Some ugly starts so far today...
Bonderman gets knocked out in the 2nd...

Dumatrait gives up homers to the first 3 batters he faces against the Brewers, and is yanked after 5 batters (and no outs)...

King Felix gives up 4 in the 1st...

by Adam J. Morris on Sep 9, 2007 1:02 PM CDT reply actions

Oh, and Dontrelle...
...gives up 5 in the first...now with a 5.23 ERA on the season...

Anyone still think we should give up the farm to trade for him?

by Adam J. Morris on Sep 9, 2007 1:03 PM CDT up reply actions

No, but I would give up Laird for him

bah
botts cruz and laird all in a row.  wish there was a way to spread out the suckiness but jhj had to join as well.

by kumar75150 on Sep 9, 2007 1:36 PM CDT reply actions

Cruz
Give up on Cruz already. I know he sucks, Wash knows he sucks, everybody knows he sucks. Just throw a breaking ball low and away and you will make this guy look stupid. Just put Byrd in right and get Hunter, Rowand, Jones or whoever you want but just stop giving this guy chances

Actually today
Cruz just took a breaking ball low and away to the opposite field.

Show them what our Sunday lineups can do!!

Spare 'em to death, JHJ!!

It is the lefty
Cat, Blalock, Murphy and Vazquez are all going to sit with a lefty on the mound.

So with those guys unavailable, this is the sort of lineup we get.

by Adam J. Morris on Sep 9, 2007 2:05 PM CDT up reply actions

You could still
bury JHJ at the bottom of our order though, instead of having him make all those outs in front of the RBI machine ...

Blalock
Sitting against the lefty because he's still recuperating?

I though Wash was kind of famously outspoken about playing Hank against whomever...

that was an unbearable 30 minutes before I brought in my emergency car charger to plug in a fan.

glad the delay made me miss less of the game.

granderson
congrats to curtis granderson.  he stole his 20th base this year.  he becomes the 3rd person in history to get 20 doubles, 20 triples, 20 homers and 20 stolen bases in 1 season.

http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news;_ylt=ApwubFxqqFc67Vh3BxMVOVARvLYF?slug=ap-tigers-granderson&pro v=ap&type=lgns

the other 2?

willie mays in 1957 (50 years ago)
frank schulte in 1911 (96 years ago)

it's rare to get 20 triples now though, probably about once ever 5 to 8 years i guess.

of the 3, granderson will have the lowest OPS+ on the season (mays had 173 and schulte had 156)

granderson will end up with more doubles on the season than either of them, more triples than either of them,  he is currently 1 HR behind schulte for 2nd, and 4 stolen bases behind schulte for 2nd.

certainly granderson should get some consideration for top 5 mvp? oh yeah...a top 2 mvp is on his team (ordonez).

It's funny that
Andrus is taller than the power hitters, Whittleman and Ramirez.  Here's hoping those shoulders develop some power.

Also, that airliner is terrifying, and deafening to the people on that road, I'd have to imagine.

who else is going to pitch today

by meatbonelefty on Sep 9, 2007 4:03 PM CDT reply actions

Well...
Murray is probably not available.

Wood is probably available for an inning or two.

Feldman and White could pitch a couple of innings each.

Okay
Frankie isn't throwing strikes.

This is going to get ugly.

i would be just fine if they signed him to be play vs lefties.

not enough at bats to worry about getting a young player a bit of time, should contribute with that time, and is popular with fans.

certainly nothing worth boycotting over...

Swisher's pants
The TV crew was talking about Swisher having a bad first game of the series and changing how he wears his pants.

Didn't he shave between innings earlier this year?

by Inkara1 on Sep 9, 2007 4:42 PM CDT reply actions

Interesting question
Starter didn't go five innings... next guy pitched like crap but made it through four outs... team scores eight runs in that span... is Francisco going to be credited for the win if the Rangers hold the lead?

by Inkara1 on Sep 9, 2007 4:59 PM CDT reply actions

I doubt it
The key is pitching effectively, which he obviously didn't do.

by uthornfan on Sep 9, 2007 5:01 PM CDT up reply actions

So now...
Feldman isn't pitching effectively either. At this rate, Benoit will pitch the 9th and get the win.

by Inkara1 on Sep 9, 2007 5:19 PM CDT up reply actions

Want a win?
If anyone in the bullpen wants a win, it looks like all they are going to have to do is come in and throw strikes. Eight walks now between Feldman and Frankie.

by uthornfan on Sep 9, 2007 5:23 PM CDT up reply actions

El Gringo is warming up
Could this be White's first MLB win?

by Inkara1 on Sep 9, 2007 5:25 PM CDT up reply actions

White
Well, he has been the most effective reliever so far. He would almost certainly get the win over Frankie and Feldman if the game were to end right now.

by uthornfan on Sep 9, 2007 5:52 PM CDT up reply actions

Word
He was the first pitcher not named Millwood to end an inning without the bases loaded.

by Inkara1 on Sep 9, 2007 5:53 PM CDT up reply actions

White vs. Rheineker
Well, White was more effective than Rheineker as well. Looks like the gringo may get the win.

by uthornfan on Sep 9, 2007 6:44 PM CDT up reply actions

Frankie
55 pitches and 5 walks in 1 1/3 IP.

Feldman now with 2 walks.

This is annoying.

Looked like it was hit well off the bat...
...but died out there, for a fairly easy out...

Not sure if it sounded better than it turned out to be, or if the ball just isn't carrying out there...

by Adam J. Morris on Sep 9, 2007 6:01 PM CDT up reply actions

yeah
it was hit pretty hard but with no wind that direction it was an easy out. Had there been more when that might have gone for a double or a hr.

good god, man...
... this bullpen has looked pretty shady lately...

by oc on Sep 9, 2007 6:52 PM CDT reply actions

Bullpen
All the games early in the season when our starting pitchers only lasted three innings are probably starting to catch up to us. The bullpen has thrown a ton of innings this year, even guys like Benoit and Wilson who have been great all year are struggling lately.

by uthornfan on Sep 9, 2007 7:50 PM CDT up reply actions

good call...
... but keep in mind, half of the guys out in the pen weren't there in the early months...

bill white, rheinecker, jamey wright, mike wood, a.j. murray...

most of those guys have been playing all year... most in the minors, and some as starters...

but, still... you'd think in a relief role, since you're not working your arm as much, you'd be a little more effective...

by oc on Sep 9, 2007 7:56 PM CDT up reply actions
