Lower targets for acquiring pitching.
As much as I would like Peavy (whom we can give the two pitchers, CF and catcher they want in a deal) and Sabathia (just don't see us winning his services)... why don't we get creative, while also getting our kids some experience in 2009.
Randy Johnson: Because it looks like Arizona doesn't seem to want to pay him, lets go after Randy on a 1yr/$11 million deal.
I would also offer him a sweetheart package like Clemens to make it easier for him.
Ben Sheets: Because of his late season injury, I would go after him with a 3yr/$39 million deal with two option years and incentive bonuses for innings pitched.
I think adding those two and entering 2009 with a rotation of: Johnson, Sheets, Padilla/Millwood (one traded for anything in winter/the other traded at the deadline for anything), Harrison, McCarthy and Feldman... with Hurley, Hunter, Mendoza and Mathis in AAA as reinforcements... and mid-season replacements in Feliz and Holland by August 1 if need be.
Wouldn't mind Greg Maddux as a player/coach as mention in USA Today. Name him Pitching Coach and let him pitch as much as he wants. Interesting thought.

We all need to show a little patience
I strongly recommend not signing any FA pitcher unless it is for truly below market value and it’s for a younger guy in him prime. Sheets will get much more than what you are throwing out there and I say let someone else pay it. We have an obvious logjam at catcher. Trade one of them and maybe you package in a lesser prospect to bring in some pitcher, but then that is it. Trading a ton of stuff for a Greinke is a horrible mistake. Let this team improve over time without giving away a bunch of our best kids and then in 2010 or 2011 when we are one or two guys away from a shot at the title, then go get a FA stud.

sheets for 13 mil/yr is a hell of a deal

heres a thought though, why not offer him a huge incentive ladden 1 yr deal?
worst thing he can say is no and all he can do is drive up his value

uh
3 years is well below what sheets gets so what the hell makes you think a super fragile pitcher in his prime is going to try out a 1 year deal? I thought the OP was going to be the craziest Sheets not I read (lesser target…) but you’ve beaten him soundly. Congrats!

no no no
i was saying it would be intersting to offer and see if you get hung up on or if he considers it
again worst thing he can say is no and if he is healthy…its one good year + picks

Why do it with us, though?
If you’re a pitcher looking for a one year make good deal on the cheap, why come to Texas, home of bad defense?
Though there’s no way he settles for a one year offer. 3yrs/51mil sounds about right if his physical doesn’t look to dysmal. Anything less than that and I jump all the f*** over it.

I was excited about this FanPost...
I thought it might be a bit redundant, but I always enjoy dreaming about J.Sanchez, A. Miller or H.Bailey in a Ranger uniform.
Little did I know we’d be talking about a pitcher who made his first all star game in 1990.
Is there a reason you didn’t include the signings of Jack Morris or Kevin Tapani?

I wonder if a team could get Sheets on a 1yr+Club Option contract. Say $4-6M for the first year and $15M for the option year.

I’m not sure about you, but that would be equal to $21M over two years. IF Sheets’ injury is as severe as it sounds, he would simply be proving himself to a club that he is healthy and worthy of the follow years option.
Let’s put it this way, Bartolo Colon signed for the minimum. There’s no telling whether Sheets will be able to take the bump for 1 inning next season.
by bbdbrandon on Oct 17, 2008 4:26 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Sheets
Sheets is nothing like Colon. I don’t know how severe Sheets’ current injury is. But his history, while riddled with injuries, has never had that serious injury that keeps him out a year plus. He has never pitched fewer than 100 innings. Colon, over the last 3 seasons, has a total of about 200 innings. Sheets is going to be 30 next year while Colon was 35 this year and 33 when his serious injuries started. Sheets may not get the big money he may be seeking but I highly, highly doubt he will accept anything less than a 4, and most likely a 5, year deal in excess of 14 mil per.

by bigsteve on Oct 17, 2008 4:57 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I’m not going to debate that as, in my eyes, if anyone is worth that money, it is Sheets. HOWEVER, if you have a bunch of teams that are afraid to offer the 4/5 year BIG MONEY deal and instead sit with offers of 4/5 at $10M a year (which will obviously depend on the injury-which again, does not sound good), then the offer I asserted may be the best bet at eventually cashing in. I’m thinking similar to the contract Burnett signed for the Jays a couple years back. While it wasn’t as bonus heavy, it had a similar opt out.
As far as Colon goes, it is a different story, yes, but not as great as you are claiming. If Sheets can’t pitch this winter, and it looks as though he will be delayed to begin his new contract, I imagine teams will be as careful with him as they were with Colon.
Another comparable example, Freddy Garcia. Again, not exact, but close.

