8/8 minors - late games version
Michael Kirkman going for Clinton, yikes...
Doug Mathis for Frisco as Chris Davis tried to raise his .364/.423/.864 AA line (7 games).
Poveda could make his Cal League debut, and Main should finally get his turn for the AZL club. I'm pretty anxious to see what Cristian Santana and Engel Beltre have in store for us the rest of the month.

We called it
1 IP, 3 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 2 BB, 1 K
He finally has some success in the bullpen in Spokane so you promote him to the Clinton rotation. That is one of the dumbest moves I have seen the Rangers make in a long time. That is up there with thinking Sam Narron was ready for the big leagues when his opponents batting average was about .350 in Double A.
And the 3rd and 4th I guess

Wash is a moron
Boggs
vs LHP: .344/.434/.722
vs RHP: .235/.374/.406
The 42/46 BB/SO keeps that split looking okay, but from a 24 year old in AA, that smacks of a platoon guy. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but it keeps him from being a good choice as a top ten prospect in what is now a deep system.
Boggs
"Few college players look as good in a uniform as Boggs, an excellent athlete who has made progress with the bat this season and moved into the first five rounds. Boggs lost his starting job for part of his sophomore season, when he struck out too much in an attempt to hit for more power. A switch-hitter who's better from the right side, he has shortened his stroke this year to get better plate coverage. While he was still swinging and missing a lot, he had raised his average while hitting for solid power. His tools, average across the board (his arm might be a tick above), compare in many ways to former Tech star Jay Payton. Boggs may be a tweener who ends up a fourth outfielder."

I don't ever want to go back there to High-A
FWIW, during the game, Jim Byers, the OKC radio guy, said the difference he sees in Volquez is that he's developed a third pitch - a useful curveball. Then EV cites his CB in the article as well. Can't wait to see it in action.
I was pondering something ... there are enough reports and quotes over the years to make the argument that one of EV's problems on his rise was the oft-described "million-dollar-arm/10c-attitude." Even BGL has scoffed at EV's ways. I wonder if part of the Rangers thinking on a kid like EV, from the dirt tracks of the 3rd world, that giving a taste of major league money to him then taking it away via demotion might light a bulb in his head that it IS worth being coached and critically evaluated in order to improve. Carrot on a $tick - maybe the Rangers thought he needed it. Just a thought.
that makes a lot of sense...
