Milton Bradley: Type A (Probably)

I apologize if it has already been posted, but the latest update at MLB Trade Rumors has Milton Bradley as a Type A (according to Elias projections.)  Sounds like great news to me!

Source: MLBTR and Type A/B Projections

So now it's a win/win situation.  We sign Bradley and we have a very productive DH. If we don't sign him, we net two more beautiful draft picks to add to the farm.

I wonder if anyone will sign him

Because of the injury issues… You can’t really rely on the guy.

of course someone will sign him.

the preceding post was a great success.

lol

Its funny how overlooked that is by a lot of people. He had a VORP of 56.9 (15th in the Majors) and an EQA of .341 (1st by nearly 20 points in the AL and 3rd in the Majors about 20 and 30 points behind Chipper and Pujols). That’s ridiculously good and the VORP is even more impressive considering he had a hell of a lot less PAs than every non Chipper Jones ahead of him.

By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

What I don't get

is why people so hate the notion of bringing him back next year because he is always injured regardless of if he repeats this season or not. People were pissed about this season for him. But if you could have A-Rod’s or Pujols’ bat in the lineup for 500 PAs or so, would you really be complaining too much?

Agree

All this talk of making Max our DH drives me crazy. First of all it would kill any trade value he may have and second people seem to believe that as great as his year was last year in AA that he will just be able to come up to the bigs and reproduce that. I think he will be a nice offensive player and maybe its just me but I would like to see the guy produce at AAA before proclaiming him to be the next dynamic bat in the Texas lineup.

Then what do you do with CD?

3b? He’s a butcher there.

COF? I really don’t want to move him to COF due to his lack of straight line speed, but I guess it’s an option given that cannon he’s rocking. You’ve got Byrd and Cruz out there, but I suppose a CD/Hambone/Cruz Missile (from L-R) OF wouldn’t be that bad.

What would your ideal COF, 3b, 1b, DH, C rotation look like next year, Large Steve?

The 40 Trumps All!!!

by thedirkatron on Oct 18, 2008 2:27 PM CDT up reply actions

Since you asked

I don’t know if ideal is the right word but with what we have, assuming Blalocks option is picked up, this is what I think would be best

COF: The trio of Byrd, Murphy, and Cruz handle those two positions. Byrd can play CF whenever Hammy needs to play RF. I don’t think I want to see Cruz in LF at all so he is the odd man out when Hamy plays RF IMO.

3B: Davis. Hes not a gold glover by any means but I also don’t think he is as bad a butcher as you make him out to be. This is more or less forced due to Hanks being here. If we are going to have Hank here I don’t want to put him at 3B where he seems to not be able to stay healthy.

1B: Blalock. If he gets injured Davis can slide over and also whenever Hank needs days off.

DH: Bradley. If his primary position is DH I think he can be counted on to play 130+ games. If Hammy needs a day off from the field Bradley should be healthy enough to play the field if thats deemed necessary for the day. Max Ramirez is in AAA if Bradley does go down to injury for a DL stint.

C: Either Laird or Teagarden is the starter and we should sign a veteran backup. Ramirez plays everyday in OKC. If we keep Salty he goes down to OKC also and he and Max share catcher duties down there and play DH when they aren’t catching. Thats more to keep their offensive persona around than anything. I don’t like doing that in the majors but in the minors they could use all the ABs possible.

The first thing this organization should address this offseason is Michael Young.

Does he make the move to third now?

The faster we find this out, the easier it will be to determine the futures of Davis, Blalock and Bradley.

Right?

sacrificed offense for defense this past offseason when they acquired Bartlett. Add that to their maturing and improved SP and they are one game from the WS.

Sure.

But there other factors in play as well. Adding Longoria to the offense was nice, as was adding Percival to the ‘pen (as a mentor as much as anything), and moving Upton off of 2b where he was putrid and to CF where he’s decent and Iwamura to 2b.

