How many K's for Padilla? how many for Bedard?
Guesses?

15 for Bedard
6 for Padilla

Yep.  And I'd almost rather see Zack Minassian at 3B instead of Melhuse.  :)

I'll

I'll take the under.

Does anyone know the record...
...for strikeouts by a team in consecutive games?  With the 19 that Santana (17) and Nathan (2) threw on Sunday, I'd imagine that anything in the teens tonight would put the Rangers pretty close to a record for futility...

Yay!
Michael Young and Marlon Byrd are hitting .303 and .314. The rest of the lineup is:

.248
.229
.246
.204
.212
.188
.220

That is so awesome.

Gerald.....
...you weren't that good to begin with.  You do alot of things okay, but nothing great.  Thats your problem.  If you handled the pitching staff great like they wanted you too, well then I'd see your complaint.  But you didn't handle them well, the starters had an ERA over 6.  Then Melhuse shows and it miraculously goes down a run and a half.  WTF? Gerald.

In some ways, I can commiserate...
...with the guy.  Washington stated numerous times in spring training and the early part of the season that Laird should just focus on his defense and not worry about the offense.  If the team is now saying Laird's offense isn't up to expectations, I'd call that a bit of a mixed message.  The thing I don't think anybody on the Rangers expected was that Laird's offense would fall off a cliff like it has this season, but I can still see Laird's point in all of this...
"Hello, win column..."

Gerald's defense...
and handling of pitchers was horrific.  Therefore he has no gripe.  He didn't do the job he was told to do and now he's going to be replaced. Thats it.
Put Mayberry Jr. back at First Base.

by Jukebox Joe on Aug 21, 2007 6:15 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I don't disagree at all...
...but I can totally see why Laird would sit there and complain about the mixed signals we was given by the club.  From some of his quotes lately, I think he's trying to force his way out of town, much like Teixeira, but what he doesn't seem to realize is that his numbers indicate that he isn't much more than a mediocre backup, whereas Teixeira could backup his arrogance with his performance.

horrific is a strong word.  Gerald wasn't horrible but he wasn't Brad Ausmus either. How about below average/not good/inconsequential? That better?

Yes it was
The pitchers didn't suck.  It was all Laird's fault.  Just like it was Teixeira's fault the whole team sucked in April and May.  Just like it was ARod's fault that the entire team sucked in 2001-2004.

I am so fucking tired of people pinning the blame on guys sucking on other players.

What kind of a douche quotes himself?

Absolving Laird completely is just as inane and simplistic a viewpoint, don't you think?

by dog named blue on Aug 21, 2007 7:32 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Your right Chris...
...all FIVE of our starting pitchers have terrible seasons because they all just happened to suck at the same time.  Thats way more plausible than its because your catcher isn't handling and game planning along with the pitching staff correctly.

For the love of Christ.
It's "YOU'RE" when you are trying to say "you are."  "YOUR" is a possessive pronoun meaning something belonging to YOU.

It's hard to be taken seriously in your sarcasm when you can't handle simple English.

Lord Jesus,
Please help me use words in the right way when I comment on Lonestarball.com.  Its so important to me that people understand what I'm trying to say. Your/You're, Their/There/They're...I struggle so much and deeply need your guidance.  Please don't let me mess up again, so Athos won't call me a jackass for using the wrong word.  I can't live another moment knowing that I may have kept someone from recognizing what I was truly trying to say.  Help me become a better man, a better friend, a better blogger. Very good, my son.
Admitting you have a problem is the first step on the long road to recovery.

Just on a side note:  you forgot the apostrophe on your "its" up there.  "Its" is the possessive.  "It's" is the contraction for "it is."  But keep trying.

by Athos on Aug 21, 2007 9:52 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

And while we're at it with language
there = as in "over there" or "There is no way you passed English."
they're = they are "They're having trouble reading your posts because your English sucks."
their = possessive "Their English sucks."

might've = might have, not might of  "I might've slept through English class."

it's = it is, "It's like you've never had an English class."
its = possessive  "English loses its meaning when you type."

to = "I'm going to school for English class."
too = "Your English is too bad to read.  You're going to have to retype this."

by kumar75150 on Aug 21, 2007 6:21 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yep
While that ball was hit hard, it was half a step to his right. It is not like he had to dive for it. While it may have been a tough play, that is a play that a big league shortstop has to make. He also loafed after the ball which allowed Roberts to walk home.

Catcher
He is raw at catcher and he is not getting any better when he spends his time at first base. If he is the catcher of the future, he needs to be the full time starting catcher so that he can improve the rest of this year, instead of still looking raw as hell back there on opening day next year.

