Congrats to the Rays, who will face off against the Phillies in the World Series.
Jeff Wilson has an article up on the strides made by the Rangers in improving their farm system and developing a strong pipeline of talent coming up through the minors, with some quotes from guys like Rick Adair and Scott Servais about what the Rangers are trying to do.

Thank God the Rays took out Boston.
Price…. He’s not a bad LOOGY, huh? Must be nice.
Sure will be interesting to see what goes on with Price next year. Will he need more time in AAA to get a handle on his command? That would seem to be the wise thing to do.
Go Rangers!

Boston fans might be bitching about his K of Drew to end the 8th inning though
But I just watched the video of it again on MLB.com, and looking at the side view I think it’s pretty clear Drew did drag that bathead through the zone:

I recall hearing one of the commentators mention
that he’s coming out of the bullpen this year, but they intend to put him in the rotation. Not sure how accurate this is, however.
by jwiscarson on Oct 20, 2008 10:25 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
They'll at least try him in the rotation sooner or later
The Rays religating him to the bullpen before sending him to the starters mound in the bigs would be akin to us doing the same thing with Feliz: it ain’t gonna happen, even if the bullpen somehow does wind up being his long-term home.

You can’t compare Price and Feliz. Not trying Price in the rotation would be like if they had left Randy Johnson in the pen. Price is as close to a sure fire all star starting pitcher as any prospect has been in some time.

price is more polished

price has a track record (college + upper minors)
price is in the majors now
price has throw in pressure situations (clearly lol)

I’d be so, so happy if we’d turn our best power lefty into a LOOGY, but apparently the Boy Blunder wants to keep trying Holland as a starter. So dumb. So very, very dumb.

Trading Rays
You what the Rays didn’t do? They didn’t trade a stud pitching prospect for a pitcher that was “closer” only to see that stud pitching prospect turn into a stud pitcher and the supposedly closer pitcher not pan out. There were no shortcuts for the Rays and there are no shortcuts for the Rangers. Just say NO to trading for veteran pitchers.

what the Rays did do
was trade a young, highly regarded position player for a young, highly regarded SP.

reductio ad absurdum again
I knew someone would try to reduce my argument to absurdity. Of course you would make your proposed trades. But no one is offering them. Any realistic trade proposal will require a future starter close to the majors in return and its not something the Rangers should do.
The Rangers have to learn the lessons of Young and Danks and not sacrifice a prominent future starting pitcher for a quick fix now. What you’re proposing sounds awfully similar to those two trades. I think you would be better served proving any trade you propose won’t end up the same as those trades. If you do that then maybe I would get on board.

Really?
Trading Young — who was about as old at the time of the trade as Peavy is now, and who had a very solid season in the majors under his belt — for Eaton, who was injury prone, not very good when he was healthy, and a year away from free agency awfully similar to trading for Peavy, who is under team control for four more years, is 27 years old, and is one of the best pitchers in baseball?
How is that awfully similar?
by Adam J. Morris on Oct 20, 2008 11:06 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
On the Danks-McCarthy trade.
The Rangers Felt A Need To Solve A Hole Now. Regardless of Danks’ potential, he wouldn’t be an option for at least another year. The Rangers needed help now, so they traded for the ready, and still young, McCarthy. It’s the price you have to pay when you failed to develop any pitchers in the minors from 2000-2003.
On the Young-Eaton deal.
By adding Young to the deal, the Rangers got Otsuka, who turns 34 in January. He moves into the eighth-inning role that the Rangers have struggled to fill this winter. Texas missed out on free agents Kyle Farnsworth, Braden Looper and Octavio Dotel.
Any time you trade or sign a reliever, you are in win-now mode IMO. Letting a young pitcher take his lumps in the bullpen or trying to go bargain bin FA hunting to fill the bullpen is not something a contender does, but it’s what the Rangers should have done instead of trading a pitcher years away from FA for a pitcher one year away.

