Around SBN: BTB's Final Preseason NCAA Hoops Bracket

Wednesday a.m. things

T.R. Sullivan has a new Around the Horn up, featuring the outfield, and providing some stats to help illustrate exactly how bad the Rangers' outfield production has been this century.

Sullivan says that the Rangers are looking at a Byrd/Hamilton/Bradley starting outfield, and while that's the best defensive outfield they've had in a long time, I don't think Byrd's bat is going to be good enough for him to play every day in left field.

And Evan Grant's #4 Ranger prospect is Michael Main...

Damn,
I was really hoping Main might be 1 or 2 on his list.  But still at number four this kids gonna be good.

The outfield, yes, is great defensivly.  Byrd probably wont be a hitting machine.  So why again isn't Murph at least platooning with him in left?  Did no one besides me see that he has some serious potential?  We don't need HR slappy happy players anymore.  And I'm suprised Wash isn't in love with him.  Singles and doubles are his specialty, in the short glimpse I got from him last season.

Fourth outfielder, yes.  But he should get a fair shot at left because Byrd is also a good fourth outfielder.

the Murph will ..

get plenty of at bats J J. I'm not worried about that. As Evan Grant said in the past "David Murphy is a perfect match for Rudy Jaramillo". He will continue to get better and better.

options
Murphy is one of the only players with options left and therefore will go down to start the season most likely.

by JKolar on Jan 23, 2008 11:49 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Either way,
you have a very solid player in Murph.  Aguy who can play all three spots and has some pop in the bat.  But I'd imagine that if Byrd is still here, he would go into the 4of role, being that he can play all three spots.  If and when he leaves or goes down, then Murph would be called up.

But I really want Murph to be on this team.  Perfect example of the players Wash is trying to esemble.

JD on MLBTR
Tim Dierkes asked MLBTradeRumors readers to submit questions for Jon Daniels. He'll be answering 5 or 6 of those in the near future. I asked, so maybe we'll be able to find out, how the Rangers are allowed to have 41 men on the 40 man roster for the time being.

JMJ
J.D. - "This is a big year for him. He's going to have the opportunity to be challenged and we'll see how he responds."

So, is J.D. thinking about putting Mayberry at OKC and telling him to make us want to call you up?  I don't think of AA as a "challenge" in the way J.D. sounds like he's using it here and with Boggs later in the article.

by shroomer on Jan 23, 2008 10:08 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

I think if anyone has a shot at making that
jump JMJ is the guy.  He has some serious potential.  Some things still need to get tweeked, but he would only benefit from making that jump.

I get intrigued by Boggs.  Where does he start the season? Could you see him in Arlington playing center and Hamilton in right?

FWIW
I think we will see a platoon of Byrd(Murton?)and Murphy in LF.

I hope Main starts out in Clinton. Beaven then could move into Main's rotation spot when he moves up to Bakersfield. (I know, I am being overly optimistic.)

I think JMJ starts in Frisco with a quick call up to OKC.

Rotation in 2011
It would be nice to have a starting five in 2011 that looks something like this:
  1. Hurley
  2. Harrison
  3. Kiker
  4. Main
  5. Beavan
Most likely, at MOST, 3 of those 5 will end up as viable options but it would still look pretty nice.  Diamond, Feliz, Poveda, Font, Castillo, Phillips, Hunter, Ramirez - pretty nice to know that we've got quite a crop coming up in the future - and if we luck out and most of these guys pan out, we'll have a pretty damn solid home-grown bullpen in addition

You think it's Feliz?  I kind of picture Felize setting up for Diamon, like Rivera-Wettland or (briefly) K-Rod-Percival.

Definitely Feliz is the closer.
If the Rangers develop him as a reliever, I would bet he could be in the majors in the 2009 season.

Based solely on what people have said

What no BGR?
If he turns out to be the player everyone hopes, I think he will be here for a long time, like BGL.  I really think that Beavan goes down with an arm injury, and I'm not saying that to be an ass.  I really hope he doesn't.

Main has the chance to be converted to an outfielder if he doesn't pan out.  Either way, he is the star of that class.

