OT: Liverpool and Chelsea

What a great game early in the EPL season.  I can't believe Gerrard is starting with a fractured toe.. it's too early in the season for that nonsense.

I know there are a few proper football fans on this site, I guess this can be an open thread for that.

Oh, and my Man City club is on top of the league today with the 1-0 win against ManU.  I think I'm more happy about that win than I am the standings.

Man City
On behalf of Liverpool fans everywhere, we say "thank you" for beating United!

Liverpool leads 1-0 at the half, on a Fernando Torres goal. The game's been pretty chippy, with four yellow cards so far.

"Then I met some friends for a beer, went to a BoDeans's concert, and son of a vondruke, if I didn't leave him at the concert hall."

You're welcome.
I've had quite a few people thank me (us) for that already today.

Here Here
Good work.

Now we just need to find a way to make Man U lose every game.

by BAC on Aug 19, 2007 1:00 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

That would make me so happy...
I would be like Ohio fans and find a couch to light on fire.  Hell, I almost did when City beat them today.

by chief on Aug 19, 2007 1:03 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Yeah
That was a joke.

by zywica on Aug 19, 2007 11:31 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

And that made it a draw
What a crock.  Liverpool should have gained 3 points, not 1.

by chief on Aug 19, 2007 11:57 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

almost as bad as...
the foul awarded against Petrov for Aston Villa last week that set up Gerrard's free kick leveller.

But how quickly the kopites forget...

Yeah, well at least I'm housebroken.

by HypoLuxa on Aug 19, 2007 10:45 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Wow
Was wide, but that was quite a shot from Babel late. I wish Arsenal had paid up for him.

by zywica on Aug 19, 2007 11:50 AM CDT   0 recs

Yeah
Johnny come lately though, have just gotten into PL in the last few years, love Wenger (hope he sticks around).

by zywica on Aug 19, 2007 12:01 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I'm a big Arsenal fan,
Henry was my favorite player in all of Soccer and i was really sad to see him go, but Arsenal was starting to fade and don't have a shot at competing for a championship this year, so he probably got out at the right time.

by sprite on Aug 19, 2007 12:08 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

If I were a Liverpool fan
I'd feel pretty good about Chelsea using stalling tactics for the last ten or so minutes. They were on their heals most of the time after the bad penalty was awarded, and you don't see that very often with them in an even situation.

by zywica on Aug 19, 2007 12:00 PM CDT   0 recs

Yep
Even though we only scored the one (and that PK call was absolute BS) it seems that we're pressuring opposing teams a lot more offensively this season.

Torres is already looking like the biggest scoring threat this team has had in years, and Babel is going to be a star once he settles in and gets a bit more experience.

"Then I met some friends for a beer, went to a BoDeans's concert, and son of a vondruke, if I didn't leave him at the concert hall."

by RCCook on Aug 19, 2007 12:09 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I didn't...
think the PK was terribly bad.  wasn't the best of calls, but there did appear to be contact on it.  I do agree though overall the ref job was pretty poor.  He tried to make himself a part of the game too much.

by rangers85 on Aug 19, 2007 12:11 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

But
it looked like to me that the actual contact came after he had already decided to let the ball go through to Drogba.

by zywica on Aug 19, 2007 12:21 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I don't...
have it still on DVR, but it doesn't matter whether you're the active player, or a player 100 feet away from play, if you commit a foul in the box it's a PK.

by rangers85 on Aug 19, 2007 12:35 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

OK
and how many times do you think that some sort of obstruction 100 feet away from play, but in the box, is called a penalty? About .0000000001 of the time?

by zywica on Aug 19, 2007 7:56 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

FWIW
they suspended the ref for this week for poor officiating...
.500 or bust!

by Jayslick on Aug 21, 2007 3:26 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Overall, that was a dirty game
Hard fouls, unsportsmanlike conduct, and a really terribly officiated game.  The announcers (as I) were wondering.. didn't a Chelsea player get booked twice?

by chief on Aug 19, 2007 12:02 PM CDT   0 recs

Horribly Officiated Match
Which is why I don't think the PK call was anything outside the norm for the rest of the match.  Both sides were playing rough and there were bad calls the whole match.

by rangeressary on Aug 19, 2007 8:07 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I had...
to tread water carefully in this thread, making sure there wasn't a Blackburn/Arsenal score in it.  Watching that game at 1:30.  Go Rovers, beat the scum that is Arsenal.

by rangers85 on Aug 19, 2007 12:13 PM CDT   0 recs

I'm not going to tell you the result
but it might have been another six goal mess...

