minor trades
An example would be a trade with the Rays to deal with their need for a RF. Here's a Hardball Times fluff piece on the Rays minor league depth. The portion that caught my eye is
At rookie-level Princeton, all left-hander Matt Moore did was strike out nearly 13 batters per 9 innings and post a 1.66 ERA. . . . The Rays have tons of flexibility now with their system. Everyone's looking for young pitching, and the Rays have plenty of it. The one hole it looks like they'll have, right field, could be filled by trading some of these prospects. Or, they could trade one of their back-end starters like Andy Sonnanstine or Edwin Jackson. Flexibility.
The Rangers have a few RF options. I'm sure the Rays would love to discuss Hamilton, but that would get nowhere as the Rangers would want Kazmir for that or Shields plus a couple highly regarded prospects. The Rangers also have Murphy, Byrd, Cruz, and Boggs. I'm not all that interested in Sonanstine or Jackson, but I'd be happy to flip Murphy, Cruz, or Boggs for a couple of their minor leaguers, including Matt Moore highlighted above.
So, the idea is to conglomerate the less than spectacular trade possibilities the Rangers could accomplish this offseason into this thread. Add any that come to mind, or discuss the one above.
BTW, someone like Jamey or MJH needs to write a glowing Rangers' prospect report for Hardball Times.

stopgap 3B
Dallas McPherson could hold down the fort at 3B next season and possibly be acquired for something that is superfluous around here.
What would you ask Nolan Ryan: "... as a former pitcher, what would you think about having a useless lug standing out there behind you."
Then I'd tell him that useless lug’s name is Michael Young. -- lonestarJesus

A trade of Cruz, Murphy, or Byrd for some Tampa pitching...
…should definitely be looked into early in the offseason.

I am very open
to the idea of trading both Blalock and Byrd in deals like the one you suggested above.
If we can flip Byrd for an intriguing arm like Edwin Jackson, I would give it a look. I know the stats (or at least the peripherals) look scary, but he still has that mid-90s heat and a developed slider. If a guy like Jackson finally clicks, it could be Volquezian.
Yesterday i threw out the name of LHP Sean Marshall as another intriguing arm who could possibly be acquired for Byrd (although I admit that one year of Byrd might have to be supplemented by another piece).
As far as Blalock, I really expect there to be some serious interest in him this winter. I love the collection of bullpen arms in the Yankees system, and I am a huge fan of David Robertson…I think he will become a dominant late inning guy down the road, but he is buried on their depth chart. A year of Blalock should garner Robertson plus one other solid piece, preferably someone who wouldn’t clog a 40 spot.
If we can turn one year of Byrd and one year of Blalock into pieces that will help us win in 2010 (I have repeated this statement so much I feel like a candidate) I will be very pleased, and I think their open market value could surprise us.

Any sense from media reports or visits to Arizona what the Rangers are thinking on Cruz? And, whether there are other teams that are drooling over Cruz?

what they should do
is give the guy a half a season or so of near full time duty
right now theres:
hamilton
byrd
cruz
murphy
boggs
JMJ
that all will be gunning for a spot from last year
they should give cruz 500 AB in the OF. i dont think byrds value can get any higher and IIRC murphy/boggs can both handle CF right?
i hope they give 500 AB to cruz in the OF (if he does good), 500 AB to chris davis and 500 AB to maxram (DH?)

It doesn't make sense to go into next season with all of those players.
They all need to be playing regularly, since none of them are all that young.
I think Cruz is the most interesting offseason trade chip, because his value is sooooo hard to judge. He made a very clear shift in his statistical batting profile, and everyone has known about his power potential for a long time. This is a guy with the power (and possibly now the patience) to make the Rangers forget about Bradley.
If the Rangers believe this is the case, then Boggs or Murphy can be moved this offseason because an OF of Byrd in left, Hamilton in CF, Cruz in RF with Boggs or Murphy as a 4th OF, primarily as a COF, would be average if not better a little defense with way above average hitting ability.
If the Rangers believe this is not the case, but someone else does, he could be used to nab a useful piece.
Go Rangers!

Boggs and JMJ
Can simply start the year in the minors to be called up when needed. Thats just the way it works when you are a young player who isn’t a stud enough to earn regular playing time.

Does anybody remember reading that fanpost that detailed the history of AAAA players?
Cruz might have made some big leaps this year, but… I just keep thinking back to that article… are we sure he’s turned that elusive AAAA corner?
If not, wouldn’t it make more sense to deal him while his stock is high?

That's what I'm saying. I don't know if his stock is all that high.
He wouldn’t clear waivers, but how close to his September numbers is a reasonable expectation. Even .280/.350/.450 is really useful and tradeable as a significant package piece. If he’s more like .300/.380/.550, well….

