Around SBN: My First Fight: Diego Sanchez

Volquez scratched from Tuesday start.

Per Jamey.

Arrived late for a workout in New Orleans, so they're going to delay his re-call, possibly until Sept.
                                                             Wow.

WOW
Thats gotta be frustrating for Management.  That sucks.

Wouldn't you...knowing your going to get called up to the Bigs...show up like an hour before your going to be there for any workout?!  I don't understand people like this...

If Rangers Make Playoffs, I will be a Hundredaire via Online Betting....Let's Do This!

So I take it I am the only one
who thinks the Rangers are overreacting?  And that Edinson is getting punished for Juan Dominguez's sins?  Yes, it was stupid for him to oversleep, but I would guess that he joined a bunch of his teammates in New Orleans after the game (it's only a $15 cab ride from the stadium) and just stayed out a little too late.  I don't think breaking the rules should be ignored by any means, but I don't know why they didn't just fine him instead of refusing to call him up.  Almost seems like cutting off your nose to spite your face to me...

Perhaps
but I thought part of the reason he was sent to the minors this year in the first place was concerns about his maturity.  And we don't know why he was late or what his excuse was when he finally arrived.  We're all just speculating, of course.

I agree
I also thought that part of the reason for sending him all the way back to A ball was to give him a wake up call and it seemed to work.

I wouldn't think that management would widely overreact if he was just a few minutes late and nothing else played into it but that may change depending on if more information becomes available.

by baylor on Aug 20, 2007 12:18 PM CDT up reply actions

I hope that more info does NOT become available
No need to throw the guy under the bus.

Apparently he was late, and it is costing him big league experience.  I hope that is the end of the story.

A decision was made to delay his being called up to the majors, so the club had to give some reason for that.  But as far as giving out more information, I don't see how that would be beneficial for the team or the individual.

I agree
and it is probably really us that are overreacting.  Volquez and the team will get over it, and any more information given out would serve no useful purpose.

It's just a shame
that apparently he didn't get the message from being sent down to A ball.

by DJCahill on Aug 20, 2007 1:20 PM CDT up reply actions

I dunno
Maybe the organization wanted to make a pretty strong statement that they're not going to tolerate him screwing around. Maybe this isn't the first time he acted immature. Act like a responsible adult and we'll treat you like one.

I guess I'd call it overreacting if the Rangers were in a pennant run, but they're not.

Well Mr. Burns had done it. The power plant had won it. With Roger Clemens clucking all the while.

Since I'm an accountant
I am thinking he cost himself quite a bit of money.  Those couple extra minutes may have been the most expensive in his life.

Someone
needs to explain to Volquez how much Juan Dominguez cost himself by being a flake.

by DJCahill on Aug 20, 2007 12:04 PM CDT reply actions

actually...............
he cost himself because he couldnt pitch.

If JuanDom pitched like Pedro Martinez his antics would have been blown off as "thats just JuanDom being JuanDom".

This is just what happens when you havent proven anything.

Being late doesnt matter if your Manny or TO or the countless others that are late and you never hear about.

Id love to know how many Rangers have been late for something this year..........

oh wait, I know, they all have......it was for the start of the season.

volquez
does he really have a 5cent head, is he that immature or does he just make bad decisions

by knockoutking24 on Aug 20, 2007 12:43 PM CDT reply actions

Dang,
none of ya'll have screwed up the night before a big day at the office?  No one "met" someone they had a hard time saying goodbye to the night before?  No doubt, bone-head move, but can you really erase all the good hes shown this year by one poor decision?

by corbsclinton on Aug 20, 2007 2:33 PM CDT up reply actions

Yes
Everyone's screwed up, and most of us paid the price for that screw up. I like the fact the Rangers (as the article below states) are trying to develop players both on and off the field.

That's one of the best things about baseball. It doesn't seem like there are very many Vick-level transgressions in MLB. And I want it stay that way

It's not like he's banished forever. He'll be up when rosters expand in Sept.

Well Mr. Burns had done it. The power plant had won it. With Roger Clemens clucking all the while.

by WyoRanger on Aug 20, 2007 2:44 PM CDT up reply actions

well
i was assuming he missed the whole thing

has no one screwed up the night before the big day at the office and NOT showed up the next day?

its one thing to be late - its another to COMPLETELY miss it because you "overslept"

Volquez
the question i ask is, how late was he? are we talking 30min? or was it several hours?

if it was a few min it's harsh... but several hours then i can kind of see the punishment.

by rentz on Aug 20, 2007 12:53 PM CDT reply actions

Probably more to it ..
.. there is probably more to it than just "being late".  I don't want the club to release the details, but you probably have to read between the lines a bit here.

According to http://www.rangers.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20070820&content_id=2159675&vkey=news_tex&am p;fext=.jsp&c_id=tex he wasn't late, he missed the workout entirely. And FWIW, this happened in New Orleans. So, yeah, read between the lines.

by bks on Aug 20, 2007 2:09 PM CDT up reply actions

Missed it completely?
That goes beyond stupid, talk about ruining the good vibes you had from a local story that boasted your maturity.

Re:
That is what I was referring to above.  I didn't think it was a simple 5 minute tardiness, but didn't think it would be so bad that it needed to be covered up to avoid people being embarrassed.

by baylor on Aug 20, 2007 2:55 PM CDT up reply actions

Overreaction
Assuming there aren't other circumstances involved, this seems pretty petty to cancel a guys major league start.

He's done a lot this year to prove to the organization he's developed the proper work ethic and what not, and I don't think 1 instance that we've all done before should warrant this.

by chase1971 on Aug 20, 2007 1:10 PM CDT reply actions

I agree
"Daniels said the Rangers didn't want to send a bad message to other players in the farm system by calling him to the big leagues right after committing the infraction. They also didn't want him bumping a Major League pitcher out of the rotation under those circumstances."

How about a simple fine? That's still discipline. Hearing Daniels concerns about "bumping a Major League pitcher out of the rotation" is quite humorous to me. I wouldn't exactly call anyone in our rotation a "Major League" pitcher as far as 2007 goes. Would we really suffer if Loe missed a start?

This sends a message to the younger guys alright. It says "Hey I better not fuck up," which is true.
However, I think every minor leaguer who got to play w/ Edinson this year is probably pretty TO'd w/ the organization right now.

Idk, my 2 cents.

This is absolutely
moronic to do this now. When has Edinson ever had any "juandom" episodes before this?(for you people who like to compare Edi to JuanDom)
"Jon Daniels is going to end up being the best thing to ever happen to the Texas Rangers." - me, a long time ago...

I'm curious to know what Jamey thinks...
I assume he's met Edinson before and would know if there is a history of these sort of problems.

Just wait for the next report I guess.

by cmkelly29 on Aug 20, 2007 4:36 PM CDT reply actions

According to Yahoo ...
... there is indeed a history. This is from the fantasy stats page for Volquez, so take it for what it's worth, though I doubt Yahoo would make this up:

Aug 20 Volquez will not be called up as expected prior to Tuesday's game, as he overslept and missed a scheduled side session at Triple-A Oklahoma City on Sunday according to the Dallas Morning News' Evan Grant's blog.

Recommendation: Volquez made a habit of showing up late and other similiar transgressions earlier in his professional career, so Texas management has to be disappointed at this latest developement. Volquez will have to wait until September before he's called up.

i was really looking forward to watching that start.  im legitimately disappointed.  wish EV hadnt dont that to give them a chance.
