8/8 minors - late games version

Michael Kirkman going for Clinton, yikes...

Doug Mathis for Frisco as Chris Davis tried to raise his .364/.423/.864 AA line (7 games).

Poveda could make his Cal League debut, and Main should finally get his turn for the AZL club. I'm pretty anxious to see what Cristian Santana and Engel Beltre have in store for us the rest of the month.

We called it
Kirkman was awful in the first inning.

1 IP, 3 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 2 BB, 1 K

He finally has some success in the bullpen in Spokane so you promote him to the Clinton rotation. That is one of the dumbest moves I have seen the Rangers make in a long time. That is up there with thinking Sam Narron was ready for the big leagues when his opponents batting average was about .350 in Double A.

Looks good
After the first inning he appears to have settled down. I would have promoted Reed to Clinton and not Kirkman, but hopefully it will work out.

Narron
Whatever happened to Sam Narron Jr., anyway?

Brewers
I think he is with the AA team for the Brewers.

Teagarden
Teagarden hit a two run homer in the second inning to get Frisco on the board.

Kirkman done, Crow rocked
Kirkman is done after four. His first inning was horrible but he threw three nice innings after that. Craig Crow came in to start the fifth inning and gave up four more runs. After seeing Crow at Rice, I really thought he would be a better pro than he has been. He has been injured some, but he hasn't looked that great when he has been healthy.

Crow
Well, he officially looked worse than Kirkman. Here is his final line for tonight.

2.2 IP, 8 H, 9 ER, 3 BB, 1 K, 2 HR

Ouch.

Main
Sometimes a bad outing is what a player needs, but Main seems to have his head on his shoulders so I doubt he needed a rough outing to keep him working hard. This is the kind of outing that someone like Beavan is going to need if he signs to show him that he isn't ready for the majors as an 18 year old.

Main's final line
Main is finished. Not as dominant as his other outings, but I guess we couldn't realistically expect him to finish the season with a 0.00 ERA.

3 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 3 K, 1 HR  1.42 ERA

Even though milb.com had Poveda
in the pre-game probs, looks like Walker got the start.

Oh and
Andrus and MaxRam both singled in their first ABs.

Wash is a moron
So you leave Melhuse in to hit, then pinch hit Lair for Wilkerson who hits lefties really well and has alraedy homered against one tonight.

Melhuse
is one of Wash's favorites. Not saying this is good or bad, just the way it is.

Boggs
He has really good OBP in Frisco. But what catches my eye is his LHP/RHP split.

vs LHP: .344/.434/.722
vs RHP: .235/.374/.406

The 42/46 BB/SO keeps that split looking okay, but from a 24 year old in AA, that smacks of a platoon guy. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but it keeps him from being a good choice as a top ten prospect in what is now a deep system.

Boggs
Sounds about like the report on him when he was in college. This was from the 2004 draft preview on Baseball America.

"Few college players look as good in a uniform as Boggs, an excellent athlete who has made progress with the bat this season and moved into the first five rounds. Boggs lost his starting job for part of his sophomore season, when he struck out too much in an attempt to hit for more power. A switch-hitter who's better from the right side, he has shortened his stroke this year to get better plate coverage. While he was still swinging and missing a lot, he had raised his average while hitting for solid power. His tools, average across the board (his arm might be a tick above), compare in many ways to former Tech star Jay Payton. Boggs may be a tweener who ends up a fourth outfielder."

platoon
seems likely, though even if you only take his righty stats, a .780 ops from your CF is quite acceptable, especially if he's playing well defensively.

Washington
Of course, the way he sometimes uses players he might just play Boggs only against righties...

yes
I wrote this about a week ago:  "Only six big league center fielders (Granderson, Rowand, Hunter, Sizemore, Ichiro, and Beltran) have an overall OPS better than the .802 that Boggs has posted from his weaker left side."

Right but
they're in the majors, not 24 year olds in AA.

by Brett Perryman on Aug 9, 2007 12:38 PM CDT up reply actions

My guess
is that they sign someone this winter and make the whole question moot.  Boggs can settle in as a good 4th outfielder, mashing lefties and playing good defense.

Beltre
Beltre went 1-5 tonight, but he did hit a three run bomb in the ninth inning.

I don't ever want to go back there to High-A
Volquez game recap ... http://tinyurl.com/yrtbs6

FWIW, during the game, Jim Byers, the OKC radio guy, said the difference he sees in Volquez is that he's developed a third pitch - a useful curveball.  Then EV cites his CB in the article as well.  Can't wait to see it in action.

I was pondering something ... there are enough reports and quotes over the years to make the argument that one of EV's problems on his rise was the oft-described "million-dollar-arm/10c-attitude."  Even BGL has scoffed at EV's ways.  I wonder if part of the Rangers thinking on a kid like EV, from the dirt tracks of the 3rd world, that giving a taste of major league money to him then taking it away via demotion might light a bulb in his head that it IS worth being coached and critically evaluated in order to improve.  Carrot on a $tick - maybe the Rangers thought he needed it.  Just a thought.

that makes a lot of sense...
it'd definitely light a fire under my ass if I went from making big-league cash and riding on a charter to long-ass bus rides with barely any money.

"from the dirt tracks of the 3rd world"
I've read that Volquez family is fairly priviledged and wealthy.

In the pic on that article he's wearing an indians jersey. Is that what the red hawks wear?
