Jason Bay...

Rumors are circulating a bit that the Pirates may be looking to move him this offseason...He's making under 6 million next year and about 7.5 in 2009, so he's a VERY good bargain for what people have come to expect from him...Down year this year, but had knee surgery early on in the year and miss time with tendinitis...The Pirates are going to want 2 good prospects in return, with one needing to be a pitcher...

Star-divide

Bay definately fits the mold of what the Rangers are looking for. Obviously this year factors in a bit, but ignoring his slight decline in 2007, he's not really a health concern at all, he's been good for a .280 avg, 30-35 homers and a .900 OPS before this year in Pittsburgh. Very reliable defensively in LF...

He'd probably spark a bidding war if placed on the market, but if he's available, how attractive is he to you and what are you willing to give up to bring him to Arlington?

I'd be interested
He just turned 29 a week ago. Career OPS+: 129.

Harrison and Duran should get talks started ...

I think that offer
would more likely get you hung up on.

Harrison is a marginal prospect, and Duran still has some question marks.

To get a guy like Bay, even coming off a down year, it's going to take a lot more than that. He's got a pretty solid track record of success and a very reasonable contract.

I'd think BGL + Laird + Duran might be a decent conversation starter, though I doubt they'd deal him to us without getting Hurley in return.

Yah
the more I think about it, my BGL+Laird+Duran offer isn't much better.

They'd want a stud back in return.

I wouldn't give up much more than that
i think I'd rather wait till the young guys make their way up, instead of giving up as much talent as it would take

Padilla?
The Pirates have shown the willingness to take on a big contract for a bad pitcher... oh, wait, Littlefield got fired. Nevermind that idea.

what about
duran and pitcher?

Only if...
the pitcher is Hurley and that might only start talks.  I don't see the Pirates being interested unless we were talking about two premium prospects.

If its true, which I'm dubious of,
We should be on it like Longhorn on a blind date...

But you know, in this instance, a substantiating link would be nice. Especially if you start your piece out with "rumors are circulating..."

I'm still a little baffled, though. Why would the Pirates want to move a 900 OPS hitter who costs 6 or 7 mil a year?

Seriously, why?

I will not get my comeuppance!

Well
Possibly, they see what the Rangers got for 1.5 seasons of Teixeira, and think that they can get close to that for Bay, who has been mediocre this year, but was better than Teixeira the previous two years.

At the very least, they probably figure they could get a similar return to what they got for Brian Giles (Bay and Oliver Perez).

Yup
hard to find the logic in this.

IF it is true they're thinking of dealing him, it has to be either a personal issue between Bay and the Buccos, or they think Bay's struggles this year are permanent.

Meh
We're just building up our farm system.  I see no reason to gut it for a guy with bad knees.  I say wait it out and let things develop on the farm for a while.

Bay's fielding
I don't have a clue how he operates in LF. Is he good, better than good, or just OK?  BTW I see vast improvement in Jason Botts in LF, even though God isn't done with him yet.

botts
i've noticed lately that he's looking serviceable in lf.

Bay's fielding...
2004 = 2 errors in 117 games (.991 F%)
2005 = 1 error in 146 games (.996)
2006 = 3 errors in 157 games (.991)
2007 = 8 errors in 142 games (.972)

With the exception of this year, he's been very good defensively in LF...He made 3 errors in 30 games in CF during the 2005 season, but I left those out because he wouldn't be playing there in Arlington...
