Celtics for real?
So with tonight's win the Celtics are now 28-3. This is the best start for any team since the shot-clock era began.
I realize they have played a soft schedule so far and have yet to play the elite in the West (Dallas, San Antonio, and Phoenix) but this team is for real. I think they are easily in the top 5 in the NBA right now with those 3 Wetern teams and the Pistons.
They have found a few bench players in Posey, House, Tony Allen, and Big Baby. Their defense has been great, and watching the "PGA Tour" has been a lot of fun. They did go 4-0 on a recent west-coast trip including wins over the Lakers and the Jazz as well.
I am not saying they will win it all. In fact I think they will lose in the Eastern Confrence finals to Detroit, but for the first time in over a decade watching the NBA is a option for me. I know there are a lot of Dallas fans here but I'm curious as to what you think. There is also a poll on you right as to how far you think this team will go.

i had my doubts
as long as there are no injuries to the big 3...i see them winning 65.
i see them making it at least to the eastern conference finals.
i'm not sure dallas is an elite team anymore.

Area's of concern for me...
I really like Rondo but he's not consistent enough yet. House is really a 2-guard off the bench.
I think Dallas is still elite, top 5, I did think they would do better than they have so far but there is a lot of season left and I see them going on a large roll eventually.

hope so
they aren't gonna be the 1 or 2 seed it looks like. so it's likely they'll have to face the suns AND the spurs in the playoffs again.
supposedly avery is real close to finding a lineup and sticking with it. please, dear god, stop starting eddie jones. and go ahead and dump juwon howard.

What I want...
Terry, Diop, 2 1st round picks expiring KVH contract for Redd, and Gazuric
Lineup
Harris
Redd
Howard
Dirk
Damp

Michael Redd is worth way more than that.

Two late first rounders
There's usually one or two teams willing to literally sell you a late first round pick if you want one.
And any deal where you get Terry back is not exactly salary relief.
If they're gonna deal Redd they're gonna want at least one good young player or complete and total salary relief.
You'd get laughed at for that deal if you proposed it.

if you think they're not elite now
Eddie Jones is the best option as a starting 2 guard for this team...he CAN hit threes, keeping defenses from doubling as much on Dirk and J-Ho, and he plays a lot better defense than most on this team, which is actually saying something these days
I'd rather start Harris, J-Ho at the 2, Dirk and Bass at the 3 and 4, and Damp at the 5 in some circumstances, but in most cases give me Jones at the 2, allowing Terry, Stackhouse and Bass to be key impacts of the bench on offense and George, Hassell and Diop on defense

They have no bench with players that will wear down by the time playoffs come...

i know they don't have depth
paul pierce is averaging 38:17 minutes a game. that's slightly above his career average.
kevin garnett is averaging 35:06 minutes a game. that's the fewest since his rookie year.
ray allen is averaging 38:17. that's the fewest since 2002/2003.
rondo's 31 minutes shouldn't kill him.
house's 19 minutes shouldn't kill him.
posey's 22 minutes are a career low.
add to that the fact that when the season winds down and they have playoff seeding locked up, they'll rest the 3 amigos more.

Garnett's a rock
Allen and Pierce have both missed significant time in the last year...so you have to take that into account. I think this team could survive an Allen injury and still make it pretty deep into the playoffs if not the finals, but if Pierce or Garnett go down, they're done

Yah because you HAVE to have good depth
Either that or you need a human being so perfect that he's capable of falling down nine times and getting up ten times.
Have ever watched the playoffs, Miles?
Depth matters zero percent.
It's all about having marketable stars capable of keeping a game close enough so the league has a chance to Bavetta it, and having those marketable stars healthy.

If Ainge somehow gets Andre Miller, there is no reason for any other team to show up against them, just go ahead and get ready for next year...

by Longhorn on Jan 4, 2008 9:49 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Oh I have...
Glenn Davis will hold up I am sure.. I mean its even hard for athletic college players to hold up an entire season because of the number of games more in the NBA.
Glenn Davis?
Right before the playoffs you will see Glenn Davis passed out because if he gets up he will die.
He will be saying "mmm donuts, get me some more god damned donuts!"
Posey? He doesn't amount to anything.
And we know how SHITTY Eddie House is in the playoffs, or atleast I do!

I realize that their bench...
For example tonight Ray Ray only had 2 points (in the final minute on FT's and was 0-9 from the field). Tony Allen scored 20 pts, Posey had 9 pts and 10 boards, and House chipped in 8. That is a pretty solid bench effort...all be it against the Griz.
You're argument about the bench, although a concern, is over-exaggerated.

Until they start to win some tough games on the
Their bench sucks, and even though their big 3 have always played a ton of minutes, that doesn't mean they didn't wear down in previous seasons as well. They'll now just do it all on the same team.

The Mavs had great starts like this the past years but that doesn't mean that they will win the damned championship.
So the 40 percent that voted that they would win the championship are misinformed.
You think they could beat even the Suns in a 7 game series?

Real
That said, real as in NBA Title real? No. Look at the teams they play, they get burned by dominant big men and good point guards. Most of the Western contenders have dominant low post bigmen or good point guards or both. I don't see how you can look at a matchup that involves Steve Nash or Tony Parker vs. Rajon Rondo and not expect coaches to exploit it for all its worth.
Also, the minutes do add up. 38 minutes per game might be the norm for players who were always "the man" on their team and playing for teams fighting to make the playoffs, but it's not really conducive to a long playoff season. Look at it this way, if you do make the finals, you'll most likely have played about 1/4 of the regular season . Even If you only play 4 games every round, that's 16 games. That's a lot of games, and the heavy minutes build up, especially for players in their 30s. It's part of the reason why Detroit fell apart last year, it's part of the reason that Dallas wore down, and it's why Phoenix always seems to run out of gas. Those minutes add up, and the Celts are playing ridiculous minutes for a team who is blowing teams out.

With the East Incredibly Weak ...
So a few on their bench have intermittent good games? OK, let's see them sustain that with playoff intensity for two months ... How much deep playoff experience do these guys have? How many playoff contenders from the West have they faced yet to get a gauge on how they matchup up against real teams with a solid post presence or a true PG who can light it up?
They are real until proved otherwise, but I think that time to be proved is soon ...

The regular season matters ...
Playoff savvy and being used to the increased play and intensity matters more than the regular season, imho. Your opponent is going to bring it harder than the regular season and you have to be ready to do the same. Boston may be ready but I doubt they can match the intensity and familiarity with each other that say a Spurs team would have.
I am just not ready to crown them yet.
