Boston fans on ESPN

If you go look at Boston's forum on ESPN, almost every single fan would love to do a Teagarden for Buchholz 1 for 1 deal.  They like Buchholz but they're all in love with Teagarden.

I know we would rather package a deal with Salty and others for Buchholz.  Say Boston doesn't want to do that though.

Do we have to pull the Buchholz for Teagarden trade?

No question.

i wouldn't

Tea is going to be a lot more valuable than an overrated Buchhlolz will ever be…

Hmm...

This wouldn’t have anything to do with Tea being a former longhorn great does it.:) Whether you think Clay will be a bust or not the Rangers have catchers and to trade any one of them for a guy with the #1 stuff Clay has is a no brainer.

He strikes out a bunch of batters and up until last year never walked many.

If they offer us Buchholz for Tea I don’t know how we don’t take that.

Do you believe a) he was never any good, b) that he fell off this year and will never get back to how good he was before, or c) that he’s a Triple-A stallion who doesn’t have what it takes to cut it the bigs?

teagarden or buchholtz

who is more likely to go to multiple allstar games?
who is more likely to win a cy young/MVP?

if you said this even at midseason this last yr we would have gotten laughed at

Buchholz

I’ve heard some people (mostly Law and scouts he has talked to) say that Buchholz was not hitting the same top velocity on his pitches as was advertised. Law is quick to point out that he has not seen Buchholz a lot in person, so he is not saying that Buchholz is overrated. Law did say that the scouts he talked to have seen Buchholz on more than one occasion. Then, Buchholz kind of faltered a bit in the bigs.

Teagarden, on the other hand, was supposed to be a great defensive catcher with only so-so offense. The defense has been great, while the offense has surpassed anything that I ever expected (which of course is based on reading a few things here and there on the internet).

In total, two highly regarded prospects got a small taste of the bigs this season. One fell short of expectations, while the other exceeded them. Since Teagarden looked better and is currently a Ranger, I find it difficult to part with him. Of course, there is no hard evidence that Teagarden will continue this production. Just as there is no way to be sure that Buchholz will not improve.

Don't forget

Bucholz had a no-no back in 2007. I would go to the BoSox with the attitude that TT is the Rangers starting catcher. They would need to give back something equal in return. Is Bucholz the best JD could do? I think FL might offer more.

Nolan Ryan should be the Rangers president, GM, manager and pitching coach.

My head is spinning

Buchholz is a special talent. He was utterly dominant at every level in 2007. He has given up a single hit in 8 innings so far in the AFL, a notoriously hitter friendly league. He has what it takes to be a true ace.

And we think JD should haggle for more?!?!

If we can trade Teagarden for Buchholz, we should do it in a second (or less). If this happens, it allows you to trade Laird for any package of prospects (and not just major league ready pitching) and that should grease the wheels on his departure. Then you give Salty the starting job in 2009 and sign a veteran backup. That would be, in my mind, the perfect scenario.

Salty

he has nothing left to prove anywhere but the big leagues. It is time for JD to stop mismanaging this situation and to give one catcher the starting job and stick with him. Salty has become undervalued around here, but he has all the tools to become a very good major league catcher for the next decade.

Salty was handled horribly last season, it's true.

He needs to be catching everyday somewhere next season, whether that’s in Texas, for another MLB team, or even if that means a stint in AAA to get his value back up a little.

Is it really up to R-Was?

He was put in a pretty crappy situation last year, imo.

Salty came up at a time when a well-liked veteran was playing well at his position. They pretty much had to split time. I don’t know what else R-Was could’ve done in that situation.

Only Holland and Feliz are on par or better than Buchholz

And neither one is ready to contribute in the majors just yet. If BOS really does offer Buchholz for any of our three young catchers, you have to pull the trigger. Even if we have to add a second player IMO.

Trade Tea for Buchholz and Buchholz only (or a Yovani Gallardo/Phil Hughes).

If we trade...

both Salty and Tea this offseason, isn’t it possible we could be left without a real bright spot a Catcher?

We know Laird is serviceable, and at times more than that. We think we’ve got a potential hitting machine in Max Ram but we’re not sure he can stay behind the plate. I just don’t want to see us calling Rod Barajas in 2 years asking him to come back.

If Tea gets you Buchholz and Salty+ gets you Cain or Grienke then you probably have to do them both. But I still would like to feel solid about our behind the plate situation when this team is ready to contend.

We have more catchers in the minors besides those 4

Laird is under team control for another 2 years so if we decide to trade both Tea and Salty we could conceivably keep laird for another couple years until he reaches free agency and then still be looking at a good defensive catcher ready in the wings.

I would rather

keep one of Salty or Teagarden, unless we are really knocked over by offers. As I have stated elsewhere, I think the ideal situation is to trade Teagarden now while his value is so high and to trade Laird for prospects, give Salty the job out of ST and sign a veteran backup while Max catches every day in AAA.

I think JD already has...

his marquee trade. Feliz, Salty, Harrison, Andrus, Jones (and the players they are traded for) will leave their mark on this team for years to come. JD can add to his legacy (or continue his self-redemption) if he moves any C for Clay Buchholz.

by Haeger Champ on Oct 22, 2008 9:42 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

true

i keep holding out on calling that his marquee deal until the big guns (Feliz and Andrus) make an impact in the majors, and Harrison and Salty truly solidify their status as useful parts of the big league squad.

But yes, chances are in one or two years there will be no doubt about that trade.

by clark on Oct 22, 2008 11:00 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Laird

I am growing concerned about him. The two teams that made the most sense for him, Florida and Cincy, both seem to have found younger, cheaper catchers who they view as adequate for the time being (Baker in FL and Hanigan in Cin). It could just be posturing on their part, but I really don’t know if there is much of a market for a league average catcher. Perhaps Laird could be dealt to the Yankees for some of their bullpen depth.

by clark on Oct 22, 2008 11:08 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

from the Yanks

I would love to get David Robertson before he establishes himself in their bullpen. He put up sick minor league numbers but he is buried on their depth chart, so he might be available. I would ask for him and a live minor league arm who is not 40 eligible for a couple of years, and I would be very happy with that sort of package.

by clark on Oct 22, 2008 1:07 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

If we really want to part ways with him

We may indeed have to sell a little low on him, but I’m totally fine with that. Just as long as he’s not around to screw up JD’s deligation of playing time among the three young catchers, I will be completely happy.

that they are willing to keep all of their arb eligible players. Again, this could be external posturing, but I take that to mean a trade of similar arb players, like, say, Laird for Scott Olsen (who I know brings mixed opinions around here) could be plausible.

Those who would sacrifice liberty for safety deserve neither.

by Brian Thomas on Oct 22, 2008 7:27 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Not to be a pessimist, but...

Hanigan had 10 AB’s in ‘07 and 85 AB’s in ‘08. We all know how much Dusty loves playing rookies. If Hanigan is indeed the catcher of the future, then Laird could provide a short-term transition until Hanigan is “ready” in Dusty’s eyes. Then again, Votto got a significant amount of playing time, as well as Cueto and Volquez. The fact that Bruce only got around 100 AB’s is baffling. I really have no idea what is going in Cincy, but I would not be surprised if they found somebody else instead of Hanigan.
