Rangers Catching in 2008

I'm really intrigued by the quality of catching depth that the team has at this time.  Where do you think these players will be in 2008?  I put my guesses in parentheses.

Jarrod Saltalamacchia (starting catcher)
Gerald Laird (non-tendered...just a hunch)
Chris Stewart (backup catcher)
Guillermo Quiroz (OKC)
Taylor Teagarden (OKC)
Salomon Manriquez (Frisco)
Max Ramirez (Frisco)
Chad Tracy (Clinton - again? or Bakersfield)
Cristian Santana (Spokane?)

Am I being too optimistic?  It just seems that a lot of them are performing extremely well at their current levels and could merit the jump next season.

Okay
There's no way in hell Laird is non-tendered.

They'd either bring him back as the backup, or trade him.

my question is how would Gerry
react to being the back-up?  From what I have read I don't think he would take it very well.  He has value and I think JD will get what he can in the offseason.

It's just too bad that Gerry doesn't hit better because I can see his talent and to me he has more than most of the catchers playing today.

Laird will be
a backup somewhere by 2009.  Hopefully we can trade him while someone starved for catching thinks of him as a starter.

I think Laird gets traded in the offseason
I think Gerry is better than most people think, but I think our future is Salty behind the dish.  I think we would be hurting ourselves if we tried to make Salty a first baseman and keep Laird behind the plate.

if fine with one season of stewart
until teagarden gets ready.  by all accounts, at least his defense is good enough to be a solid backup.

Yankees
I actually think they'll re-sign Posada after this season.

But would they trade anything to get Laird/Teagarden+ for after that deal?  Could you pry Humberto or Alan Horne away?

If
Laird is traded, I think it will be a straight up one for one type deal with a team with catching troubles.  For example, the Giants, Blue Jays, Phillies and Marlins.
Mark Connor just shows up to the ballpark to collect a paycheck.

Philies
If the Phillies pick up Barajas' option for next season, it would be Laird and Barajas all over again.

by Excel Hearts Choi on Aug 28, 2007 11:58 AM CDT up reply actions

Yeah, it would be funny
seeing Laird back to backing up Barajas.

so is everyone in agreement that
Teagarden = OKC
Max Ramirez = Frisco

?

That works for me
I'm not sure who I want at Bakersfield (though I'm sure it's not Tracy, as he is NOT a catcher).

I'd like to see them challenge Santana with an assignment to Clinton. If he scuffles a bit and has to repeat the league in '08, so be it.

That's gonna be a fun team next year with Feliz, Fabio, Engel Beltre, Beavan, Main, Neil Ramirez, Matt West, and maybe some more of the Latin American kids.

The 40 trumps all!

Jonathan Greene
Do you think that Greene could make that jump to Bakersfield with Santana and Pina at Clinton.  I know that it makes more sense for Greene and Pina to split time, but I really think that Pina needs to repeat low A.

Pudge
Pudge .276/.289/.421

He'd have to promise to go back on steroids before I'd take him.

I think
you handle Sharky the best, undoubtedly through years of experience.
Forget Johnny Bench, we got Gerry "the Jet" Laird

Better than our 2007 catchers line
Nuff said.
