Offensive Production by Position

I like looking at this table every season, so thought I'd put it in a fanpost.

This is the Equivilent Average put up by each position this season, along with a player who closely approximates that production. Below each position is the EqA put up by the player who led his position in Runs Above Replacement Player and the player who was the worst by the same number.

Essentially: this is how good the average offensive player was at each position, along with who was the best and worst in baseball.

Also, since this is a Rangers board, I included the player at each position who spent the most time there as a Ranger this year and some Rangers numbers at the bottom.

Full EqA numbers for all of baseball can be found here.

Three Notes

1) Unsurprisingly, the Rangers’ EqA was the best of any team in baseball.

2) Marlon Byrd is not on that list, but he finished 5th on the team in Runs Above Position Replacement with 26.7 and had a .297 EqA. That’s 8th among MLB center fielders.

3) In his incredibly short time in the majors, Taylor Teagarden broke in to the top 20, for the entire season, in RARP among catchers with 9.2 runs. That’s 4 runs behind Gerald Laird and 5.3 behind Ivan Rodriguez. 0.2 runs ahead of Rod Barajas. He had an AWESOME .369 EqA. Obviously he would have come down to earth with more time in the majors, but still. I’m very, very excited.

Interestingly to us, on the RARP list for catchers, the five of the six spots from 17-22 include Pudge (17), Laird (18), Teagarden (20), Barajas (21) and Gregg Zaun (22).

Am I missing something?

Both Hamilton and Kinsler have higher EqA than the respective leaders in the categories, how does it work? Did they not spend enough time at the position to qualify?

Oh yeah, and poor Corky

It's the EqA put up by the leader in RARP.

I do it that way for two reasons. The first is that it’s an easy way to factor in sample size. The second is that that’s how BP sorts it and I’m lazy.

Sabermetric Stats..

What’s the best website to go to for a list and explanation of all the sabermetric statistics?

Also good. . .

Sabermetric Wiki

It’s run primarily by Tom Tango, one of the premier baseball researchers in the biz and an active poster at Baseball Fever. A few others of us from there pitch in.

Also, the site you get the stat from is pretty helpful unless it’s Baseball Prospectus. They’re not good at explaining their own stuff.
