9/29 College Football

Today has been interesting so far. Notre Dame started off with another loss, which makes me happy.

On to the games that actually matter.

Oklahoma loses to a not real good Colorado team. Bradford goes 8/19 for 112 yards, one TD and two picks. This is why three weeks ago I said I wanted to see what Bradford did later in the season before anointing him the greatest QB in the country. He clearly is a talented QB, but he is not the second coming of Joe Montana, at least not yet. I know his receivers didn't help him a lot with the dropped passes, but he didn't make many plays today.

Texas is once again showing that we have big deficiencies in the coaching department. The defense can't tackle, takes horrible angles and can't cover anyone. The offense has a lot of talent, but runs the same four plays over and over again. Of course the fact McCoy keeps throwing picks (although the first one was a great play by the DL and the second one was not really Colt's fault) doesn't help much either. I don't think KSU  is fast enough on defense to stop a three headed rushing attack of Chiles, McGee and Charles, which is what we may see in the second half if McCoy can't come back. Even if Texas comes back and wins, I still think we get hammered by OU next week. OU is going to be pissed and Texas hasn't shown they can play a complete game this year.

A&M also showed that Franchione selling information to boosters wasn't much of a distraction, that or maybe Baylor is just horrible.

A&M
I can't claim to know much about college football, but I do watch a lot of it.  Being an Aggie I was happy to see them win, but I think your last sentence says it all.  Baylor just isn't a good team.  I was initially very happy to see Franchione leave Alabama and go to A&M.  I've not been a booster of his, but I do lean in the direction of 'give him time'.  However, I now think that Franchione's time has come and gone.  I don't expect good things once A&M starts playing TT, t.u., or Oklahoma.

I can't believe OK lost.  Despite playing some pretty weak opponents they clearly looked like a good team (again, I'm hardly a keen observer of college football).  t.u. has looked beatable and may well lose to Kansas State today.  So just how good is the Big 12 this year?

OU lost
They looked unbeatable, that's a shocker.

Texas sucks, struggling again.

Lot of undefeated teams either getting knocked off or going to because two undefeated's play each other. I think there was like 17 undefeateds last week, and at least 5 are gonna lose today.

Miami wins lackluster 24-14, maybe we can crack top 25 this week. Were 27 last week.

There seems to be a lot more parity
In CF. It's really like any team can beat any team.

Just looking at Miami, we have all that talent but we struggle for a lot of our wins. Playing a 1-4 team doesn't matter, the game is a battle.

Special Teams
Coming into the game today I knew the Longhorns offensive and defensive coaches blew, but I liked our special teams. Of course today we have allowed a kickoff return for a TD and a punt return for a TD. Question, has an entire coaching staff ever been fired midway through the third quarter of a game? I bet the three of us that have posted on this thread could go out and get a better effort out of the Longhorns then we have seen today.

Texas and OU both played horrible
Neither of them deserve to be ranked highly anymore. Both teams have beaten up on bad schools so far (although Miami is a big name, they are not that good) and showed today what happens when you don't play anyone and then have to play a decent team. Two losses. I don't know about OU, but Texas needs to make some serious changes on the coaching staff. Of course that is nothing new, the changes have needed to happen for years.

The Big 12
Absolutely atrocious this year. This is turning in a consistently pretty crappy conference.

April 14, 2003
I would be much more nervous about that date than the SID getting pissed at me, if I were him.

Dealer's Choice...
"Bradford goes 8/19 for 112 yards, one TD and two picks."

Or:

McCoy was 19-of-39 for 200 yards, one TD and four picks (plus one jammed shoulder and one concussion).

Wow, those teasips got Tea Bagged, huh?

No, I'm not a Sooner fan. But damn, u.t. was outplayed in every phase of the game by KSU!

WTF
are you taliking about? Seriously, I don't get it.

I was comparing the two longtime-rival programs' QB's performance.

Mebbe I should stick to low end prime number addition, or coloring books? I don't want to confuse...

you bashing texas, then claiming to not be a sooner fan. Then you say that your night improved immeasurably, bah, perhaps I'm not on your level yet (or ever) ...

Unless you're Vince Young
it's going to be a tad difficult to make a Greg Davis run offense look aesthetically pleasing.

A one word summation: PREDICTABLE.

What amazes me
is that Texas only runs five or six plays, but they can't even run those plays well. If you have as simple a playbook as Davis has, the team should have flawless execution. I remember when Mike Leach said he has less than ten plays, but teams are unable to stop them because they run them perfectly every time. Davis has to go, but since he has been Mack's buddy for 30 or so years I doubt anything will happen.

Greg Davis Playbook
Zone read (with a slow, white QB)
Swing pass to RB
Screen Pass to RB
WR Screen
Quick slant
Five yard pass to TE
If anyone else can think of another play, you have a better memory than me.

Offense
yeah, davis stopped looking like a genius when Vince went to the NFL. also didnt help that they lost blalock from the oline  as well.

the offense they run is not taking advantage of colt mccoys skills, and honestly i believe colt may very well have been more seriously injured last season than we may think

McCoy
While he never had a strong arm, his arm now is horrendous. I am starting to think the reason they never throw down field is because he can't get the ball there. If you watch him throw 10-15 yard passes, the ball just floats in there. That is one of the reasons he has thrown 122,345,234 interceptions this year. He was clearly hurt today. It think it was after the third pick, he just looked completely lost on the bench. Like he had no idea where he was. He looked the same way against Arky State. I don't know what it is, but he gets hurt every game now and his skill set, which was always limited, is now virtually non-existent.

by uthornfan on Sep 29, 2007 7:52 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

yeah
i really think he got hurt much worse last season than was said, plus he's made of glass or something and gets hurt every freaking game. what sucks is because of mccoy snead xfered out

Colt....
....After we lose to OU next week do you think Mack will sack McCoy.   I hope so.  I'm a afraid it's going to turn into a Wrecks Grossman situation in Austin.

Nope
What in your history of watching a Mack Brown coached team leads you to believe he would make that change? With the exception of the whole Applewhite/Simms debacle, he never changes a veteran for a rookie. If he did, Robert Killibrew would be so far down on the depth chart he would have to but a ticket to the games. Muckleroy and Norton are animals, and they can't ever get onto the field. Bobino and Derry are bad, but Killibrew is horrenous. Why do the three of them start?

Also, while McCoy hasn't been good this year, the larger problem is Greg Davis. Until he is gone, or we recruit another Vince Young (and I don't just mean a black QB, I mean a player so dominant that no one can stop him) we will continue to have a crappy offense.

Um...
see Young, Vince in for Mock, Chance

by mstang20 on Oct 1, 2007 3:24 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Sort of similar
The difference is that Mock was not really an established starter. He started about three games before Vince took over. Players like Killebrew have started for two or three years (although I have no idea why) and I fear that no change will be made because of that. We are talking about a coaching staff that started Montrell Flowers over Roy Williams in 2000 and only made a change after OU beat Texas by half a hundred. Even if the staff does eventually bench scrubs like Killebrew and Derry, it will more than likely be after Texas loses enough games this year that they are out of contention for any meaningful title.
