Today's Jake Peavy post

From Buster Olney today:

Many rival executives expect the Padres to deal Jake Peavy to Atlanta for something very close to this package of players: center field prospect Jordan Schaefer, pitching prospect Tommy Hanson and second baseman Kelly Johnson.

Hmmm...the Ranger equivalent would be something like Elvis Andrus, Neftali Feliz, and David Murphy, maybe?

Andrus/Feliz/Salty probably trumps the Atlanta package discussed above.

Although I still think Peavy ends up in Atlanta.

Thank God

I was going into Jake Peavy withdrawal.

He’s so dreamy.

Has Newberg upped the offer for him recently? Maybe throwing in Max and Erica to get it done?

Well then,

would you throw Seth and Melissa Lima’s dress in if it would seal the deal?

The Lima dress?

Sure. Not Seth, though. Seth is awesome. Even if he thinks that, after peeing in the potty, he needs to splash around in the toilet some.

Seth

He’s under control for longer than either Peavy or Greinke, though some question his seriousness.

It's funny...

how the young mirror the elderly. When you’re young, you find out you can get some cookies off the shelf with a bat. When you’re old, you realize you’ll need to use your cane to press the life alert button after you’ve fallen off the crapper.

That makes me wonder

When my daughter was first learning to use the “big potty” we got a little step stool for her to step up on….I wonder if Ben uses one of those too?

Here's what's weird

No one really potty trained him.

I tried to, some, to no avail.

Then he went to preschool (the 2 year old class), and on the first day of class, saw some other little kids using the potty.

The teacher told my wife, when she picked him up, that he was very interested in them doing that.

The next day, at potty time, he apparently went on in there and did it himself.

Peer pressure is a remarkable thing.

Peavy

I say let him go to the Braves. First, Gammons brought up a really good point, over the last two seasons he has recorded 15 outs beyond the 6th inning. This is not a good sign for holding up in Texas. Second, if you think about the big pitching deals of the past few years, Bedard, Haren, Mulder, Hudson et al. then even when the other pitcher did well, as in the case with Haren, he was probably not better than the combined package that was shipped away. We could get Peavy but would probably be better off in the long run with Andrus and Feliz (not sure about Saltalamacchia). It would be exciting to get him, but I say let him go.

Callis

Weighed in on this in his espn chat today:

jsm (dallas): Buster said in his blog today that many rival execs “expect the Padres will deal Jake Peavy to Atlanta for something very close to this package of players: center field prospect Jordan Schaefer, pitching prospect Tommy Hanson and second baseman Kelly Johnson.” Could the Rangers best that offer with: Feliz or Holland, plus Andrus or Beltre, plus Laird or Saltalamacchia?

Jim Callis: That’s a comparable deal. The Padres really need a CF, so Schafer might be more attractive to them than Laird or Salty. Teagarden would be the C I’d want from the Rangers.

by jsm on Oct 22, 2008 4:21 PM CDT up reply actions

Callis also said he’d rather have Cain than Peavy. I wholeheartedly agree. Don’t know if Cain would be any cheaper though.

by jsm on Oct 22, 2008 4:25 PM CDT up reply actions

Peavy's arm could fall of at any moment.

If he comes here replace “could” with “will” and “any moment” with “on the walk to his car after the press conference where he officially signed his 3yr/75mm extension”.

Peavy

First, Gammons brought up a really good point, over the last two seasons he has recorded 15 outs beyond the 6th inning.

That is wildly inaccurate. By my count, Peavy has 41 IP over the past two seasons after the 6th.

Yeah

Even if the Rangers put together the best package (with their farm, they easily could), who says Peavy waives his no-trade to go to the Rangers, especially with the knowledge that he’d rather stay in the NL and that pitchers generally require a premium to pitch half their games at hitters’ parks.

Free Agent vs. Trade

I’d much rather sign Sabathia or Sheets… or Lowe for that matter, than trade for Peavy (or pretty much anyone else). We need to save our trade chips for when we actually have a chance to contend… say 2010? I mean really, does Peavy make us into a contender in 2009? We would still need Millwood and Padilla to combine for 30 wins and two of the young kids to win 10 each. And I have no faith in pitchers who haven’t pitched in the A.L.

Smells like Chan Ho Park, release 2.

I really hope he's dealt soon

so I can quit holding my breath on Andrus, CD, Feliz, Main and Holland. Let Atlanta have him

At this rate, he’ll be throwing 107-110 by 2012

BEN SHEETS!!!!!!!

please. I want a rotation like this:
Sheets
Millwood
Buchholz
McCarthy
Harrison

That is a World Series rotation my friends.

it's

a low risk/high reward rotation since we have many backup starters in this scenario, I consider this rotation the best use of our assets..

Since you could probably only get about 7 starts from a combination of Sheets, Millwood, and McCarthy.

From the shotgun seat

of the Peavy bandwagon, I say let the Braves have him.

That proposed Atlanta offer is beyond what I would pay. I’m willing to give SD one premium prospect (Feliz, Holland, Davis), or two near-premium prospects (Andrus, Salty, MaxRam, Tea, Beltre, Beavan, Main). And in the first case, I want a reliever back as well.

I still think that SD may prefer several B/B+ players as opposed to one A player and a bunch of lesser guys. But I say NO to an Andrus/Feliz deal or anything equivalent.

Van Damn

Why do people keep suggesting that we should throw Feliz or Holland in a deal for the oh so elusive ace? Or even a lower tier guy like Hurley?

At best, that’s 2 steps forward, 1 back. I get that not including a B to B+ pitcher might be a deal breaker. But we have positional B+ guys. We have lower level B+ pitchers. And our core ML position players need all the pitching help SOON. Not in 4 years when Perez and Main and Ross and co. are kicking in the door. Trade one of those guys if it has to be pitching (but don’t trade Main).

I just really think we need to put a temporary moratorium on trading AA or higher level pitchers unless we are blown away, considering the ages of our core positional talent. We need to see the Kikers, Harrisons, Hunters, and their ilk sort themselves out.

Those who would sacrifice liberty for safety deserve neither.

by Brian Thomas on Oct 22, 2008 5:38 PM CDT reply actions

Preach on.

We all blast Hicksy for not being able to stick with a rebuilding plan and then as soon as a injury-risk ace hits the trade market everyone breaks out the old “damn the farm I wanna win NOW!” routine.

Patience, ya bunch of rowdy mother lovers.

He just got off the phone on the Ticket, too

Kind of awkward when they asked him from his book what his favorite baseball moment was and he was like, “Uh, I have no idea what you are talking about.” Then they tried to prompt him, and he still had no idea (this is his book!), then way later he was like, “Oh, I remember now! I like throwing guys out the best!”