If you look at his stats last season he started 30 games and gave up 2 or less runs 14 times! In these games he was 8-2 with 4 no decisions.
Except for six consecutive terrible starts in June and on July 1st he was great. He got losses or no decisions in ten games where he gave up 3 or fewer runs.
His K/BB ratio was 4 to 1 and he is only 5 wins away from 300 for his career.
He was banged up in 2007, but otherwise he has pitched 184 or more innings and made over 30 starts in 4 of the last five years. He is still very consistent and wants to pitch!
I don’t see why you dismiss him so quickly. Pick up Hank’s option, trade him and use his 6 million on Johnson. It only costs you 4 million to take a flyer on a perfectly good pitcher!!
Take Johnson and trade for Homer, Marshall, Hill and/or Sanchez and that would be fine too. For $4 million in extra spending, I grab Johnson and see if he can be the stopper in the rotation we need.

Why not?
He is a free agent and even though he loves Arizona, they can’t afford him. Give him a sweetheart Clemens deal and bring him here for a year as a low cost bridge signing.
In his ten starts at RBiA he is 5-2 with a 3.84 era, 1.34 WHIP and opponents BA of .269.
He has 63ip, 66h, 29r, 27er, 7hr, 19bb, 70k. He has had success here and maybe it’s worth it to bend over backwards for a guy that will help Nolan show the kids coming up that you CAN be successful here if you pitch a certain way.
Keeping all options open to improving pitching staff, you must kick the tires and find out.

Arizona not willing to match 2008 salary.
Randy Johnson’s Future
By Tim Dierkes [October 17 at 9:30am CST] MLBTradeRumors.com
Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic has an in-depth look at the Randy Johnson situation. The legendary 45 year-old lefty was effective this year in 30 starts. It seems highly unlikely that he’ll retire just five wins from 300. There are concerns he would remain committed after winning those five games.
Piecoro says D’Backs GM Josh Byrnes hinted that he is not willing to go as high as $10MM for Johnson in 2009. The team seemingly doesn’t have much more than that to spend in total, and they have other needs. Also, the Diamondbacks are against incentive-based contracts. Still, Piecoro wonders if ownership could step in and mandate re-signing Johnson.
Johnson is right on the borderline for Type B status, but the D’Backs stand to pick up many draft picks for other players so they may not risk offering arbitration. Would Johnson pitch elsewhere? Piecoro feels that he favors the West Coast, making the Dodgers and Angels intriguing possibilities.

I think the A's focred their hand with Quentin.
The A’s wanted another good prospect for the Haren deal and didn’t like any of the good prospects left in D-Backs system so they told the D-Backs to go out and get them someone else to add to the deal. It’s not Eric Byrnes’ fault that the DBacks chose to deal Quentin to get Beane his guy to finish off the Haren deal.

Randy Johnson is a great choice if the years and dollars don't cripple us.
Think about it. We ABSOLUTELY have to fix our pitching, on the short term, for next year and possibly 2010 if needed.
There is no fucking way this team thinks it could even put up a credible starting five with the players we have now.
I’m not saying go and sign a CC Sabathia or trade for a Jake Peavy, which will cost teams this bounty according to sources: Two near ready pitchers and a center fielder. Now if that’s what it costs maybe a package of Holland or Feliz, Hurley or Harrison, and Julio Borbon could get the talks started, but Im not saying that or going there.
Signing a guy like Johnson can give this team some relief from the hellish pitching we saw this year. He could hold down a spot until we promote from within.

Rich Hill surrendered two runs and four hits in 5 1/3 innings for Aragua of the VWL on Friday.
Hill, who is looking to put a disastrous 2008 behind him, struck out six and walked none in his debut in Venezuela. It’s a very encouraging start as he tries to rebuild his stock and put himself in position to claim a rotation spot next spring.
