no
i don't really mind it at all. so long as he can play nose tackle.

by disposablehero on Sep 18, 2007 3:47 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

nope
He's 25, a beast in the middle of the line; fergy is gone for the year, all they have is ratcliff. This is an absolutely low risk, high reward move...

yeah
and remember...nfl means no guaranteed contracts so if he gets arrested again just release him and you've got no loss

question
i've heard conflicting things on this... does his supsension start now, after signing, meaning he won't be with the Cowboys until week 11? or did the first two games of the season count towards his suspension, meaning he could be playing in week 9?

by disposablehero on Sep 18, 2007 3:47 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

i think
it starts after he signs

the story in the DMN today references it

Incorrectamundo
He has 6 games left on his suspension. Theoretically, it could be only 4, but I think that bullshit speeding ticket he got in AZ doomed any chance he had of Goodell reducing it by 2.

What I found odd was the fact that his "bodyguard" was shot down in 2005. Why does a 300 pound NFL lineman need a bodyguard? Dude must have some meanmugging enemies...

I will not get my comeuppance!

suspension
i think it was going on even though he wasnt signed.

He's perfect for Texas..

He's also a big fan of dogs!

Why not?
Dude was gonna get a second chance somewhere, he's too good not to. Why not make it here when he fills a HUGE hole on the depth chart and potentially fills a spot along the DL for the next several years, assuming he plays at the level he did in Chicago and keeps himself out of trouble? I doubt he got any guaranteed cash, so if he acts up you just cut him and lose relatively nothing. It's a boom or bust signing with really no significant downside for the Cowboys.

by N41D on Sep 18, 2007 4:36 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

just cut the guy if anything happens
really short leash.

but otherwise, cant say i care that much.

by DSheppard on Sep 18, 2007 5:09 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I don't have a problem with it
But lets see how good he really is without Tommy Harris playing next to him.  I have a feeling he isn't really that much of an upgrade over Ratliff.  But that will be a better situation than they have now so that's a positive.

interesting
i think his size will be good to stop the run but that's about it

Harris
Did you forget Harris was hurt last year, and didn't  play in the playoffs at all?

Johnson graded out very well last year, even when Harris was on the sideline in street clothes.

that's what i was thinking
till Tank started screwing up............

by slash on Sep 19, 2007 5:24 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Seems like a good move to me
And talk about dirt cheap. He's getting the pro-rated minimum for 5 year vet or whatever, so like half of 510k..AND the Cowboys have the option for next year.

Jerry being opportunistic again.

by Sharky on Sep 18, 2007 6:13 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I heard on radio (KRLD)
That Johnson has an opportunity to appeal, or appeal again, to reduce his suspension.  True?

by Ed Coffin on Sep 18, 2007 6:26 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

yup
but from what i've read it's not likely they reduce the suspension.
at the earliest he could come back after serving 6 games (if it gets reduced) other wise he sits out 8

Good move
Same reasons as stated above: cheap, young, talented, low risk / short leash, etc ...

Thanks, Jerry!

I do find it amusing
That Terry Glenn is out and the Cowboys offense is better than it's ever been in the first two games.

It's all about the talent...LOL.

Or that, the defense has been weaker than the offense, and we have been pouring draft picks into the defense and ignoring the offense the last several years..again just proves "talent" means nothing.

I only see three above average skill players on the Cowboy offense. Owens, Romo and Witten. Glenn is not good, Barber and Jones are not good.

Barber gets yards but, that's just because he gets the ball and somebody has to do it. He's slow.

Maybe we will get a real running back one of these days. It'll be nice.

by Sharky on Sep 18, 2007 10:45 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Oh and the backup recievers
Hurd and Crayton, dont strike me as good either.

Of course it doesn't matter, as the explosive offense playcalled by Garrett attests.

quick sharky
who was the biggest player acquisition by the cowboys in the offseason?

might that be a reason too?

He is THE reason
OL is the only thing that matters in football. QB, RB, WR, TE and the coaches are just pawns and defense is graphically generated by FOX.

Davis
I dont know about you two in particular but I remember a lot of reservations about him on LSB.

That Jerry was overpaying for a guy who'd never been to a pro-bowl.

All that's changed now after the quick start, of course.

Talent and draft pick
"Or that, the defense has been weaker than the offense, and we have been pouring draft picks into the defense and ignoring the offense the last several years..again just proves "talent" means nothing."

Do not equate high draft pick status with talent.  Just because a team thinks your talented enough to be drafted highly, doesn't mean you are.  Case in point Brady was a second day draft pick and Grossman was a first rounder.  Are you seriously telling me that Grossman is more talented then Brady because he was a first round draft pick?  I think not.

I'm not sure
what you're trying to accomplish by making a normal, rational point in response to Sharky in his football rant.

by Brett Perryman on Sep 19, 2007 6:45 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Tell you what
You take a bunch of 6th round picks, and I'll take a gaggle of 1st rounders, and we'll play a season.

How do you think that'll turn out?

I will not get my comeuppance!

by Brian Thomas on Sep 19, 2007 6:59 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Wait a minute Brian Thomas
Aren't you contradicting Derek the Red?

Oh yeah you are, LOL.

Derek the Red: Draft picks obviously dont mean talent!