Kiker, I feel, has the best shot at being dominant.  A classy guy who works hard and has all the right stuff to succeed.  We might see him sooner than 2011.

Harrison and Hurley we should see be the end of the year.

That being said,  I would love to see this rotation right now, BGR, BGL, Hurley, Harrison, and Gabbard.  Stellar if you ask me.

And I'm sorry BGL for writing you into the top five but you are the best pitcher we have right now.  You should be starting even though you look awesome coming out of the pen.

will be much improved in the outfield this year.  That's one reason I'm slightly optimistic the rotation will be at least average if they're healthy.

if Bradley is really healthy
then that OF should be stellar defensively. I've wondered many times in the last few years how much better the pitching would look if the OF defense was better. Looks like we will find out, and I wouldn't be surprised if it makes a huge difference.

And you heard it here first -- Milton Bradley has a career year, stays healthy, loves Texas, and signs an extension.

Bradley wont be back for opening day as an OFer
he just wont.  no friggin way.  and when he does come back it will take a while to get his defense back up to speed.  These ppl who are expecting a huge improvemnt are gonna be disappointed.  I have no doubt josh will be fantastic in OF, and if Bradley comes back 100% at some point we will be a pretty good fielding OF but, i dont think MB coming back and being in ST and fielding and all like nothing happened, well, it just aint gonna happen.  i hope every1 realizes this, or at least keeps it in mind.

I'm not sure
you realize just how truly great Manuel Aristides  Ramirez is.

Check his stats.

He's a career .313/.409/.593 hitter. That's an OPS north of 1.000. I mean... DAMN, that's incredible. He's one of the truly great hitters of our generation. He has a career ops+ of 154. Last year he had a horrible year by his standards and still nearly had a .900 ops.

Look, I love Milton Bradley. If you go back and check my comments you'll see he was the guy I wanted to go after all off season as a COF (although most people around here only remember my obsession with Corey Patterson as a BORP/CF-option). But he's simply not in Man-Ram's class as a hitter.

Check Bradley's stats. He's the kind of guy who's a threat to hit .300/.400/.500, which is very good, and certainly better than anything we've gotten out of our OF in a long time.

But it ain't Manny.

You're comparing an all-star to a no-doubt HOF'er, imo.

Its a fair statement
Mannys career numbers are .313/ .409/ .513

He was saying Bradley has the potential to put up those numbers in a season not for his career. And he is correct in that statement.

2003  .321/ .421/ .501
2007  .306/ .402/ .545

Yes he was injured last year and has been throughout his career but it is accurate to say that Bradley could put up numbers comparable to Manny Ramirez. Will he...probably not....but he could and if he does he will be a great addition to the club.

In the 2 years you bring up he played a total of 162 games.  So you took Bradley's absolute best years that happened to be only really half seasons to compare to Manny's AVERAGE year.  So no, it's not accurate to say he could put up numbers comparably to Manny.  Just for fun, lets look at Manny's 2 best years.

2000 .351/.457/.697
2002 .349/.450/.647

I didn't want to start a diary, and risk the wrath of Chase <j/k>.

"jromero (Seattle): What's PECOTA's take on the players Cincy and Texas swapped? (Josh Hamilton is one; can't recall the pitcher's name who came to Cincy.) Thanks!

Nate Silver: Well, PECOTA's quite optimistic on Hamilton, but that's one of those cases where PECOTA can't really tell you much of anything. There's no precedent to go on and barely even a decent sample size's worth of data, and he gets a good projection because what data we do have on him is good. Still, though, I think that was a fairly dubious trade by the Reds."

They'd probably ask for Teagarden
And probably an arm as well. My guess? Teagarden and Gabbard would prolly get it done.

He's not a good fit for us at all, so I'm not interested at all.

But if he's on the block some team will trade for him and end up overpaying for a guy who posted a sub-4 ERA and a 113 ERA+, but had very shaky peripherals (1.51 WHIP, 87 bb in only 156 ip, and doesn't K very many).

But he's a young left-handed pitcher who's had some success at the big league level, so someone will pay for him if he's available.