But, yah, defense is so nice.

I’d move Face to 3b and sign a defense first SS so fast if I was GM.

But it is what it is and he ain’t getting moved this off season.

Max isn't really ready IMO

And again, a point people keep missing is that there were 2 hitters in all of baseball better than Bradley when he was playing. Neither of them were in the AL. Bradley just isn’t looked at as that good of a hitter by many here which is the reason why everyone thinks that MaxRam can easily replace him. Chris Davis had an amazing rookie season. He posted a .293 EQA. I think that is around the best you could hope for from Ramirez over the next couple of seasons if he played in the Majors. That is still 50 points lower than what Bradley posted this past season.

He came back from knee surgery way quicker than he should have.

If he hadn’t rushed back he probably would’ve been fine to play the OF by mid-season. He’ll be more than healthy enough to play the OF by next spring training.

Now, whether you want someone as fragile as him running around in the OF 9 innings per game is a whole nother issue entirely.

But he can still play the OF.

People tend to overlook the fact that he came back from major knee surgery about 6 months faster than he should have. Give him a full winter to rehab and get the strength back and he will be fine to play the OF.

And as you said whether or not you want him out there is a completely separate issue.

How many games did he miss due to his legs?

They go hand in hand. Rehabbing a knee injury can lead to injuries to other parts of your leg or the other leg because you overcompensate.

If you are trying to argue that he didn’t miss many games due to that knee therefore he was fully healed then you’re wrong.

by RangerMad on Oct 18, 2008 9:37 AM CDT up reply actions

ACL injury

You realize he had reconstructive surgery on his ACL in September 2007 and was playing baseball in March 2008 right? Thats 6 months to recover and rehab and be playing a professional sport. He didn’t have an offseason to get in shape and workout he was too busy rehabbing. In most sports you are out a year automatically. While in baseball you don’t have the cutting which puts the pressure on the knee but simply being out there after that short a time period is remarkable. I am fully aware of his previous injury history but its a common occurence with injuries. You are overly cautious of reinjuring it and thus you put added pressure on other parts of your body or you neglect other parts and get injured elsewhere.

Like Dirk said he may not be able to play an inning of the outfield next year but that won’t be because of the knee injury he got in September 2007.

forgive me for being argumentive this morning

I think Dirk said he could play the OF next year. And I get your point about coming back quickly from ACL surgery. However, given his history, he will only play in ~100 games next year which is a good year for him. I don’t see the Cubs or any other NL team making a serious offer to him. Bradley just might accept arbitration from the Rangers.

Nolan Ryan should be the Rangers president, GM, manager and pitching coach.

But he can still play the OF.

Then below he says this

Now, whether he’ll stay healthy for long enough to complete a full inning or two in spring training, that’s another story.

Im not arguing that he may only play 100 games. Given his past that is a very real possibility. But in those 100 games he is a dynamic hitter. Likes been said if you go in signing him with no backup plan in case he gets injured thats your fault. But if you need another impact bat in your lineup and have someone who can step in should he go down then he is a very valuable player. Some team will give him a multi year deal. He had too good a year this year to not get one.

He played 126 this year (the same number as Barry Bonds in '07)

after coming back prematurely from a catastrophic knee injury.

I’d be fairly confident in him playing at least that many and probably more next year if he’s DH’d the whole year long.

And even if he does only get ~100 games total, isn’t ~100 games of ~.900-1.000 OPS pretty darn valuable?

The 40 Trumps All!!!

by thedirkatron on Oct 18, 2008 12:38 PM CDT up reply actions

it is very valuable

but I think the Rangers should continue rebuilding, thus playing young players. There are plenty of guys around that could possibly be impact bats at very affordable salaries in 2010 and going forward. Bradley’s contract in 2010 may preclude the team from having the budget to sign a top flight pitcher that would push that year’s team towards contention.

