Gee...
No Ichiro tonight.  We stand a chance.  Wait, I forgot who was pitching.  Never mind.

That just means
he can pinch-hit whenever needed to win the game.

I wonder ...
would Jeff still take Lopez over Young?  That's an impressive .656 OPS he's sporting.

of course he would
if JHJ was a Mariner, Jeff would take him over Young and Kinsler.......

THIS 'BOTTS' FELLOW...
...needs to get his ass down to Home Depot and buy a wood patch for his bat...

swear to god... if this guy K's tonight...

ugh...

Strikeouts happen.
Relax.  Botts has a history of learning a new level and then dominating.  Give him some time.

by Athos on Aug 25, 2007 6:51 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

i dont know why people dont want to give him
time, the reward if he does develop, completely outweighs what would happen if he doesnt.....

by slash on Aug 25, 2007 6:56 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

HERE'S WHY.
the only reason Botts is up with the big club... is because of his bat... not his glove... his bat.

the only adjustments he has to make are at the plate.  unlike Cruz, Murph, Byrd... whoever... he doesn't have to work on his defense... outfield reads, or outfield speed... throws to the infield... none of that...

he's here to hit, and hit only.  as such, i would expect him to develop quicker... because he only has one area of focus.

that's just me...

i'm all for development and what have you... but, if this guy isn't hitting consistantly by the all-star break next year... i'll be very disappointed.

by oc on Aug 25, 2007 7:30 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

ON TOP OF THAT...
...you have one of the best hitting coaches in all of baseball in your dugout...

from a power stand-point anyway...

well i'd be dissapointed too if he doesnt hit
by the all star break......he'd have a whole offseason to tweak his swing and skill-set and then have a few months to put it together......

I am curious
About one thing. Botts moves up a level, and takes a pretty good time to adjust.  Then he repeats the level, gets off slowly again, then rakes.  Only he's never had even a flash of solid plate presence in MLB.  Will he or won't he?  Players (and people in any job) top out, y'know.
Time does funny things. The worst of which is, it keeps moving when you don't.

by Ed Coffin on Aug 25, 2007 7:14 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think he'll be fine.
He's walking a decent amount.  His slow start in AAA can be linked to a swing adjustment he put in.  The results after he got used to it have been very, very nice.  This is the first opportunity he's had at consistent playing time in the bigs.  He'll be okay.

by Athos on Aug 25, 2007 7:19 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Botts
He can go 0 for the rest of the season, and he should still be our opening day DH or LF next season.  It's not like we're going to the World Series anyway.  The same thing applies to Cruz, in my opinion.

by BCanfield on Aug 25, 2007 7:19 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree
On both, but am more concerned about Botts who would seem more likely to "get it", but hasn't yet.  CruZ may actually be a slower learner, since he has basically gone up on athletic ability alone to this point.

I hope they both break out in 2008.

YEP you'd of thought that Botts would of ...
"gotten it" by now. Wash recently said that it takes a particular type of mental toughness to suceed at DH. He then promptly put Botts out in the field (maybe to jump start him since hes off to such a slow start) which we all know was a disaster. But yes Botts deserves more time hopefully he "gets it" soon

I'D HAVE TO THINK...
...the only reason Botts is playing left tonight is because Sammy is DHing..

this is just to keep Botts swinging... just to keep giving him at-bats.

Cruz
I'd be less inclined to go with Cruz next year if he doesn't show anything.  He's had a lot more time to show something than Botts has.

The problem is that in extended ML time ...
those "flashes" have been spread out quite a bit.  He's been very inconsistent.  At this point, he's had twice as many ML ABs as Botts and his numbers for '07 are remarkably similar to those he put up in '06.

I'd like to see Cruz start producing, but he'd better get it going during this last stage of the season, or I think you have to seriously start thinking of him as a AAAA outfielder.

What's the big deal?
They're playing a meaningless game in late August.  It's not like Botts' defense is going to cost them a pennant.  And maybe, just maybe, if they give him enough chances in the field, he might actually improve his defense enough to be a serviceable fielder next year if he has to be.

Exactly who is he blocking in this situation that should be playing out there instead of him?

tweaking with the right coaches you can improve in any area of your game. I'd much rather have someone who hits well in the majors than the minors. If Botts never gets it together on his tombstome it will read " He hit minor league pitching very well "

No there isn't "tons of them."
Your hero DeRosa isn't hitting significantly better than his minor numbers when he was producing OPSs in the mid-.700s.

I would imagine your reluctance to create a list has more to do with you not knowing what you're talking about than "wasting your time."  Hell, you're wasting everyone else's time every time you post here, so why not waste your own by actually supporting your bullshit?

by Athos on Aug 25, 2007 8:34 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

once you again Athos you missed..
the point. Minor league numbers don't matter if you can cut it in the BIGS. Murphy is tearing the cover off the ball and I bet Rudy has something to do with it. You're much happier with a guy like Botts who's hitting .218 BUT he has great minor league numbers. That's just your style you schmuck !

Murphy
He's had 25 ABs.

Matt Kata had a .387/.424/.613 line in his first 31 ABs this year.

And people were talking about how he was the new DeRosa, and Rudy had turned him around, just like they are now with Murphy.

"Get it, got it, good chump?"
The only thing I'm "getting" is that you don't have a clue what you are talking about.  I'm "getting" that your primary purpose in posting here is to annoy.

Personally, I hope every player that puts on a Rangers uniform performs well.  I certainly don't root against any of them the way you seem to be rooting against Botts.  But to declare Murphy the real deal and Botts a bust based on their ridiculously small sample sizes is the height of stupidity.

Now I'm sure we're all anxiously awaiting your next little "finger snap around the world" comeback that will only further confirm your position as a board ass clown.  Let's have it.

No, ARod didn't.
At age 19 he stopped at three different levels, putting up .900+ OPS in two of them and ended up in the majors.  That ain't struggling.  His AAA OPS at age 20 was over 1.000.

by Adam J. Morris on Aug 25, 2007 8:38 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

That's all well and good
But a guy who has never hit well in the minors isn't likely to suddenly start hitting well in the majors because of the hitting coach.

And the idea that Murphy, a former first round draft pick, just didn't get good coaching in the Boston organization, and that's why he didn't hit, is just silly.

I think Aki should be
...the closer when he's healthy.

If he comes back next year healthy, they should make Aki the closer and flip him, like they did Gagne, at the 08 deadline.

I'm ok with that but I think Aki
can be flipped just as well as a set-up guy....there was a ton of interest in him this year before he was hurt.....actually more interest then there was for Gagne!

No...
...Feldman's problem is that he sucks.  82-84 mile an hour fastballs from sidewinder with bad control is BP for AAA teams.
