Ben Broussard gets a one year deal

The Rangers have agreed with Ben Broussard on a one year contract.  Evan Grant says it is a $3.85 million base, with another $150K in incentives possible based on plate appearances.

Broussard made $3.55 million last year with the M's, so this is probably a little less than he could have gotten in arbitration, although there may have been an understanding reached between the Rangers and Broussard prior to them offering him arbitration about what the parameters of a deal would be.

Meh...
I think I would still start Shelton at 1B.

Yuck...
I wish Daniels would take a few minutes and explain just what they see in this guy, and why they think he's better than Shelton.  Furthermore, why they think that he will do anything more than Botts would have done?

How about...
...catching the ball at 1B when thrown from across the diamond?  Saw Botts at 1B in Surprise two years ago and he literally missed throws from SS/3B.

Nah
Kevin Reimer.

As for why Botts isn't in the mix at first base, JD said that he has some back problems that would be worse off at first than in the outfield or DH.

Shelton
I would ask him what they see in Shelton. I think Broussard has done much better than Botts and will continue to do so.

Both Shelton and Broussard
...are short term stopgaps until Davis is ready, aren't they?  Both guys acquired for "nothing".  Doesn't seem to be something to be too concerned about.  Cost us Guzman and Hulett - 4A players.  Let them play it out in Surprise or over the course of the season, and then step aside when CD is ready.

AZranger
Knows what he is talking about.  Both those guys are average at best.  Broussard is light years ahead of Shelton.  Shelton couldn't even stay in the bigs last year (he had one good month two years ago, and basically against the Rangers).  And all the Tigers had was Sean Casey.  I'm just hoping we keep Botts over Shelton!!!!

Davis will be the next 1st baseman unless Teagarden beats him to the bigs and forces Salty to 1st base and Davis to the Corner OF.  Which may be the best case scenario.  It sux to talk about 2009, but that's what we're forced to do:
C  Teagarden
1B  Salty
2B  Kinsler
3B  Blalock
SS  Andrus ?????
LF  Davis
CF  Young ?????  (Could be the best for the club)
RF  Hamilton
DH  Cat / Botts

Rotation:  Millwood, Padilla, McCarthy, Gabbard, Hurleya and one of:  Mendoza, Galarraga, Harrison, etc

Pen:  Closer Diamond????, Set Up - Wilson and Benoit.  Francisco, Rheinecker, Littleton and Loe.

Don't laugh at my predictions, just day-dreaming about 09', b/c that might be all we can do unless some guys have some CAREER years.......

by Coach on Jan 5, 2008 8:45 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

WTF?
You would move Hamilton to RF and put Young in CF?

What makes people think Young would be a good CF?

Miles officially fully endorses Mike Huckabee.

Davis
He is slow, but has a great arm.  If you move him to a COF, you'd put him in RF.

No way Michael Young would be a better defensive CF'er than Hamilton.

did you even look at his stats?
he had a .870 ops for the entirity of 2005

not too shabby, especially as a righty in detroit.

man
...............im not gonna go through with the list of things, but leave Salty at the plate or trade him,

Infielder to OF
If you're going to move an infielder to the OF, it's Kinsler... he's got more potential to put up OF offensive numbers as well.  Then Young to 2B if Andrus is ready, though 2010 seems more likely.

Broussard
Broussard is a rental, for sure, and not a bad one. But what's with that incentive plan? $150K on a contract of almost $4M?

What kind of incentive is a 4 percent bonus?

Shelton
Is somebody really bringing up Shelton's stats from 05?

There's been several all-star infielders move to the outfield w/ success.  Maybe leave Hamilton in CF, Young in LF and Davis in RF?

As far as Salty behind the plate, Teagarden is the better defensive catcher!!!!!!  And if Salty can hit, there should be no problem keeping both and making him the 1B.

On the real, I really doubt this is how things pan out, again, just daydreaming.........

by Coach on Jan 6, 2008 9:14 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

Teagarden
You're ready to put Salty at 1B based on what Teagarden might be in two years?  Based on that logic, let's make all the current pitchers relievers, the Rangers have a lot of great starter prospects in the minors.

what on earth are you talking about
you specifically acted as if he had never had any success outside of one month in 06.

so i mentioned he had significant success in 05.  oh god, how ridiculous!

What did Shelton do last year?
or really ever done.  And before we talk about how great of a catcher Salty is over Teagarden.  Salty hasn't proven just a whole lot at the major league level either.  But, you guys tend to over-react to any and everything.  Hell, I hope both Salty and Teagarden are good.  Both could hit, but both could miss!  Shelton will miss.......Whom would you rather have on the roster?  Shelton or Botts?

there is a [reply to this] button under each post

i didnt say shelton was great last year, obviously he wasnt in the majors.  if he had torn up the league for 3 consecutive years he wouldnt have been free.

ben "lightyears ahead" broussard didnt do anything last year either, besides be a well below average 1b in platoon time.

shelton career ops in majors: .825
broussard career ops in majors: .786

even if you say sample size and say they have been roughly the same, shelton is also much cheaper, under club control much longer, younger, and doesnt need to be platooned.

you can have whatever opinion you want, but dont try to say what im saying is somehow ridiculuos without making an actual argument.

by DSheppard on Jan 6, 2008 2:01 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

ok
let's agree that they both suck and neither is a long term answer?

As for stats, Broussard has 2000 career AB's to Shelton's 800.  He's 4 years older, so that's about 300 ab's per season.  But, there's probably a reason that he has stuck around longer?  He's considered decent by the MLB execs.

As for being cheaper, that means nothing to me, as Hicks is saving 8 million over Broussard from Tex as it is.  We're not a small market team!