Yah I don’t think he’s the kind of player we should be devoting long term resources toward right now, especially as we’re rebuilding.

Offer the arb and if he takes it, great. You’ve got a great hitter for another year with no long term commitment. If he walks, great. You’ve got some high draft picks to play with.

He started in only about

110ish though so let’s not get too giddy about games appeared. However I agree with you DT that 100g of Bradley makes a hell of a lot of difference. If Bradley accepts an incentive-based contract based on GS or PA then that would be perfect IMO. If not, I would be happy to have him back for a yr if he gets no better offers with the possiblity of trading him if we are noncompetitive at the deadline. Who loses on that deal?

Because nobody else can give you what MB can give you

Im not saying have a 10 million dollar backup. But if you are a team like the Rangers who have a bat like Max who can fill in for 40+ games possibly if Milton goes down then you go after Milton. If you sign him and have no backup plan in case his injury history comes to pass then you shouldn’t have signed him.

My hope is that Blalock's shoulder

responds well to the workouts he’s supposed to go through this offseason that will let him play third without reinjuring himself again. Have him split time at 3B with Metcalf to keep him healthy and have him take a day or two to DH while Bradley DHs the rest of the week. Ramirez is in AAA until Blalock is traded when he comes up to be the DH/back-catcher. At least that is how I hope it plays out.

Why risk Blalock at 3B?

He played fine at 1B after coming back and if thats the position he needs to play to stay healthy I am fine with that. He is only 28 years old next year. With Smoak on the way Davis is our biggest ML ready trade chip IMO. Theres no denying that when healthy Blalock is still a dynamic hitter. If anything we can trade Davis for that top of the rotation young starter, keep Blalock at 1B next season, if Smoak is ready for 2010 then Blalock goes on his merry way and we get draft pick compensation. If hes not ready we can look into signing Hank to a one year deal possibly until Smoak is ready.

Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.

by bigsteve on Oct 17, 2008 11:08 PM CDT up reply actions

Hank

would really have to suck to only get 1 yr offers after 2009. So badly you probably wouldn’t re-sign him. You either trade Hank between now and then or take your draft compensation. If he excels in the first half of the year (if he stays healthy and hits like he has the last 550 abs) hopefully you can deal him somewhere in a Lofton/Gagne manner.

I also think I’ve been convinced losing CD isn’t the end of the world. His value is at an all time high, and after looking long and hard at Andrus’ stat line vs. other “top tier” minor league ss… I think he looks really, really advanced. Combine his age with his stats and what we’ve heard about his defense and leadership skills, wow… I think that could be a move we don’t want to make. Not saying I think we should move CD, but out of our top guys he’s the most palatable loss to me. Because at this point all our elite pitching talent should be totally off limits unless in a total pillaging.

At this rate, he’ll be throwing 107-110 by 2012

I agree about Hank

Its just a pipedream but is a possible scenario.

As for CD and his value. If he puts up a full season of numbers next year his value will go even higher. Then he would be a guy who has proven to be the real deal not just a rookie wonder.

A few things

1. If you’re trying to put the best defense out there, I think Davis needs to be at first base next year. I think your choices are Blalock at 1st and Davis at third, which puts two poor defensive players in the corners or Blalock at third and Davis at first which at least gives you solid defense at first base.

2. I think Blalock gets traded before July 31st. A Blalock that is able to play 1st or third base will have a lot more value than one that is physically incapable of playing third.

3. You don’t trade Davis now. You still have him locked up for 6 more years. He is looking like a perfect franchise player. I think the only player you trade Davis for is Lincecum or Price.

Blalock

I think we’re in a great situation with him. If he rebuilds value with a good season at third, we’re in a position to deal him for value before the deadline. If not, we’re prepared to move on without him after next season. But we need to make sure we give him a real shot at third. He has a full offseason to get his arm back into shape, so that shouldn’t be a problem. And I agree about not trading Davis. Trade away the six million dollar man first.