Might have been.

by zywica on Aug 19, 2007 12:23 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Haha...
good game overall though.  That's the type of game that makes me a Blackburn fan.  I like their grittiness.  They can play a style and composed game when needed, or they can play a gritty and hard fought type game when needed.  The ref had his bad moments in it though including calling a ghost penalty against Blackburn down in the box on the same play an Arsenal player (I think Fabregas?) hit the ball off his own line with his hand that should have resulted in a PK and red card.

by rangers85 on Aug 19, 2007 3:56 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I can't stand
Robbie Savage. I'm sure you love him; he's that kind of player where his fans love him and everyone else hates him. But he is such an ass.

by zywica on Aug 19, 2007 8:24 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

a lot of times
I can't dtand Savage.  Usually he has one or two games a year where he completely gives in to the theatrics.  But believe me, he is MUCH improved from his Birmingham and Leicester days.

That game, though, was a crock.  How nobody saw the handball that kept the ball out of the net is beyond me.  The blind commentators saw it without the aid of instant replay.

And of course Wenger comes out saying we were out for violence when there were just as many flying tackles thrown around by Arsenal.

And van persie is such a schoolgirl. That's all I have to say about that or else I'll blow a gasket.

Today's game was so infuriating it was hard to watch...

Yeah, well at least I'm housebroken.

does anyone else think liverpool is overrated??
granted, i am an everton fan, but i think, that even with the addition of Torres, many people are hyping up liverpool a little too much

by hinduplaya on Aug 19, 2007 1:11 PM CDT   0 recs

No
I think when the dust settles, they'll be on top and win it all.  And I'm a City fan, so no biases.

by chief on Aug 19, 2007 1:13 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Chelsea
They'll win it.

by zywica on Aug 19, 2007 7:57 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Extremely
I don't think this will be a strong season for Liverpool.  They are still being overrated for a lucky win over Chelsea in the Champion's League...not that I'm biased towards Chelsea or anything though...

by rangeressary on Aug 19, 2007 8:10 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Liverpool
Liverpool may not win the league this season, but they don't exactly suck, either. In the past three seasons, they have:
  • played in two Champions League finals, winning one and losing one
  • played in a League Cup final, losing to Chelsea
  • won an FA Cup
  • finished fifth one season and third the last two, in one of the top leagues in the world
And now they've added Torres and Babel, two very talented young players, to go with what was already a fairly strong club. 17 players on the first team are members of their national sides- something only other big clubs like Chelsea, Man United, AC Milan, Barcelona, and Madrid can match- and I think they've proven themselves against most of the other top teams in Europe over the past few seasons.

Granted, I am a little biased, but I think my team has what it takes to be a legitimate contender this season, both in Europe and in the Premier League.

Man City may surprise us all, though- who knew Sven could actually coach? :)

Man City
I agree except I would say that they "will" surprise us.  They could be very strong in another year or two.

by rangeressary on Aug 20, 2007 6:30 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

They're playing surprisingly well thus far
And I would be thrilled with a top 5 finish. A top four finish and I might mess my pants.

by chief on Aug 20, 2007 10:26 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Yes
I'm a Everton sympathiser mostly because I hate Liverpool so fucking much.

Although Torres is going to get a lot of goals for them so they can sit back and play hoofball...

Yeah, well at least I'm housebroken.

by HypoLuxa on Aug 19, 2007 10:50 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Styles
Looks like he won't be reffing next week.  I admit that the PK call was pretty bad, but it was in line with the poor officiating throughout the game.  I think this is a good move to suspend the guy for at least a week.

by rangeressary on Aug 20, 2007 8:33 AM CDT   0 recs

Like an NBA ref
the way he officiated the rest of the match indicated to me that he knew he blew that call.

by zywica on Aug 20, 2007 8:40 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Good comparison
I agree completely.

by rangeressary on Aug 20, 2007 8:42 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Yay!
Can we have our two points back too? :(

August 25th
Blackburn - Everton

Two Blackburn fans(and the everton fan on here?)  going to meet up at a pub to watch it..

However, other than the Londoner in Addison I don't know of any places to watch the game.

Anyone know of a good pub between Carrollton and Ft Worth?

Yeah, well at least I'm housebroken.

by HypoLuxa on Aug 20, 2007 10:44 AM CDT   0 recs

I am so disappointed
I think this is 2 straight soccer threads without the obligatory soccer sucks comments.
What kind of a douche quotes himself?