But man, that’s a tough call. I know we’ve still got Smoak making his way towards the wings of the Texas stage, but it’s still tough for me to swallow the thought of parting with Chris Davis already, although I do definitely understand the benifits of such a move.
But if we are indeed confronted with the opportunity to net someone like, say… Matt Cain for him this offseason, I suppose that will be something JD would pull the trigger on – we already know he’s not gunshy about trading away his big chips when he thinks he’s getting a more integral one in return (Hamilton/Volquez and McCarthy/Danks).

Delmon Young vs Chris Davis
I was thinking this exact thing last night as I watched Garza pitch. Davis put up superior offensive numbers throughout the minors compared to Young and thus far in the majors has outperformed him. The only thing on Youngs side is his age. If we can get a Matt Garza type pitcher for Chris Davis when we have a Justin Smoak almost ready we have to do it. I love Crush but if he can bring that stud young pitcher back then I gots to say “Buh bye”

You consider, but still don't do it IMO
Don’t trade any young position players with the potential of Davis unless you are blown away. If he has a full season in the Majors at least as strong as this past season, you are looking at a guy who has a lot more value around the league. Waiting a year also makes sure you have a back-up option if Smoak progresses as expected.
I still don’t like doing any trades right now outside of clearing logjams out, but if you are a dead-set on trading Davis, wait a year.

Trading for veteran pitchers seems to have worked for TB with Garza
as well as for Boston with Beckett and with Schilling and Pedro before that and for Philly with Blanton and Lidge.
Saying that no team should trade for veteran pitchers is pretty silly, imo.

amended
That’s why I amended to specify trading pitching for pitching. Also, if the deal is a salary dump, the chances of it being a good trade go up. Neither Greinke or Peavy will be those kind of deals. Beckett, Pedro and Blanton were salary dumps. Schilling was traded twice and each time the team trading for him got the better deal. This was due to Schilling’s no trade clause that Boston had to convince him to waive. So yes, if you are a Boston, New York, or any other desirable destination, you can get a good deal in trade. Unfortunately, DFW is not one of those locations and we have to pay a premium in trades. It’s just not worth it right now IMO.

You missed my point. Salary was a major part of that deal that helps to schew it differently then other deals for pitchers. Salary isn’t an issue with either Greinke or Peavy so it’s unlikely that the Rangers will get a good deal without trading a decent pitcher in return. Therefore the Rangers shouldn’t trade.

Sure
Mark Mulder ended up being a bad deal for the Cards. Hudson ended up being a good deal for the Braves. Sometimes, trading young players for a solid starting pitcher works. Sometimes, it doesn’t.
I don’t think, though, that you can be so terrified about the possibility of a loss that you simply never make a move. You have to apply a cost/benefit analysis and evaluate the risk, the potential downside and potential upside.
by Adam J. Morris on Oct 20, 2008 11:41 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Trading for an Ace
You also have to take into consideration the position of your club when evaluating these trades for a potential ace. This will clearly center in your cost/benefit analysis. It is hard to see the Haren trade as poor with Eveland’s success. The Diamondbacks were in a win-now mentality and were coming off a largely successful year. Haren complimented Webb/Johnson very well and at the beginning of the year the team was seen as having one fo the best rotation’s in baseball.
If the Rangers make a trade for a pitcher (or sign a big time pitcher free agent) they still won’t be looking at having one fo the better rotations in baseball. This Rangers team is not in a win now mentality and should not have trades evaluated in the same way as the Diamondbacks did with Haren. Haren had a pretty good season last year as well, FWIW.

Make-up
I agree with that assessment. Yesterday he really went out and kept his composure.
The point I am making is the problem with Garza has always come down to make-up, not stuff. If he is able to keep his composure he’ll be a very good pitcher. If he can’t, he’ll continue to fall between very good sometimes and not so good sometimes. He has a live fastball with an above average curveball. The Rays have really worked on keeping him focused (IE the earplugs) and I think that will be the key in making him a solid 2 or 3 in the rotation type pitcher.

Rick Adair, the club’s minor league pitching coordinator, counted 27 starters in the system who he believes have a chance to make an impact in the major leagues.
Wow, has the Rangers system ever had anything approaching that number of potential impact arms? I’m thinking they’d have been hard pressed to say they had half that number many years.
Hurley, Harrison, Feliz, Holland, Main, Perez, Beavan, Hunter, Boscan, Font, Wieland, Ross, Ramirez, Kiker, Poveda, Pimentel, Castillo, Murphy, Gomez, Ocampo, Hyatt, Diamond, Schlact… That’s 23, who else? Miggy de los Santos, Swanson?