Well
the idea of him being dealt has been floated a few times.

He's an incredible talent, but his size and his violent arm action have led some to theorize he's prone for a big break down.

There's been some sentiment that the Giants should deal him now, at the apex of his value.

I think they keep him and build around him and Cain.

I'm just saying it's not preposterous to think he could dealt.

I had seen rumors..
about him being dealt and did not understand why.  You are probably right about his arm action, it is unusual and probably scares the Giants.

I read an article on Lincecum last year about how he never ices his arm.  It mentions how his dad blames most pitching injuries on shitty teaching by pitching coaches at all levels.  Apparently, they both have been studying tape of him (Lincecum) since he started pitching to prevent injury.

Ditto...
That's the same stuff I've heard about why the Giants might consider dealing him.

But those just turned out to be rumors though... everything I've read lately says he's staying put. Which is too bad, really... if the Giants offered me Lincecum for Hurley, Teagarden and maybe a third prospect like German Duran or Engel Beltre, I'd do that deal. Hurley is gonna be good, but not as good as Lincecum will be... and Teagarden and Duran are currently blocked by Salty and Kinsler.

Minor League Ball
Start poking around Minor League Ball, and you will see all sorts of stuff about a future injury and Lincecum.  I can't say for sure if any of this is true or not, but it makes you wonder.  At the very least, I would rather bet on Lincecum than Liriano.

Never ices his arm
heard those sort of legends about Colt Griffin, too.

Not comping the two, obviously.

I've seen several breakdowns of Lincecum's mechanics that say they're basically perfect... but they still make people nervous just cause his arm moves so damn fast. Nothing you can really do about that. People will be talking about how he's one pitch away from TJ surgery his entire career.

Wow, great link...
That's some really cool stuff. Is there an anylasis of CJ Wilson's mechanics like that anywhere?

Never seen one of Chris-John
But maybe you could get Mr. Gomez to do one in his next feature if you e-mail him. That'd be fun.

If you're interested in that sort of thing (like I am) he breaks down guys in a similar fashion semi-regularly for TheHardBallTimes.

Here's a link to his archive. Carlos Zambrano, Peavy, Phil Hughes, Cain... he does quite a few, and they're all interesting reads, though he can come off sort of know-it-all-ish at times.

I wish things like that were available back when I was having trouble with my pitching mechanics back in high school. I still would've sucked, but maybe a little less so:)

Thanks...
I do find that stuff interesting, becuase... well it's interesting. And CJ's got one of the funkiest follow-through's I've ever seen. I don't know how he snaps that leg over like he does - it must be from all that yoga.

lol
Well said. I totally agree. That sort of analysis is interesting.

I wish there was more of that from the heavyweights. The ESPN's and the like. They have the resources to hire people with genuine insight into the game, and can provide those people with the means to disseminate that knowledge to us in impressive and interesting ways.

But when I watch baseball tonight I always seem to end up hearing shit like John Kruk and Steve Phillips debating, "Who's the grittier SS, Eckstein or Jeter?"

I feel like I'm getting dumber every time I turn that show on.

Thank Jeebus for the blogosphere.

odd...
...i brought up this same topic in a blog several weeks ago... and everybody seemed to disagree with me...

"...he's had that delivery for YEARS, and never suffered a major injury because of it..."

"...his delivery is very compact, see... it's not like he's flailing all around... you have no idea what you're talking about, oc..."

...but, then you say it, dirk... and everyone suddenly agreeeeeees...

how odd, wouldn't you say?

Lincecum is the kind of guy you deal for
Miguel Cabrera and Dontrelle Willis, not Hurley and Blalock.

Perhaps one but not both...
of Cabrera or Willis. My point was that you don't give up 2 of Salty, Davis, Andrus, and Kinsler for Lowry. You don't even do Kinsler or Salty for Lowry straight up. If you are giving up 2 of those players you better get more than just Lowry.

Jaret Wright signs with the Pirates,
funny how a former 15 game winner is now making 800,000.  Kinda backs the point up that the Evil Empire doesn't always make the right decision.