Not when
you're one player, with five tools.

To be fair, these guys are Johan Santana and Eric Bedard, but still, it's pretty awful.

If Wash wants to get the guys to take pitches, he has to make it clear to guys like Salty and Botts that their jobs aren't on the line based on what they do these last 2 months. Both are clearly pressing.

Laird should also be not here. I don't care where they send him, but not here is preferable.

by FirebatM3 on Aug 21, 2007 7:55 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree with you about Salty but...
Botts is seeing almost 5 or 6 pitches just about every at bat....problem is this year is over and they need to be in there everyday no matter who's pitching and not losing AB's to Sosa and Whiffy

by kumar75150 on Aug 21, 2007 8:03 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

That
  1. the team isn't likely to compete in 2008 anyways
  2. It's a small sample size

How do you like that?
Back to back doubles by, of course, Botts and Cruz.

Ok
this is getting bad, we haven't had a hit that left the Infield.

Wow.....
another pitcher is about to set a team K record against us.....pitch count is pretty high though!

It's funny
that everyone gets so quiet when the Rangers do something. It's like we're shocked into silence.

A.J's looked good
could really use him to fill Mahay's role next year

by slc ranger on Aug 21, 2007 8:21 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Or John Rheinecker
If there's something we're not short on right now, it's pen arms.

Volquez so far
4IP, 2H, 0R, 1BB, 6K

Gold hit another homer that's 23......since 1B is such a question mark right now what about a Cat/Gold platoon next year?

by slc ranger on Aug 21, 2007 8:25 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Gold
hits righties better than he does lefties.

by FirebatM3 on Aug 21, 2007 8:26 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I saw that, very odd,,,,
has he always been that way or just this year?

by slc ranger on Aug 21, 2007 8:29 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think we should make him a Sept call-up
and put him at first and Salty behind the plate....I'm sure Gerald would love that!

Saturday
Man I wish JD would have not been an ass this week. It's either Wright or Wood making the start on Sat. That's not a game I'm looking forward to.

by meatbonelefty on Aug 21, 2007 8:35 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Volquez
broke team rules, and completely missed a session. That'd be a horrible precedent to set.

by FirebatM3 on Aug 21, 2007 8:36 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Who cares?
JD should be trying to finish the year strong and entertain the fans. I know it would be bad for the future and be a bad example to set for young player but isn;t the future about  seeing  a young kid and how he handles himself in the big leagues for a second times. he needs as many starts as he could get right now

Question
So if you're a high school coach and it's the day before the rivalry game, and your hotshot young sophomore quarterback blows off practice, what do you do? Do you put him on the bench to start the game to teach him a lesson so he won't pull that shit when he's a junior and a senior and expected to lead and influence the younger players? Or do you start him because you feel the parents and fans would want to see it, and send the message that the players are free to fuck around all they want as long as they have star power and fan appeal?

Yeah sorry meatbonelefty
gotta go with JD on this one, he did the right thing and we will see him in a couple weeks anyway

I don't know
Do you have a senior JV quarterback as your back up. He (JV quarterback) has had his shot to prove he can fill in but for some reason he can't get it done. I mean he's had four years. Big game, you have a senior quarterback who's had his shot and you have a hotshot sophomore who's there for two more years and needs to have been tested in a big game before you decide if he's the right guy for next year. In these circumstances I would discipline in another way

Been there, no question, you bench him
JD was right. Volquez isn't Dominquez, but he's been shaky on preparation. This is a year of learning lessons. Tough love!

high school rivalry game
I'd play the guy that gives the team the best chance of winning and punish the punk some other way.  It's not fair to punish the entire team by playing a lesser talent.

Of course this situation with Volquez isn't really similar to the hypothetical described above.  I think JD made a solid decision on Volquez.

Ft Worth Cats
are in the playoffs AGAIN this year.  Go support live baseball that doesn't suck.  The Cats organization has been around since 1895 and has won their league championship at least 15 times.  I took my 82 year old mother tonight for her birthday.

I'm glad
that Padilla got checked out, and was injury free and ready to pitch when called up.

After all, his 8.25 ERA and WHIP near 2 in AA just screams that nothing was wrong with him.

by DJCahill on Aug 22, 2007 7:38 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

good to know
that the same doctors that proclaimed Padilla injury free have also diagnosed McCarthy and Aki.

Yeah,
I have developed a ton of confidence in our medical staff the last decade or so.

ahhh relax Dan
It's just a broken shoulder bone in the throwing arm, no big deal at all.  He'll be back in no time.

And remember how the club was hesitant to put Aki on the DL at first because he was sure to be pitching before the 15 days were up?
