrous setback.  the 5 year plan is looking good if not great and i have faith in JD's drating and international signing, the 1 year plan?  we saw how that worked this year. are we still playing the 1 year/5 year charade for next? gawd i hope hicks has learned something in his decade of ownership in that regard.

at least with guys like byrnes and dye going off the market, we cant even consider them.  i wish every team would resign all their old guys,

.500 or bust!

Now..
we just need the Twins to pony up for Hunter. Not gonna happen but it would be nice to avoid all the stress that his free agency is likely to cause.
Also, I think its going to be very interesting to see how much Andruw Jones is gonna get.

I think its great that Byrnes and Dye
are off the market, I would not be opposed to going after Rowand or Cameron but guys like Torii, Andrew Jones, Byrnes, and Dye would have been a mistake...

2008 is essentially a rebuilding year....
I thought that there was a chance that the Rangers could win in 2007, but I wasn't convinced. I've liked what JD has done though since the Rangers tanked the first two months.

But the 2007 Rangers really didn't have much chance of being a significantly >.500 team, so IMO, I didn't think it was worth it to gamble the money on players (and for the most part they didn't).

Our lineup is very weak and has been for a while, but there hasn't been a significant player that I've been that interested in to sign.

I say, sign a lot of 1 year deal players a la Gagne, Lofton, and look to flip these guys for prospects near the trade deadline in 2008.

The only pitcher I was really interested in has already signed an extension (Zambrano).

Just wait until 2009 and hope Santana doesn't sign an extension.... (though that didn't work out so well with Oswalt and Zambrano...)

jumbotron
I was emailed a survey by the rangers this week, the one thing i added was put a freaking scoreboard where people in the outfield can see it.

I know chuck morgan mentioned before on the newberg boards that he wants to replace the manual scoreboard with one of the new  led high def screens

Surprised team management is ok with your thoughts
You're pretty outwardly critical of how they handle business -- ad campaigns, "business conspiracy", communication from the farm director, handling of young pitchers...  I know that wouldn't fly if I were bashing my bosses on a blog.  And I wouldn't stand for it if my employees did it.

Don't get me wrong, you're very talented and I'm one of your supporters.  Just saying you come very close to crossing lines with your bosses, arguably going over them a few times.

by AZranger on Aug 19, 2007 8:41 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

i think...
that the benefits the rangers get from cj speaking his mind on forums and blogs far outweighs any perceived negatives by management.

Lets say you own a business that sells something, we'll say latex. and you have a salesman that occasionally says things you don't like but he's out there on his own unpaid time communicating with new and old clients, building a relationship with them. that can only be good for business regardless of what is said that may be bad.

this is 100% free publicity and pr for the team which i'm sure they are more than happy with.

Give CJ a break
You are obviously not one of his supporters if you are trying to "blow the whistle" on a non-issue. You are more of a hypocrite. Stop putting words in his mouth because he is not "bashing bosses" and "crossing lines" as you seem to think. He has said on his blog and elsewhere that he would like to offer even more of an opinion on the state of the Rangers, but he realizes that it would be crossing the line at that point.

While you're in the mood for being philanthropic, you should consider phoning Twins GM Terry Ryan and inform him that the best pitcher in MLB doesn't seem too content with how that organization is being run.

CJ is entitled to free speech, like any other citizen, and you should appreciate the insight he can offer to you as someone much closer to the game and in the clubhouse. Not to mention, this is someone who will play a prominent role on this team for the next 10 years or so.

nah
I really doubt his bosses care too much.

Have you seen the way this dude has been dealing lately? As long as he's not talking anything criminal, racist, or related to sports-gambling, I imagine he can pretty much say whatever he wants without anyone caring too much as long as he keeps making the American League his little bitch.

Now, if he all a sudden up and gets married to Doug Davis' wife, there might be some frowns.

Dye
A 2-year deal at 11M per year is not a bad deal.  This guy's had 2 bad months the past two years.  Agree he's aging, but I bet he's productive in 08 and 09.

Fukudome
I confess to not knowing a whole lot about Fukudome other than that he has the greatest name in history.

Does anyone have his translations handy?

I'm wondering how he compares to Hideki Matsui?

by Brian Hayes on Aug 19, 2007 7:11 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Fukudome
The comparisons I've seen are to Bobby Abreu, from a few years ago when Abreu was good.

Decent power for a corner outfielder, sees a lot of pitches, draws a lot of walks, very good defensive outfielder with a cannon arm.

In short
a combined package representing a serious upgrade over any outfielder on the 40-man now or in the foreseeable future.
