New T.R. Sullivan mailbag up
T.R. Sullivan has a new mailbag column up...
We have some wacky trade proposals, as usual, along with some stuff on Hank Blalock (who Sullivan has generally been pretty bullish on, and who he expects to be back in 2009)...

I loved T.R.'s response to the Manny question.
Sometimes T.R. gets on my nerves with his more traditional-thinking baseball stuff, but his smart-ass responses to mailbag questions always bring a smile to my face.

Blalock
Does anyone think he’s not coming back?
Does anyone think Bradley would then also be re-signed?

My problem was how TR says how "productive" he will be.
For a guy to pay $6.2 million to, we’d better hope he can put together more than 6 weeks’ worth of games. For the money, he certainly wasn’t worth it last year – not because his numbers were bad when he played, but because he simply didn’t play.

Crazy trade proposals....
Well, not a lot to write about this time of year. Gotta print something.

That's funny. Whether I agree or not. I'll have to use that line sometime.

Why they are doing a weekly mailbag this offseason puzzles me
They never have had enough material for the monthly one, and now they want to quadruple that?

Love this right here:
"I just read on SI.com that Bobby Valentine is interested in coming back to the U.S. to manage. Is there any chance he would come back to Texas?
— Donna T., Tyler, Texas
Valentine and Ryan are close friends. Valentine would definitely be interested in coming back to Texas. "
I’d love for him to be back. Please Bobby, replace the Warsh for us.

Only if he promises
to put on the disguise when he gets kicked out of a game. Greatest moment ever in managerial kickings.

also
not sure if anyone was paying attention, but the embarrassingly poor crop of players the Rangers sent to the AFL this year (especially considering we have the deepest farm in baseball) was part of a 28-1 loss today. Beau Jones and Andrew Laughter, who had been the only two semi-bright spots, fared about as well today as all the other pitchers, and Chad Tracy didn’t give himself much to talk about in his little diary feature. As far as Borbon, I hope he is playing some gold glove defense.
by clark on Oct 20, 2008 7:25 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
I suppose
if you include Smoak, who has only played one game, that wording doesn’t really apply. but beyond that, we sent a collection of fringe prospects and Borbon, who, while legit, has done little so far to quiet critics about his potentially Pierre-esque bat.

yeah
i need to change that. a friend sent that to me after a night spent driving around in a limo, and i got a kick out of it (awkward angle and all), but that pic, coupled with my recent petulant behavior on this board (crappy work week coupled with sudden Cowboys free-for-all) is making me look like an idiot (even more than normal).

heh
no problem. I wasn’t offended or anything like that. Actually it was pretty funny.
I just wondered if it was all that appropriate given how many old/young people populate the board.
It’s not like I’m the king of classy profile pics or anything ;)

Yup.
It’s not visible in the picture, but behind him there are 4 dead hookers strewn across the garden.

Is a hooker every really alive, though?
That’s the question.

WTF, TR?
Would Gerald Laird, Elvus Andrus and Michael Main be enough for (the Royals’) Zack Greinke?
— Joseph W., Trophy Club, Texas
Sure, as long as they don’t forget to swing by and pick up Derek Holland on their way up I-35.
I think Main, Andrus and Laird is pretty fair value for the Grink. The Royals might not be on board with that package, but it’s certainly in the ballpark. Adding a top 25 overall minor league prospect to that is just stupid. That’s as asinine as some of the trade proposals TR gets that he makes fun of. Maybe stupider. Main, Holland, Andrus and Laird is a crazy package.

I am not sure
if TR has jumped on the Main bandwagon quite as readily as we all have after reading the instruct reports.

What do you think of Laird and Byrd to the Reds for Homer Bailey and Jeff Keppinger? Bailey would be an excellent No. 4-5, and Keppinger could have a shot at playing third.
— John P., Dallas
You know, John P., I was thinking almost the exact same thing the other day.
The Reds have been open about their desire for a RH OF’er and a starting catcher.
But my idea was Salty and Byrd for Bailey and Edwin Encarnacion. The only problem is that once I started looking through the stats, it turns out EE is widely reported to be one of the worst defensive 3b in the league. Cause otherwise that would seem like a deal that could really help out both teams.
I have zero interest in Jeff Keppinger.

i would deal laird for bailey
but byrd is no throw in. i would want another solid piece for him, a b level prospect at the least.
by clark on Oct 20, 2008 9:02 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I think myself
Byrd for Bailey straight up might be a pretty fair deal, if Cincy is really as down on the Homah as has been rumored.

If Bailey’s up for trade, the Reds can beat a package of Laird by simply sending out a mass email inquiry.

Bah… go back to your photobucket searching.
by oc on Oct 20, 2008 11:56 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Why?
Byrd has been good the last two seasons and is widely regarded as being a great face guy. Plus he is set to be at worst a type-B fa, and maybe a type-A after next season.
People always seem to underestimate his value. (See: Murton, Matt.)
I don’t know if the Reds would be willing to do that deal, but it’s not crazy lopsided or anything.