Rangers’ top 10 prospects
1. Neftali Feliz, RHP: The hard-throwing Dominican might not be the pitcher closest to the major leagues, but he has the most upside in the next wave.
2. Derek Holland, LHP: His rise in 2008 culminated with a 13-1 record and 2.27 ERA at three levels. He could be in Arlington by June.
3. Justin Smoak, 1B: An advanced power hitter from both sides of the plate after three years of college, he could move as fast as Chris Davis.
4. Michael Main, RHP: Not much action in 2008, but his small sample was impressive. He’s a tremendous athlete and has electric stuff.
5. Martin Perez, LHP: If not for his age (17), he could be the top prospect. Great stuff. Easy delivery. Lots of growing up to do.
6. Taylor Teagarden, C: He maintains rookie/prospect status heading into 2009. Terrific defensively and showed pop at the plate in September.
7. Elvis Andrus, SS: Some have concerns about his 32 errors, but he has great range and a big arm. He also hit .295 and stole 54 bases.
8. Julio Borbon, CF: He hit .322 at two levels, but a crowded big league outfield will have him at Triple A to start 2009.
9. Engel Beltre, CF: He’s only 18, and he will continue to get stronger. That means more power to go with great speed and a plus arm.
10. Max Ramirez, C: He could be the Rangers’ DH in 2009, combining power and average, but his skills behind the plate are lacking.

what's funny about all these rankings is that
Andrus was number 19 on last year’s prospect rankings and has had an amazing season. He has got to be a top 30 prospect again this year. WIth all that said, almost each ranking out there now has him outside of the top 5 Rangers prospects. I don’t know if BA will rank guys like Perez, Main, and Holland that high, but it certainly appears that these prospects deserve to be ranked that highly. It makes me feel very good about the future.
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

Who's Pablo?
My guesses (not necessarily in the order that I would rank them):
1) Neftali Feliz
2) Derek Holland
3) Michael Main
4) Wilmer Font
5) Blake Beavan
6) Neil Ramirez
7) Wilfredo Boscan
8) Martin Perez
9) Eric Hurley (If Adair is including guys who’ve played in the Majors)
10) Omar Poveda
11) Kasey Kiker
12) Robbie Ross
13) Tommy Hunter (If Adair is including guys who’ve played in the Majors)
14) Tim Murphy
15) Joe Wieland
16) Carlos Pimentel
17) Kyle Ocampo
18) Doug Mathis (If Adair is including guys who’ve played in the Majors)
19) Miguel De Los Santos
20) Thomas Diamond (If Adair is including guys on the 40-Man Roster)
21) Fabio Castillo (if he’s still viewed as a starter)
22) Kennil Gomez
23) Jacob Brigham
24) Michael Schlact (Going with the scouts here)
25) Beau Jones (if he’s still viewed as a starter)
26) Zachary Phillips
27) Jared Hyatt
Other candidates:
28) Juan Grullon
29) Geuris Grullon (only started 5 of the 27 games he’s pitched in the last two seasons)
30) Anyenil Mendoza
31) Miguel Munoz (suspended 50 games for Mephentermine, which isn’t exactly like using Winstrol)
32) Ezequiel Rijo
33) Reinier Bermudez (incredible numbers in DSL, but he’s 23 and needs to be playing in the States. Reportedly throws 96-97. Might be viewed as strictly a reliever in the Minors from this point on)
34) Kelvin De Leon (Rangers righthander, not the Yankees outfielder)
35) Richard Bleier
36) Edwin Escobar
37) Luis Parra
38) Mike Ballard
39) Tae Ahn
40) William (Matthew) Thompson
41) Michael Kirkman

heh
The Rangers need pitching. They have enough hitting, so how about this trade? Send Michael Young to Yankees for Phil Hughes, Brett Gardner and Edwar Ramirez.

Something happen to Derek Jeter, Alex Rodriguez or Robinson Cano that hasn’t made the news yet?
