MLB's Active All-Jerk Team
My wife and I share the hobby of baseball (thankfully). And, while I enjoy the stats, percentages, over/unders, and trivia of America's greatest pastime, my wife gets more attached to the actual player; she wants to know if they're a nice person or not. While most of the time I could care less if they're personable or not, there are always those players that seemingly irk you the wrong way.
So, by putting this interesting thought into my head, I propose putting together an All-Jerk team of Active players. Who are the biggest jerks at their particular position? Who makes the cut?
To get us started:
C: A. Pierzynski
1B: K. Youkilis
2B:
3B: D. Wright
SS:
OF: B. Bonds
OF: G. Anderson
OF:
OF:
DH: G. Sheffield
SP: D. Wells
RP: K-Rod
Manager: O. Guillen
Let me know what you think. Please try and refrain from saying you hate a whole team...

Youks
K-Rod's a jerk because he celebrates pretty enthusiastically. I don't know if that really makes him a jerk, though.
Wells is just a loudmouth, bar-fighting asshole.
Which are not to say that Myers and Hillenbrand aren't better selections, of course.

Bonds is considered a jerk
Everything I've read about Bonds indicates that he can be a totally great, classy dude, but he doesn't give a shit about who he offends, including everybody.
Totally ignoring somebody who's trying to ask you a few questions (even if they are a member of the media) is pretty jerky. Nice guys answer the questions, or say "Sorry, not today, not in the mood," or whatever. Bonds is cold.

1b is surprisingly a classy bunch of guys. if you had to choose a primadonna type, the only one i can think of is Tex (though I'm not one of those that really hates Tex), maybe delgado for refusing to DH, maybe Giambi for steroids apology but that doesn't make him a jerk, and maybe Mienkewitcz for not giving up the red sox baseball. but those are tenuous cases at best

anyone remember how much of a jerk he was in the mid to late 90's to fans and everyone else?
i went to fan fest (or whatever they called it then) and he sat facing away from the line of ppl there to get auto's from him. had his dad hand him balls, he signed them and gave them to his dad who gave it back to the person in line.
and no albert belle? lol

those guys...
If we can include players who played in the 90s who aren't active anymore, the 2 biggest jerks in the history of MLB are Eric Plunk and Craig Paquette.

Garret Anderson b/c of playing style and attitude IMO. He might be a nice guy, but he never seems to give that extra punch when going for a fly ball, etc. Stuff that will drive an Angel starting pitcher crazy when trying to get that last out.

All jerk
1B Ryan Klesko - never mind all the belly-aching in three places, the fact that he was more worried about his surf board than his team's playoff chances while with the Padres gets him a spot.
2B Jeff Kent - perhaps the most annoying player of all time. Between the blatant egotism and the inability to get along with multiple teammates, he's a lock.
3B Shea Hillenbrand - the team captain. What an idiot. Whined his way out of 3 franchises.
SS Julio Lugo - between the constant crotch grabbing, the ceaseless motion in the batter's box and his new mega contract, easily the most hatable SS in the league. Oh and he beat his wife. What a tool.
OF Barry Bonds - just a bad guy, surliness is fine, but he goes out of his way to be an ass.
OF J.D. Drew - will forever have a spot thanks to his hold out tactics, what a horrible precedent.
OF Jose Guillen - the dirtiest player in the league bar none. The Mariners should sign him to an extension.
DH Juan Rivera - your token Angel. A team full of jerks.
SP Roger Clemens - the biggest jerk of them all
CL Brett Myers
Manager - Mike Soscia
Minor league player of the Year - Blake Beavan

