Around SBN: Are The Orioles Bad Or Unlucky With Their Young Pitching?

Friday a.m. things

A little bit out there on the coaching staff situation this morning...

Jackie Moore says he hasn't been contacted by the Rangers about a job on their coaching staff, despite rumors that he's a hot candidate for the job.  He's currently one of the Astro coaches.

Jeff Wilson says that Jon Daniels will be conducting interviews next week, and that he has not contacted any other team for permission to talk to one of their coaches.

You’re the GM!

I’m psyched to see how this turns out.

Go Strangers.

I joined up over there just now for that

And come to find out they have that F’ing one-day delay crap in place.

I probably should have officially joined over there a long time ago, as I refer over there pretty fequently when looking up other teams prospescts, so I suppose it’s really sort of my own fault but still… frustrating.

John had to do that

There was someone who was trolling in a very offensive and ugly fashion, over a period of months…he finally had to install the one-day delay system basically to deal with that one guy.

Ah

That’s unfortunate. Now that you mention it, I do remember hearing that he was having problems earlier this year, but I didn’t know it was that bad… sheesh.

one day delay

something that maybe should be considered here?

True this blog doesn’t have the trolling his did, but it might not hurt to implement that here. Maybe cut down on all the sockpuppets

One guy suggests

Adrian Beltre at 3B for us after we trade Blalock and Duran for him. Must be a Mariner’s fan.

Beltre

What exactly is the fascination with beltre? Good defense, bad contract, streaky offense. Does that about sum it up?

If Beltre is the best we could do, I’d rather stick with Davis at 3rd and take the inevitable defensive drop-off…

What's the rumpus?

by Hypo-Luxa on Oct 10, 2008 11:08 AM CDT up reply actions

Beltre

All 2008 stats only

Beltre: .266/.327/.457, OPS+ 109, (556 ABs)
Blalock: .287/.338/.508, OPS+ 121 (258 ABs) (I realize he probably won’t be able to play any 3b in 2009)
Davis: .285/.331/.549, OPS+ 129 (295 ABs)
Duran: .231/.275/.350, OPS+ 65 (143 ABs)
Young: .284/.339/.402, OPS+ 96 (645 ABs)

In no way would I ever advocate getting Adrian Beltre, but what is the defensive change from Chris Davis to Beltre? You’d have to think pretty big, and even though Davis can hit better, who really can say which is better.

I really am sort of liking Young at 3rd, Davis at 1st, stop-gap at SS. Doubt that gets done.

Not a bad contract anymore

2009 is the final year of his current contract, so it is palatable now.
I wouldn’t mind adding his defense and his bat for 2009 and seeing where it goes.

Beltre's bat would look a lot better if he played in TBiA everyday

and his defense is really good. It would be a ridiculous steal if we get him for Blalock and Duran

by Telegraph on Oct 10, 2008 12:47 PM CDT up reply actions

Why would it look better? That 109 OPS+ is...

…league and park adjusted.

Also most sources are indicating that RBiA is at or close to average in offense.

Physician: Primum non nocere

Batter: First, make no out

I don't think our ballpark is average in term of home runs, and neither is Safeco.

Beltre hits stuff hard, so he should be able to get a few more HRs if he played here. Even without this, I am more than happy with a 109+ OPS with very good defense for a third baseman.

Dirkatron Posted a Fanpost about this recently

…RBIA is close to neutral, if not neutral for the last 3-5 years. Beltre will receive no boost on the Rangers.

by FuturePants on Oct 10, 2008 5:00 PM CDT up reply actions

you mean the t ball post?

I don’t think he is saying that HR is average, only that the total runs. I am pretty sure our HR rate is like 10% above average. However, they did say that there is a Lefty/Righty split and that the HR rate for right handed batters is average, so I’ll buy that part.

On the other hand, I don’t think Safeco is a neutral park for either left handed or right handed batters. So he will gain a bit by playing here.

by Telegraph on Oct 10, 2008 7:24 PM CDT up reply actions

I think someone posted more details

basically the park has been nearly run neutral overall the last 3 years, but favors lefty hitters and lefty pitchers, with HRs a bit more prevalent, but not necessarily runs.

Sunny to Senior Exec VP

I’m frankly more afraid of Sunny making decisions than I am Nolan. Nolan is obviously more at the point, but I think I’d trust his judgment more.

Mavericks make deal

That i actually kinda like…

According to a report from the Indianapolis Star on Friday, the Pacers trade swingman Shawne Williams to the Dallas Mavericks for guard Eddie Jones, a pair of second-round picks and cash.

by octoberty on Oct 10, 2008 3:18 PM CDT reply actions

Williams is young

I like it. Considering we don’t have 1st round draft picks for like the next 10 years we need some youth and athleticism

Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.

by bigsteve on Oct 10, 2008 4:01 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah

between Bass, Wright, Williams, and Green we have definitely added some much needed athleticism. If we ever to get to see Green’s when it matters, I doubt it.