Brian Thomas: Draft picks obviously mean talent! My first rounders are gonna kill your 6th rounders every time!

Zywica: Oh you guys! Stop owning sharky so much LOL!

But look, I'm just trying to make this specific point. We kept hearing that, because Terrence Newman was out, the Giants lit us up. But, this was an after the fact sort of statement. Because, Terry Glenn was missing from the offense, the offense lit it up, but nobody really talked about hey, missing Terry Glenn didn't mean a damn thing! But if the offense had sucked and the defense held NY scoreless, people would have been saying "Oh that Terry Glenn! He's so important! He's the key to the team!" AFTER the fact as always..

And sharky woulda been rolling his eyes.

And missing Terrence Newman, probably doesn't mean all that much either.

And misding Greg Ellis, just means less than nothing! Jeez, I'm so sick of hearing about that guy...

by Sharky on Sep 20, 2007 11:04 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

picks
"Derek the Red: Draft picks obviously dont mean talent!"

I never said draft picks don't mean talent.  Just that draft picks don't necessarily mean talent.  Generally speaking the higher a player is drafted the better he is.  However, there is no way to quantify talent and as such mistakes get made.  A mistake can never be caught until years later when a performance doesn't match up with a player's perceived talent.

The reason the Cowboy's offense lit it up without Glenn and the defense struggled without Newman is because they have more depth at wide receiver then cornerback.  In other words, the drop off in talent between a starting wide receiver to a back up isn't that great, but the drop off between a starting corner and a backup is.

Talent matters even in backups.  Having talented backups means the team doesn't fall apart after an injury like has happened in the past.  Remember when Flozell went down a couple years ago or Ellis last year?  The season was over pretty much after that since we had no reliable LT or OLB backup.

Oh ok
Isn't that convenient.

So you're saying, there is no objective measure of talent, besides what you say? And this judgement, can only be made after the fact?

And you're also saying, after playing four years of college, the NFL scouts cannot tell talented players from untalented ones either? So sometimes, in fact oftentimes, they draft the "wrong" ones?

I own you guys so easily on this every day, it's hilarious your nonsensical responses..

OK, if we're not equating a high draft pick with talent, what are we equating it with?

The fact is, all you want to do, is constantly fit the facts in with your theory AFTER THE FACT. I'm tired of it.

Leonard Davis sucked. But now that the Cowboys are 2-0, he's great. That's the easiest prediction in football. Somehow, you guys think this is just coincidence though. Even though, you all said he sucked two weeks ago. You forgot, though, because now clearly he's an all star, and you cant remember what you said two weeks ago, and I'm the unreasonable one.

Not one of you had a damn clue what would happen this season based on "talent". In fact most of you thought the Cowbnoys would suck and be 5-11. Of course you'll lie now and say no, no, you knew we had a lot of potential!

Talent..what a joke..The Lions had a lot of telent..sucked, same talent now 2-0. All those first round recievers did JACK. N9ow they're doing something..I guess they're talented again.

Amazing. Joey Galloway was a bum with the Cowboys. Somehow he became talented again with the Bucs. This talent is truly an amazing thing. It just turns off and on with the flick of a switch!

Raiders -- Title bound?
They don't have the most talent on offense, but who cares, talent is irrelevant.

They have Lane Kiffin! He was the OC at USC where he worked with no talent and created one of the most explosive offenses in college football!

He must be a great coach! They will win! Their OC, Tom Walsh, is probably good because through osmosis he can glean secret offensive strategies from Kiffin, who is better than Mike Martz, the best OC ever, who has been in Detroit for a couple years now!

Prediction for the record, so that you can't distort it later, Shark: Raiders - Browns in Super Bowl XLII !!!!

Well
This is obviously a dumb post.

By the way, weren't the Raiders the worst team ever last season?

How come now I already hear "Well the Raiders offense is actually showing signs of life this season!" From the pundits.

Gee that was pretty predictable..sharky might have expected something like that.. maybe cus they have a new OC?

Miles tried to tell me oh no, Jamarcus Russell doesn't wanna go the Raiders, they're so bad, they're worse than an expansion team. At that time I commented, like last season really matters..they have a new OC. They migh not be that bad, Miles.

The concept of "awful" is meaningless in the NFL if you get a new OC the next season..

So your example just once again skewers you.

More
I just looked up the Raiders schedle..I see they lost, in OT, in Denver, 23-20 last week.

Gee, that's pretty impressive loss for such a moribund team. Almost like, they have all new talent from last year..except they dont of course.

Walsh was the OC LAST year btw, not this year..and one of the worst in the NFL this side of Maurice Carthon. He was like 75..and running a bed and breakfast, and a failure Art Shell's first time around LOL.

This year Greg Knapp is listed as the OC, but I dont know if he or Kiffen actually calls plays anyway.

Knapp is a competent if uninspiring OC from what I can recall about him from a few years floating around the league..kinda like John Shoop...or pretty much the way I would have Gary Kubiak and Sean Payton pegged.

by Sharky on Sep 20, 2007 11:57 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

But I tell you what
You're right Chase Irwin, and as proof, what I'm willing to do is hire Maurice Carthon as lifetime OC  and playcaller of the Houston Texans, LOL.

Boy, Adam'd shit bricks if that were to happen..