oh man
# 1987: Due to NCAA violations, all the points he scored last two seasons in college were eliminated from the record books.
# 1994: He was charged with unlawfully carrying a weapon.
# 1994: He swung a free weight at the head of his teammate Carl Herrera, who required 30 stiches.
# 1995: He took two weeks off from the season for "personal problems", only to admit later that he merely wanted an in-season vacation. The incident was hyped as Maxwell being disgruntled at the team's recent acquisition of Hall-Of-Fame guard Clyde Drexler.
# 1995: In a game at Portland, he ran into the stands to punch a fan, later claiming the fan had heckled him over his wife's miscarriage.
# 1997: Ordered to pay $592,000 for knowingly infecting a woman with herpes. The plaintiff was awarded a default judgement as Maxwell did not appear in court.
# 1999: In Florida, he was arrested for failing to pay $160,000 in child support. A warrant was issued for Maxwell's arrest in Florida in December 2004 when he failed to appear for another child support hearing.
# 2005: Maxwell was jailed in January 2005 in Washington state after his arrest as a fugitive on the 2004 outstanding arrest warrant from Florida.
# 2007: In North Carolina, Maxwell was arrested for drug possession charges. This violated his probation and Maxwell turned himself in Alachua County, Florida and was jailed without bond.
derrick coleman:
December 21, 1988, while in Syracuse and charged with criminal mischief in the fourth degree and harassment He later pleaded guilty to harassment and disorderly conduct, both misdemeanors.
In 1995, Coleman was arrested in Detroit and charged with refusing to move his truck and swearing at a police officer. The jury failed to reach a verdict and the case ended in a mistrial.
Coleman along with several others where arrested in 1997 and charged with interfering with a police officer's duty in Detroit. Police said Coleman was released on a $100 bond on the misdemeanor charge.
In 1999, Derrick Coleman pleaded no contest to a disorderly conduct charge stemming from an incident in a Detroit restaurant. Coleman was accused of urinating in front of patrons at Intermezzo Italian Ristorante and was charged with disorderly conduct. Coleman still denies his guilt and says it was a drink that had spilled on his pants.
In 2002, Coleman was pulled over for driving over 100mph and arrested after test results showed he had a blood alcohol level of 0.13 percent when he was stopped on July of 2002. Michigan's legal limit was 0.10 percent. Coleman was taken into custody by officers who suspected that he had been drinking. Coleman was ticketed for operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol and refusing to take a breath test.
Also in 2002, Coleman surrendered himself to police while a member of the Charlotte Hornets on traffic-violation warrants. Coleman paid $800 and was released from the Mecklenburg County jail a few hours later.
Coleman was wanted on charges of driving with a revoked license and using an out-of-state license while his North Carolina license was revoked. Coleman had his license revoked because he refused to take a sobriety test after an accident in October of 2001. Coleman was charged after his sport utility vehicle was involved in a late-night wreck with a tractor-trailer in Charlotte. Coleman and a female passenger received facial and head lacerations, and Eldridge Recasner, a reserve shooting guard for the Hornets, almost died after sustaining a broken shoulder and a partially collapsed lung. While Recasner was still in intesive care, Coleman called the wreck a 'freak accident' and said "I'm just happy everybody's OK and that we can look at this particular point in time laugh and joke about it." Coleman refused to take a blood test after the wreck. Coleman eventually was acquitted of the drunken driving charges due to a mistrial.
Coleman later accused the media of unfairly scrutinizing him for his arrests.
Cedric Ceballos:
doesn't come close to the above 2. i just didn't think he had a good attitude and he literally disappeared when magic made his comeback. certainly not a team guy there.
dennis rodman:
no need to elaborate
shawn kemp:
numerous drug charges. 7 kids out of wedlock with 6 different women.
jr rider:
once during his stay at UNLV, spending a night in jail after an incident in which he abused a worker at a campus Jack in the Box and threw a milkshake into the restaurant's drive-through window.
rider feuded with his coach in his 2nd season resulting in a suspension.
he kicked the female manager of a sports bar and was ultimately convicted of fifth-degree assault.
arrested for pot possession in 1998
3 weeks later arrested for gambling in public
in portland he spat on a heckler
After reports that he'd smoked marijuana in an Orlando hotel room, the league demanded that he attend drug counseling. He refused, and was fined a total of $200,000 until he agreed to attend. He showed up late for a March game in Detroit; rather than serve a three-game suspension, he demanded his outright release.
In January 2006, Rider was arrested in Marin City, California for taking a female friend in his car against her will. He was charged with domestic violence and ordered to stay out of Marin City. Despite this court order, he was spotted in the area a few weeks later. A Marin County sheriff's deputy confronted him, and while fleeing, Rider hit another car. He was arrested in Alameda County in late 2006, and transferred to the Marin County jail after three judges in that county issued bench warrants against him. In February 2007, Rider pleaded guilty to several charges, including felony cocaine possession and evading an officer. He was sentenced to seven months in jail, 120 hours community service and three years' probation. He will also have to complete a drug education program. At sentencing, Rider admitted to a longstanding problem with marijuana; he'd also begun lacing it with cocaine.
Latrell Sprewell:
he attacked head coach P. J. Carlesimo during a Warriors practice. When Carlesimo yelled at Sprewell to make crisper passes (specifically asking him to "put a little mustard" on a pass[1]), Sprewell responded that he was not in the mood for criticism and told the coach to keep his distance. When Carlesimo approached, Sprewell threatened to kill him and dragged him to the ground by his throat, choking him for 10-15 seconds before his teammates pulled Sprewell off his coach. Sprewell returned about 20 minutes later and landed a glancing blow at Carlesimo before being dragged away again.
the Minnesota Timberwolves offered Sprewell a 3 year, $21 million contract extension, substantially less than what his then-current contract paid him. Insulted, he publicly vented his outrage, declaring, "I have a family to feed." He declined the extension, and, having once more drawn the ire of fans and sports media, had the worst season of his career in the final year of his contract.
One month into the 2005-06 season and without a contract, Sprewell's agent, Bob Gist, said his client would rather retire than play for the NBA minimum salary, telling Sports Illustrated, "Latrell doesn't need the money that badly. To go from being offered $7 million to taking $1 million, that would be a slap in the face."
van exel:
i was hard on him. i think he really only had one incident. shoving a ref.

HARSH...
speaking of this:
# 1995: In a game at Portland, he ran into the stands to punch a fan, later claiming the fan had heckled him over his wife's miscarriage.
I think that was later on in the year that I went to my first Mavs game and walked up and down the aisle heckling Maxwell, all the while, he was staring at me with his owl eyes...his crazy owl eyes...at one point, he started walking away from the action on the court and towards me I swear it...he was about to beat up a 15 year old
