Millwood Rebate Checks

I believe as a fan of the Texas Rangers and the hours I put in following the team and keeping up, Kevin Millwood owes me at least $100 of his $48 million deal he signed with the Rangers.

What is my logic? He is fat and sucks. He had great years with the Braves and with Cleveland (although it was a contract year). Don't get me wrong, I would prefer him to be consistant and a top pitcher in the majors, but we can get the same production if we would have re-signed Darren Oliver or Colby Lewis. Maybe Aaron Myette is available?

If a miracle happens and he has a good year, the Rangers should get another year free of charge. They should cancel his option on the contract and make him pitch anyway. If I was paid like Millwood and performed like he did this year in my job, they would have fired me by May.

I look foward to receiving my $100 from Millwood and spending it on a Chris Davis jersey.

Millwood

There is evidence that he was not really as bad as his surface stats seemed in 2008. Namely his 4.05 FIP which was over a full run lower than his 5.07 ERA.

He may be fat a frustrating at times, but I’d still rather see him going out there on a given day than, say, Scott Feldman.

He’s a bad pitcher. Not awful bad, but mediocre bad.

Teams don’t win divisions and certainly don’t win playoff series with pitchers like Kevin Millwood on the mound. He may help you get to 80 wins, but he’s not helping you get to 95.

I have a simple rule when acquiring players. “Can you see this guy winning a playoff game?” If the answer is no, then you either don’t sign him, don’t trade for him, or try to get rid of him.

Really hits one of my pet peeves. I have a hard time saying anyone who is playing professional sports “sucks.” They may not be as good as some of the others around them, but they most certainly do not “suck.”

I have the opposite pet peeve

When people say a pro athlete sucks they are clearly talking about in relation to his peers and not some random guy on the street. So in that sense, it is possible that a pro athlete sucks. Neifi Perez jumps to mind.