His stock isn't all that high.
Listen, the guy cleared waivers without being claimed already this year. Having a solid month in the majors at the end of the season for a non competing club is not going to make any team drool with anticipation over Nelson Cruz. The guy is either going to have to prove himself while not playing every day OR is going to have to be a throw-in in another deal. Any suggestion that we could pry any halfway effective pitcher for Cruz straight up I think is a little too optimistic, at best.

I think that is likely the case, but I would like to read the tea leaves
to see what management and the coaches are thinking.
If his stock is that low around the league, is it that low with the Rangers? I’m looking for any comments made by Rangers coaches and management on Cruz’s September to see if it appears they think he’s a better bet to hit in the majors than in past years. His walk rate might indicate improvement in pitch recognition at the ML level. I’ve been wondering if the eyeballs on the field had noticed something similar in his ABs.
Go Rangers!

With as much as this team praises "seizing their opportunity"
…you’d have to think they are more excited about Boggs and Murphy. Not the same makeup as Cruz, and I know this team likes Cruz, but is he heir apparent to the Milton Bradley throne to (ideally) protect Hamilton in the lineup as a dangerous power bat and to spell Hamilton at right? At this point, I would have to say the club is definitely not counting on that happenning.

not THAT minor...
with the Boston Globe’s article noting that this could be Varitek’s last game in a Sox uniform… I think the player to target in a fairly minor deal is Clay Buchholz. I would talk to the Sox about Masterson as well, but I’d need significantly more back if they were trying to trade us Bard or Bowden.
One of the Marlins arms (Miller, Volstad, Nolasco, or Olsen) would also be very interesting. Homer Bailey (or perhaps Micah Owings) still interests me and with Cincinnati’s need for C and OF help, I think there’s got to be a deal there.
I would love to see us deal 2 of our catchers (preferably Laird and Salty) along with a couple midlevel prospects for these kind of high upside arms. No deals intrigue me more than trading from our excess for ‘special’ arms that could impact our rotation for the foreseeable future.

Here is what I would do...
Trade Salty & Fabio Castillo for Buchholz
Trade Laird for Homer and Low A 3rd baseman Soto
Trade Byrd for Hill and if we have to throw something in then I would go as high as maybe Kirkman.
That gives us 3 young ML ready arms to go with all our ML ready hitters.
We could then see if Padilla or Millwood have any value.

those all sound great
but with the exception of Laird for Homer, I doubt they are very realistic. I just don’t think the Red Sox will move Buchholz, even if we add Castillo, and I doubt the Cubs will deal Hill for one year of Byrd, even if we include Kirkman.

think about it
from their end…some players just don’t get traded. think about holland, and how few players in baseball you would trade him for, and then consider that Buccholz has already pitched a major league no hitter and was widely considered the best pitching prospect in baseball at this time last year. i don’t think his stuggles this year are enough to make Boston give any realistic thought to including him in a deal.
i think you have to look down to tier two with bowden and masterson.

here you go
minors: 3.27k/bb | 8.30h/9 | 0.35hr/9 | 2.28bb/9 | 7.45k/9 | 1.18whip
majors: 1.55k/bb | 6.93h/9 | 1.02hr/9 | 4.08bb/9 | 6.93k/9 | 1.22whip
Majors case of SSS with only 88.1ip, but he showed impeccable control in the minors with a HEAVY sink in both the minors and the bigs. He’s only 23, and he’s 6’6" 250 so he’s got the body to handle a workload. If he fails as a starter he can always be like Jamey Wright (only good… like for the first 2 months)
Those whips are really, really pretty to these eyes…

rather have Buchholz. That doesn’t make him available. If Salty can bring us Masterson+ I’m very interested.
If Salty and a low level arm can bring us Buchholz, I’m more interested.
Is no one worried that last time they traded, JD got the best of Theo, and he’ll probably be on guard as they discuss trade possibilities this offseason.
One more thing: I agree with Trident. The more bags the Rays steal on Vtek, the better.

Honestly
I don’t think Theo Epstein is the least bit afraid… or even wary… of JD. Let’s not get ahead of ourselves, the Rangers didn’t foresee the Gagne breakdown. He was great for us. It’s not like we raped and pillaged and set fire to the village, we got a trade both teams agreed on… and then they won the World Series regardless.
Theo knows what he’s doing, he’s got 2 rings. I would be really surprised if Salty can get us Masterson (Masterson + = rad), and if he can I have trouble finding downside in that at all. We’re dealing from a position of strength to a position of possible future strength. Perfect. He can bring those grounders all day, from first pitch or the bullpen.
At this rate, he’ll be throwing 107-110 by 2012
