8/7 minors

Minors threads get a promotion for a couple of days...

With Frisco and Bakersfield both off and Hurley not pitching, most of the interest lies with the three lower level clubs. Beau Jones, Brigham and maybe Michael Main (if he starts game two of their DH) are featured.

Brigham is already done getting bombed to the tune of ten hits and nine runs (five earned) in 4.2 innings. Jones has a hitless inning in his first start since very early in the year (and only his second overall).

Even though I beat you by 52 seconds, I'll delete the diary since this is in the main section.

Beau Jones has struck out one and walked one in one scoreless inning so far.

Jones
has given up a couple in the third. Otherwise a decent line so far.

Jones done
Jones is finished.

2.2 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 3 K, 1 HR

He has been a reliever all year, so he probably won't be going deep into games even as a starter.

From AZL
Grullon is in, doing fine through 2 IP. Beltre has paused his K-fest and has a hit. Santana with a good game so far, 1-1, BB, SB.

Beltre 2-5 now
and Santana has reached four times, 1B, BB, BB, HBP. That will help the ole OBP out.

Bakersfield
Game cancelled because seven Visalia players were in a car wreck yesterday.  No one seriously injured, I don't think.

Injuries
One of the players is in the hospital with a fractured skull, but I don't believe any other players are still hospitalized.

From MILB.com
The accident occurred Monday morning, the Arizona Republic reported Tuesday. Infielder Blake Sharpe sustained the most serious injuries, Arizona Diamondbacks general manager Josh Byrnes told the newspaper. The 23-year-old remains hospitalized with a fractured skull.

The Class A Advanced Oaks are the Diamondbacks' affiliate in the California League.

Brett Anderson, a 19-year-old left-hander, suffered a mild concussion and Cody Evans, a 23-year-old right-hander, was examined for a back injury, although neither player was hospitalized, according to the newspaper.

The other players involved in the crash were right-handers Hector Ambriz, catcher John Hester and outfielders Cyle Hankerd and Greg Thomson.

Wow
Obviously the story I'd read left out a lot of info.

There's a joke in there waiting to happen.
"seven Visalia players were in a car "

Ever been to Visalia?
I don't want to get into the whole illegal immigrant driver's licenses debate right now... but that part of the state certainly has more than its fair share of illegals.

Beltre
Beltre went 2-5 in game one today and so far has a single in two at bats in game two. Nice to see him break out of his mini-slump.

Anyone know
anything about this Ben Henry guy they picked in like the 30th round? He's got good size and has pretty good numbers for a HS arm.

by Brett Perryman on Aug 7, 2007 11:21 PM CDT reply actions

Saw him the other day
He was ranging between 83-86 on his fastball, but apparently he was 86-88 during the high school season.

Good question
All I wrote down was his velocity. It was one of those things where I figured I would remember enough about him, but I don't. Oops.

Looks like
a projectability pick to me. According to his hometown paper, he throws up to 90 mph with a curve. Apparently got slagged a bit by his HS coach.

Cristian Santana
I really like what I'm seeing statistically from this dude. His athleticism seems to be the selling point, but he's shown some pop and will take a walk. He's hitting .227/.370/.455 through twelve games, and in his last six he's 6-19. He strikes out too much, but other than that there are really good things to see.

OT: Melky
Wondering if anybody has changed opinions about him.  Seems that most around here thought he was all hype and didn't want the Rangers to touch him.

http://lonestarball.com/story/2007/6/19/182125/906

Since the ASB, he is .357/.398/.571/.969, and for the season he is in the top 6 in ZR and RF.  A real spare.

Care to amend your opinion that he is a "4th outfielder" and "bad at baseball"?

Melky's minor league numbers
aren't even as good as Blalock's, so he'll probably disappoint.   :)

took me a minute...
...to figure out your implication ;)

What was your take on Melky when he was being discussed as part of the return in a potential Teix to the Yanks deal?

solid, probably,
but not a superstar.  I really sit on the fence with him.

by t ball on Aug 8, 2007 1:48 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah
I don't think you can definitively pin the superstar label on any 22 year old kid.

But my point is that several have labeled him as a spare, a 4th outfielder, a product of Yankee hype, or a Marlon Byrd wannabe.  Considering what Melky has already done, I don't understand those characterizations.

by tricer on Aug 8, 2007 2:14 PM CDT up reply actions

Not really
Not saying he's not going to continue to prove me wrong... just saying I still believe he's overrated, and I still wouldn't have wanted him as the major piece when we traded Teixeira.
Gas, brake, honk. Gas, brake, honk. Honk, honk, punch. Gas, gas, gas.

by thedirkatron on Aug 9, 2007 12:49 AM CDT up reply actions

My opinion hasn't changed
I may be wrong, but I believe that Cabrera is "only" controlled through 2011.  While that seems like a long time, I think 2008 is probably a wasted year, and I wanted any return from Teixeira to give us as much depth for as many years as possible.

While its possible he may turn into such a special player that I'd regret it, and certainly being a league average MLB hitter at 21 and then showing progression are great indicators.

However, anyone who can call a 21-22 year old league average a "spare" isn't paying attention.
