Going to Frisco tonight

Anybody have any advice, things I need to see, stuff I should look out for?

Sitting first base side so won't have the opportunity of sitting by scouts which I kind of wanted to do.

i think
behind home plate in section 110.  I couldn't get tickets there so i opted for first base side.

just go and sit there among the scouts
it's not real likely you'll get tossed, but if you do, so what?

by mjh on Aug 9, 2007 4:19 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Yeah..
They really don't care, especially on weeknights.  I usually just move to the front row..

yeah
friday and saturday games they'd say something but weeknights don't get huge draws.

My tickets are 1 section over from the scouts, i glance over and see whats going on sometimes but i've never gone over and sat with them.

Behind home plates...about 15 rows up.
Just look for the radar guns and notepads. You can't miss 'em. Befriend an usher. They'll let you poach in a good seat for an inning if you ask them nicely.

Scouts
If you are just going by yourself, you can probably wait a few innings for everyone to get situated and then move into the section where the scouts sit. Frisco gets good attendance, but I doubt every seat will be full for a random Thursday night game.

going
with one other person, but maybe i'll sneak over.

Don't need to sneak
Very friendly ushers. Tell them you're a Frisco-Virgin...considering Season-Tickets (which is always true), and they'll let you sit in some good empty seats for a spell.

Watch out
for those line drive foul balls. My son and I almost got hit the last time we went to a RR game.

Roughriders
Is this your first time? It's hot, so you can probably sit near the scouts as the game progresses. Go sit on the grass for an inning and talk smack to the outfielders...you're within talking distance. Check out the food...it's better than at the Ballpark. Walk around the field...it only takes about 10 minutes. Soak it in...very nice pure baseball-watching experience. You'll go back!

Food
Good call on the food. ab03, you have probably already left for the game, but if you haven't try the Philly Cheesesteaks out behind the left field foul poll.

food
you MUST try the bavarian nuts. there is a cart (though lately 2 carts) behind home plate... those things are addictive.

Food
Yeah, the Bavarian nut stand is awesome. I get those almost every time I go out there.

The Philly cheesesteaks are pretty good too. Plus they have Diet RC, which I really like, and they seem to be the only stadium around that carries it.

Fish tacos
Speaking of ballpark food, the fish tacos at Petco are incredible.

get there early
and watch Davis take BP if you can;   you can also go down to the Riders bullpen and watch the starter throw before the game which is sort of cool;  the bullpen is literally built right into the stands on the LF line, so you can stand three feet behind the pitcher while he warms up (you can look into the glove and see the grip)

by mjh on Aug 9, 2007 4:23 PM CDT   0 recs

what time
do they typically have BP there?  I've never been able to get there more than a few minutes before the game.
mmmmmm...64 slices of American cheese...

BP
Frisco starts taking BP sometime around 4:30 or 4:45 for a 7:30 game and hit for about an hour.

BP
anytime i've been recently, they don't open the gates early enough to see BP. last time i got there really early on either a friday or saturday and had to wait for the gates to open (1hr before start) and by then it was the visiting team doing calisthenics

I am envious
you got to see John Jr. and Teagarden play and play well. Good times.

Quick Thoughts
Casey Benjamin:  Very fluid defense; strong throws the whole night; had one pretty good throw running towards third base and having to jump on the pivot.

Boggs:  Had at least one good running catch covering a lot of ground.  A few solidly hit balls right at people

Davis:  He had a couple of nice defensive plays where he showed off his arm but did bobble the double play ball that resulted in only one out (again showing off his arm).  At least one of those other plays, he had a nice pick of the ball too.  Really impatient at the plate though, swung at a bunch of pitches in the dirt.  Had a nice single to start the game.  Also, dwarfed everybody.

Duran:  Good arm, quick turn of a DP.  Smacked a double off the wall

Teagarden:  Unfortunately didn't get to see his defensive skills at all - never threw anybody out, never had to block a pitch as far as I can tell.  Home run was to right center which is nice.  For both his home run and the Murphy home run, the pitcher had started to get wild with his curve/offspeed so both batters were just sitting fastball.

Frostad:  His home run smacked a billboard(?) 25ft above the 409 sign in dead center

Mayberry: His arm looked only alright.  HR was a line drive shot, did have a sliding catch that I thought he was kind of slow on.  Nice fluid swing though.  Doesn't seem that big, even though he's supposed to be 2 inches taller than Davis.

Mendoza: Didn't miss many bats; induced a bunch of grounders but also gave up a few doubles.  Pitched in the low 90's, topping out at 92.

Murphy:  Like I said before, waited on the fastball and smacked it.  No doubter to RF.

Webster:  Had a terrible game, did nothing at the plate. I thought he was kind of slow, couldn't beat out a DP.  was DH so didn't see him in the field

oh
and the ballpark was a great experience.  Getting out there was easy even though we started during rush hour.  Got there too late for BP (and signs say the ballpark is open only an hour before the game starts) but got to see Mendoza warm up which was pretty cool.  Also seems like Mendoza might mind that people were 3 ft away from him gawking at him.

Players were on the field ready to sign autographs for kids during warm ups.  Had an odd encounter when a  bunch of kids were getting Michael Schlact's autograph and I was watching for other people.  Then Mayberry and Teagarden walked by (I had to look at the names as they passed me) but couldn't really ask for their autographs without snubbing Schlact so I just stood there.

Good food, $5 beers (is what it is) and stayed till the very end.  No trouble with traffic leaving right when everybody else did.

Highly recommended.
